#Takeover I have just finished a 3 day takeover of the USW Newport BA (Hons.) Documentary Photography Instagram account. I shared 9 snapshots from my 6 year project "ESSE", which will be culminating in an installation show this summer. The series takes inspiration from the philosophy of "being", the purest form of existence and a fundamental idea within our understanding of life.

Before iPhoneography.

“iPhoneography” has yet to be coined, Instagram is launching on the newly opened App Store in 4 months time and I have just booted up my new iPhone 3GS for the first time.

 The silver Apple logo, the unevenly backlit display and the “fingerprint resistant” glass that resembled a bus window within 30 seconds of use.

 The iPhone 3GS was my first camera and to call it a “camera” was a stretch of the imagination, even for me. 
Even considering the time and the, then unthinkable, idea of using a phone as a camera, a 3.15 megapixel camera was laughable. 
 Apple’s software allowed for no more than a single button to shoot and an autofocus system that found no difference between a face and a toaster. 
 It did, on the other hand, allow for a digital animation of the “aperture shutter” closing, to play while the image saved. 
This animation did nothing more than attempt to trick the user into believing that the iPhone was doing more than saving an image, for the 3 seconds that it was unusable, each time they took a photo. 

Despite all this, I would still argue that the iPhone 3GS is the best camera that I have ever owned. It allowed me to just take photos, with no forethought. If it wasn't for that pixelated mess of a camera, I probably would have a completely different appreciation for photography.
 Let’s just not mention all of the photos on Instagram that now appear to have been taken with a potato.
