Sewing Adventures - Morning Glory Top
I spotted this top on my Instagram feed after going down one of the many sewing rabbit holes. I had recently put myself on a “pattern diet”. Between the acquisition of my grandmothers patterns, getting overly excited about pattern sales ( not knowing they occur at regular intervals), and being overly ambitious about making ALL the things- I decided it was time to start actually MAKING some things. So- no new patterns until I’ve used a few………buuuuuuut then this came along. And, like dresses, I know there will always be more. BUT THAT’S NOT THE POINT.
This pattern was created by Sarah Kisten. And even better, the pattern was free! YES PLEASE.
I loved the simplicity of this top. It was pretty easy to make- and I was able to finish within 2 days, which was a record for me! The pattern wasn’t a “pattern” per se, but instructions based on your measurements and a little geometry. This top can also be styled both front and back, whichever is your mood. I can totally see this for beach days, it was a casual, relaxed fit. And the knot tie in the back- so cute!
Honestly, the “hardest” part was learning the french seams, which weren’t that hard, but more like, “spending the time to understand and learn a new technique and feel like you’re doing it wrong the whole time until the very end and then you’re like oh I see” . So, after some time on the struggle bus, everything clicked into place.
The directions were easy follow, and this pattern is very beginner friendly. I probably should have made this first when I decided to start sewing garments.
The fabric I used was lightweight linen fabric. I am not sure if it could be considered chambray, but that was the look I was going for. I picked up the fabric at Scrap Denton- which is a super cool arts and crafts thrift store in Denton, TX. SCRAP is a “Retail shop of an art-focused non-profit selling used craft, sewing, school & office supplies.” They were having this amazing sale of buying fabric BY THE POUND. I died and went to fabric heaven!!!

Summary: this pattern is easy to follow, and relatively fast, and yes please- I’ll take one in every color.
