For those who use binding tape (like Trans Tape or KT Tape): taking it off should not hurt! If it hurts to take off your tape, you are likely doing it:

too fast

without enough lube

both

Try getting the tape soaked with water (a lot of people take it off in the shower/bath), and then soak it with an oil, and then slowly peel it off. If it hurts and leaves behind red marks, it is because you are tearing a layer of skin off (and you should let it heal before you put more on). Binding tape doesn't carry the same risks to your ribs/lungs but you still need to take care of your skin!

First of all, take everything I’m about to say with a grain of salt. I had a bad experience using tape and eventually chose to stop binding altogether rather than use it. However, I know some people have really good experiences with it, so here’s my advice.

As someone who used to bind with Trans Tape and ALWAYS ended up with red marks after - slowly is slower than you think. I recently helped a friend take off tape and we did it slowly enough they didn’t have any red marks or pain after. I didn’t time it, but I would estimate it took 20-30 minutes to take off their tape with both of us working together (one piece per side). If you are bigger chested and use more pieces, it may take longer. I had G cups pre-op and it took me 4 pieces of tape per side.

In my experience, you should pull the tape perpendicular to your skin. You should NOT pull the end of the tape that you have lifted towards the end that is still attached. Here is a drawing of what I mean because this is hard to describe

If you have 1 or more people who you are comfortable with helping you, I extremely recommend you ask them to. Be patient. Find somewhere comfortable to sit. It will come off eventually.

If you take off your tape too fast it can be really painful. Aloe vera and lotion help a little bit but a wash cloth soaked in cold water is better for immediate relief.
