Lovely example of an Epiphone Sheraton that was in last week suffering with some playability issues. Slightly lifting upper frets (coupled with a bad setup), were contributing to horrible buzzing and rattling, even with the action quite high. A reseat and minor dress, really allowed me to dial in the customers desired setup. There was also some unsightly buckle rash on the back... put there by the previous owner, which I bugged out. Some of my favourite jobs are ones where I get to improve entry level or inexpensive instruments and make them as good as they can be. This Vintage LP Style Lemon Drop was on the bench this week for such work. One thing that can be greatly improved on guitars such as these are the frets. They’re only pressed or hammered in in the factory, then they’re shipped halfway across the word where they often travel through lots of different climates. This can cause wood to swell and/or contract and cause frets to lift. Which was the case with this guitar. On first inspection, the frets were all over the place, so each one was re-seated and glued in place. Then fully levelled and dressed, which greatly improved the playability and tone of the guitar, and allowed me to dial in the customers desired action. It’s also had a bone nut crafted and installed, and a new 50’s wiring control harness installed, comprised of US CTS Pots, orange drop caps and a Switchcraft Switch and output socket. The DiMarzio was already in the neck position, but I replaced the bridge pickup with a Tonerider AC2. The result is a guitar that is dramatically different than the one that first went on the bench, in tone, feel, and playability. Sorry for the lack of posts, but it’s been crazy busy in the workshop of late. I had to share this 2001 Suhr Custom STD with you though. It was in for a full setup and service and to have a set of EM85/SA/SA fitted. Happy to say that there was only just enough room inside the control cavity for everything, including the battery.... I really didn’t want to have to carve into this gorgeous guitar. #firebirdthursday ... not even a thing, but I just wanted to share this awesome ‘05 Gibson Firebird with you. It had multiple issues due to being treated a bit roughly by a previous owner, but it’s had the full works. This has had a headstock repair, but the break was so clean, it came together really well, and required only a slight finish repair afterwards. It’s also had some electronics issues repaired, hardware and electronic components serviced, the nitro finish restored to its former glossy shine, a full fingerboard treatment, a full fret polish and a full setup for Ernie Ball Regular Slinky’s. An Ibanez Jem Junior, ready time shred after a full Setup and some tweaks. These are fantastic guitars, but need a bit of work to squeeze the best out of them. It’s had a full breakdown and re-assemble to make sure every component is performing as it should, a full fret polish so the strings glide over the frets, a replacement perloid pickguard fitted, the last 4 frets scalloped just like the higher end Jems, and a full setup for Ernie Ball Super Slinky’s. The fingerboard was also incredible dry, so it’s had a feed and an oil.
