Upon reflection, the tendency of Dracula adaptations to treat Jonathan as a bit character is probably inextricable from their tendency to treat the episodes concerning his time in Castle Dracula as a fairly tedious piece of exposition to a story which truly begins with Dracula's arrival in London.

I know this is blasphemy, but I feel like Dracula is the one novel that might actually benefit from being split into multiple films. Do an intimate bottle-episode psychological horror piece covering Jonathan's confinement to and eventual escape from Dracula's castle, so in the next movie we actually have proper context for his whole... everything.

One of the things that I like about Occtis is that he's very literal in his word choice. He knows relying on connotation and implication isn't his friend, and that his name changes the way he'll be interpreted, and that's clearly not just since his family killed the Davinos, because he understood Murray didn't like him and why thoroughly enough to not take it personally, so he tries to be very precise, to vary degrees of success.

And I say that here because as bickery as they are here, it's clear that Julien hears it a bit as an insult anyway, at least at first. He responds snidely because it comes across like Occtis is looking down on him in a similar disinterested way that Occtis's dad spoke about having no ill will for Julien's family but that their houses would fall. But Occtis isn't saying it as an insult, it's not weird because Occtis thinks that people shouldn't like Julien, it's weird to Occtis to see someone not belong in one place but very much belong in another.

Thaisha belongs everywhere she walks. Vaelus doesn't seem to belong anywhere, not even in her sisterhood anymore. But Julien, who is the one who refuses to put an effort into the group dynamic, has this place where he belongs, and it's not with Aranessa and the Royce and Davinos, and it's not with the druids, and it's not with nobility or humans as a whole, it's with the people who just wanted to make a difference and didn't have what it took to just belong in a pre-existing group. Julien belongs with this group that is 95% commoners and a mishmash of species and religions, and he doesn't have to be apologetic about who he is to belong here, and more than that, Julien can be among other people and be standoffish and rude, and he can come home to this place where they like him for everything that their current companions are "putting up with".

And it's weird because Sir Julien Davinos, Hero of the Sundered Houses in the Falconers Rebellion, belongs in this place for people that weren't born lucky enough to have a disposition that lent itself to something older, and Julien, Hero of Maharlian Falls and one who brought Thjazi Fang to heel, belongs among these people who needed to make their own way to heed "the call" as Brennan called it. This would seem to be the least likely place for Sir Julien Davinos to be most well loved, and Occtis wants to belong somewhere too. So how do you ask why he belongs here without first saying it's not an insult?

In Mina's first entry in may she mentions how her journal is going to be an actual journal, to practice her writing + documenting skills in order to develop more secretarial skills, and today's entry really shows how much Mina has evolved in that manner.

If one reads her entry in the context of being a newspaper tourist report about Whitby; without all of Mina's personal little quirks and the introduction of Mr. Swales, it paints an interesting picture of the town which involves all of the relevant points that people can visit. It's a subtle, yet really cool way to see the "passage of time" outside of the textual entries.
