The Literati scene at Truncheon is bittersweet for many reasons, but it really brings their car scene from S2 full circle.
Rory's boyfriend is out of town and would hate knowing she's with Jess tonight, but here they are, talking about who they are and who they're becoming. The first time, they're full of curiosity about each other's dreams, encouraging with kindness and sharpness all at once. Four years later, their lives have taken them through all sorts of twists and turns, and they're both doing something they love, a bit bashful about their own accomplishments while so happy for each other.
Luke doesn't understand Jess's workplace per his own words, but he expresses sincere pride anyway, something he didn't do with any of Jess's previous jobs and something Jess obviously finds meaningful. Rory does understand. She feels inspired here! She knows his writing is all his own. Jess knows Rory can win over people with different personalities, guide them to collaborate, and meticulously edit to tell cohesive stories, and more than that, he can tell she's thriving and loves it.
Jess offers the choice to let the moment go on and on, and Rory accepts. ("Turn right.") Then comes the crash; the kiss shatters just as Jess reaches for the same arm Rory broke. In the aftermath, Rory is upset over Jess being treated unfairly, even by her, and Jess's final act is also an echo. ("I made sure she was okay.")
