I hear the sound of a glass bottle gliding smoothly across a frozen lake. I say, "No, it can't be...". I look behind me. What i see is downright Aykroydian.
I don't disagree with the observation that a lot of folks in tabletop roleplaying spaces don't believe that game design is real (i.e., in the sense that they believe any GM should be able to achieve any experience of play using any system, and refuse to recognise that rules are opinionated about what sort of games they want to produce), but I feel like putting that at the forefront is confusing the symptom for the disease. A lot of folks in tabletop roleplaying spaces don't believe game design is real because they don't believe that games are real.
I've talked in the past about how Hasbro's efforts to deceptively market Dungeons & Dragons as universal entry-level game have fostered a culture of play in which any appearance that D&D isn't a universal entry-level game is regarded as evidence that you have a "bad GM", and how, in order to avoid being a "bad GM", it's necessary to treat it as a normal part of the GM's responsibilities to constantly monitor the outputs of the rules and quickly paper over any gaps between the game the rules want to produce and the game the group wants to play, like a cartoon train conductor frantically constructing the very tracks along which the train they're conducting is riding.
The trouble is that most players aren't stupid, and readily see through the act. They (correctly!) observe that the particulars of the rules don't actually seem to matter all that much, because most of the desired experience of play is the product of the GM's constant interventions, rather than the product of interpreting the outputs of the rules – but instead of identifying this as a problem, they conclude (again, quite reasonably, as they've probably never seen it done differently) that this is what tabletop roleplaying is. The GM merely pretends to be moderating a game; in truth, they're a pantomime-leader whose job is to maintain the illusion that we're playing a game with rules, when in fact what we're really doing is guided improv theatre.
And of course there's nothing wrong with guided improv theatre – it's a fine pastime, and one I've enjoyed myself on many occasions. However, it does put folks who really do want to play a game in a bind, because now there's this insurmountable communication barrier. You can say "I want to play a game, and these are the rules of that game", and receive what seems to be enthusiastic agreement with that premise; however, a significant portion of the people expressing that agreement think they're participating in a bit of kayfabe, like very dedicated professional wrestlers who stay in character even outside the ring.
Critically, nobody is necessarily acting in bad faith in this equation. The folks who don't bother to learn the rules because they think games aren't real mostly aren't fucking with you on purpose; they honestly thought they were yes-anding your improv prompt by pretending to care about the mechanics of play, and when they discover that you really do expect them to do all that fiddly dice math, from their perspective it genuinely looks like you were the one misleading them. It's just a fucked up culture of play garbling all the signals in both directions.
(Note that, while I've identified Hasbro's deceptive marketing as the ultimate source of this culture of play, indie RPGs are hardly innocent of perpetuating it. You only need cast a critical eye on the "Rule Zero" sections of many popular indie games to notice that their authors are all in on the idea that games aren't real!)

Yeah, big name "actual play" podcasts that pretend they're not scripted and workshopped to hell are a big contributing factor, though I wouldn't classify them as distinct from Hasbro's marketing apparatus so much as one of the most visible arms of that apparatus. The fact that Hasbro isn't paying them directly doesn't mean they aren't serving the brand.
(The weird part is that I get the impression that some of them don't even know it. Sometimes it seems like Brennan Lee Mulligan genuinely doesn't realise that best practices for running a game of Dungeons & Dragons as a kind of performance art for a paying audience are very different from best practices for running a game of Dungeons & Dragons for your three buddies in the GM's dining room.)

Maaaaaan. So I'm DMing two DnD 5e games at the moment. One of them is a high level combat focused megadungeon with very experienced players, while the other is more open and has more RP with a mix of experienced and new players. I always feel way more drained after a session running the latter game than the former. And I think you really helped me see why. I'm DEFINITELY having to do a ton of track-laying while running that game, because it's such an unfocused game. I feel way more like I have to be an entertainer who's always the one responsible for my players' fun, rather than expecting them to make their own fun using the rules of the game, like the players in my other group do.
Quite so – that's the central paradox of the rules-heavy-versus-rules-light debate: provided that the game the rules want to produce agrees with the game the group wants to play, a rules-heavy game may actually be less demanding to run than a rules-light one. A rigorous framework of play can be a very effective means of distributing the workload of making the game happen; if you play your cards right, the players won't even notice they're taking a load off the GM's shoulders by making their own rulings, because to them it just feels like drawing the obvious conclusions.

Kinda sick and tired of people treating racism like it’s no big deal, and specifically especially sick and tired of people blindly crying “transmisogynistic harassment” whenever someone criticizes their favorite white trans woman for her racism.
More people are talking about TADC’s leaks in sympathy for Gooseworx than they are about her being silent on how she participated in racist jokes other than implying it was not “genuine” racism. Nobody seems to bring up Patricia “I am also limited in my ability to racially oppress due to being trans and disabled” Taxxon’s consistent racism, despite her becoming relevant again due to the latest incident with Hbomberguy. A lot of popular transfem bloggers on Tumblr have a history of racism too, but God forbid you bring it up.
I feel fucking crazy. What happened to “you are white before you are anything else”? So many popular trans women on here are specifically white trans women who you’re not allowed to point out have said racist shit that they still stand by, or you’re the bad person. You’re overreacting. You’re harassing a poor innocent white woman over nothing that actually matters, and you need to touch grass and learn what a real problem is. These women are allowed to wield their white woman tears by crying about how oppressed they are and how hard their lives are and how everybody is out to get them when criticized for racism, and people just BUY IT?? Not just buy it, but ENFORCE IT, harass others who DON’T buy it, accuse the ones who don’t buy it of, and I quote, LYNCHING her.
White trans women are not less likely to be racist than any other type of white person, but they’re treated like they are, and the notion they could be racist is treated as inherently ridiculous, defamatory, and transmisogynistic.
I think that some people need to come to grips with the fact that some of these women are blatantly, openly racist, and hide behind their disabilities/mental illnesses and their transness. We cannot be positioning white trans women as an authority on all systems of oppression, because white trans women are not the modern martyr for the oppressed voice. Black trans women have felt everything they have, 100 times worse. White trans women’s suffering is real, but suffering as a white woman is just so much different. And if we want the trans community to be safe for POC, we need to start actually calling racism from trans people out, instead of being the girl who cried transmisogynistic harassment campaign.
But this is the website that says a term coined by a Black trans woman to call out racism from white members of the transfem community is inherently transmisogynistic (even a transmisogynistic slur) and should never be used. So maybe I’m just talking to a (very racist) brick wall here.

My take is this.
We as a progressive society have gone past the point where we can accept some humor as subjective, and still know it as unserious and in good faith, and moral absolutism has ruined how people can engage in humor around people who claim to be progressive.
But ALSO, gooseworx is a piece of shit regardless of whether she’s racist or not, so this doesn’t really phase me.
Looking at the clips people reference paints a clear picture to me. Someone’s username used the prefix “nega,” short for negative, and the VAs saw that as funny and possibly racist, so their initial jokes were making fun of that person’s potentially racist username.
Then, goose referred to her good buddy vivzie’s oc with black skin/fur as “nega-angel,” referencing the earlier joke and making a race joke.
That’s not a particularly racist statement, it doesn’t attack black identity and isn’t stating a slur, however it is close to the latter.
When this first broke out, I saw dozens of black folks saying they didn’t give a shit, and that it was 7 years ago and not even offensive at that.
Once the finale leaked and it was dogshit, and once people realized goose was friends with Vivienne “I am an evil pedophile rapist” medrano, they changed their minds about the controversy out of nowhere.
I think this is mainly piggybacking off of the fact that gooseworx is a hack, not really being worried about serious racism.
I mean, let’s be real. Looking at the audience for something like the huniecast and the target audience of TADC and hazbin, who’s gonna be radicalized or turned racist by a joke like that? And further so, why wouldn’t they be by the actual race stereotypes in hazbin itself instead?
Goose has said before she believes this kind of humor is best kept private, and I believe that, but she made the clear mistake of putting it out there publicly.

The VAs played into this, by saying things like, “Sure, nega.” The joke is that it sounds like they’re saying the n-slur, and they do it over and over and over again. I don’t understand how that is difficult to grasp as racist — they’re making light of a horrible, racist slur that none of them can reclaim.
3. The VA themself said the joke was, in fact, racist.
4. “Dozens of Black folks” do not speak for every Black person. Every Black person I’ve seen was angered by this on some level, including when this controversy just dropped. “I can’t be racist because I have Black friends who agree with me”-type response.

Sit down and either support Black people when a “controversy” around anti-Blackness comes up, or shut the fuck up. Like, this might be a revolutionary concept to you, so sit down, but you actually don’t need to share every single solitary opinion, or “hot take”, you have. Even if you disagree with a current “controversy” or a popular post. You can talk to people who agree with you in DMs, including those Black people who think this is a nothingburger that you mentioned. You don’t need to go out of your way to try and “correct” the people who are validly upset by this joke. (A joke that the VA admitted was racist, that she admitted was specifically on the subject of race and the n-slur.)
