UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.
SERVICE DOG PSA
So today I tripped. Fell flat on my face, it was awful but ultimately harmless. My service dog, however, is trained to go get an adult if I have a seizure, and he assumed this was a seizure (were training him to do more to care for me, but we didn’t learn I had epilepsy until a year after we got him)
I went after him after I had dusten off my jeans and my ego, and I found him trying to get the attention of a very annoyed woman. She was swatting him away and telling him to go away. So I feel like I need to make this heads up
If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help
Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, follow the dog! If it had been an emergency situation, I could have vomited and choked, I could have hit my head, I could have had so many things happen to me. We’re going to update his training so if the first person doesn’t cooperate, he moves on, but seriously guys. If what’s-his-face could understand that lassie wanted him to go to the well, you can figure out that a dog in a vest proclaiming it a service dog wants you to follow him
[Image: Post by Jim Campbell ( @/JustJimWillDo ); transcript follows.]
I honestly didn’t know that I was supposed to follow a service dog in a vest if it approached me by itself.
I do now.
So do you.
The world is a slightly better place. Well done us.
“Do it scared” “do it alone” are all great tips, but my biggest takeaway from therapy is do it messy. This is especially true if you’re getting out of a burnout, which I experience often. Literally just do it messy. You don’t need to pick the perfect trail to walk, the perfect playlist to listen to, whatever the fuck it is. You don’t need to have a meticulous to do list and wake up at the exact time you planned and drink the exact amount of water you planned to drink. Like the biggest thing for people like me to remember is sometimes it’s okay to do it messy. Put on a random yt workout and just get it done in sweats. Do 5 minutes of a daunting task and go from there. Sometimes just getting up is a win during intense burnouts or depressive funks. Literally just do it messy.
i haaaate being avoidant. it makes you feel like the world's biggest jackass whenever someone tries to talk to you or whatever and you just Freeze Up
Oh sorry i took a long ass time to reply and didnt say anything. I got arbitrarily scared and tired myself out so now i cant say much. Oopsie teehee. it makes you feel like a huge dickhead
I know this is meant to be funny but it actually makes such a good point about how ADHD and executive dysfunction can impact people in really major ways, including financially
1) any stretching is better than no stretching
2) any vegetable is better than no vegetable
3) statistically you will never be the worst person at anything, there is always someone in the world who is worse at stuff than you are
[I.D.: A five panel black and white digital comic with a supplicant and a sage. The supplicant on their knees says "Oh, all-knowing sage, grant me your wisdom!" The sage, floating ominously says "Stop taking twelve Advil a day"
"Boo!" replies the supplicant. Then the sage takes out a box of Advil and a ox of Tylenol and hands them to the supplicant. "Instead, alternate between Advil and Tylenol. They work through different mechanisms, so they are safe to take together."
"Oh!" says the supplicant, now smiling. The sage holds up a finger, saying "Never go over the recommended daily maximum for any OTC drugs. Overuse of Advil can cause stomach and liver issues; overuse of Tylenol can damage your kidneys. Always speak to a physician before combining prescription strength drugs." End I.D.]
you have the kidney/liver backwards. advil and other nsaids cause kidney damage and tylenol causes liver damage
[ID: a two panel black and white comic. The sage dramatically says "the all-knowing sage does not make mistakes!" but then points to a hastily scribbled, sobbing artist and says "but the idiot drawing them does." The artist says "sorry!!!" while hunched over their desk. End ID]
The all-knowing sage is restricted by their medium and the artist is very very srry!!!!!!!!
PLEASE REBLOG THIS VERSION AND THANK YOU SAILOR-LAPIS-LAZULI
Happy autistic pride day! 🎉🎉
It's the 2nd of may as I'm writing this, and just in case anyone needs to hear this:
Brushing your teeth 3-4 times a year is still better than nothing. If you promised yourself that you'd do better this year and already fell off the wagon in january, go do it now, even if you can't manage it every day.
Once a week is better than never. Once a month is better than never. Hell, once a year is better than never. If you can't do perfect, better than nothing is better than nothing. Go brush your teeth.
Reblogging to add the thing that changed my life: brushing with just water is better than not brushing at all.
Again, you don't have to brush with toothpaste. Not every time, and not at all if it genuinely proves a barrier.
Yeah, it's better for your teeth and gums and breath to use some kind of toothpaste product, but if that's what's stopping you? Don't! Just don't.
You have my permission and that of my dentist: just a wet freaking toothbrush run a handful of times over your teeth quickly to get the scuzz off is infinitely better than not brushing at all.
It counts. It helps. It's okay. If it's what you can manage, or what you can stand at the end of an overstimulating day, it's amazing.
unfortunately very true. Doing Better does not always mean never being upset or never being triggered or never having trouble. often Doing Better means experiencing those things and being able to keep going/cope healthily/move on. if you’re in a bubble with no sensation, if you’re numbing yourself out, that’s not what recovering really is. it won’t help you have a happier life it’ll just make your world smaller and smaller until you can’t fit anywhere anymore. gotta learn to make peace with the hard stuff too, that’s the only way to keep going
what do you mean my disability disables my abilities? what the fuck
It makes me happy when they listen
YES. YES YES YES THANK YOU
they really don't respect the time of disabled people. your application can take up to 12 weeks. the specialist waitlist is 3 years. your assessment will be any time within the next 6 months. let us know if you cannot attend this appointment you waited 7 weeks for and we'll reschedule next year. we've decided to assess you at this time and day and you have to be available or any support you dared to apply for is not going to happen. and in between these long bouts of waiting you have to survive the everyday
You know, there's this cliché that teenage boys always eat massive amounts, but teenage girls really aren't that different if they're not suppressed by diet culture and body shaming. Like, I was a teenage girl who frankly just stopped bothering to fit into mainstream beauty ideals at some point, and I would regularly make myself just one big massive pot of pasta and devour it completely. This wasn't even stress eating or anything, I just genuinely needed the energy because you know, I was a teenager and my body was developing. I feel like so many teenage girls think they need to eat as little as possible to be petite and pretty, but the truth is that your body is developing just as intensely as teenage boys' bodies. Eat more, please, your body needs it.
Same! Growing up, I ate way more than most people in my family, so everyone commented on it. It’s one reason why I have a hard time eating in front of people. Yet nobody said anything when my teenage brother ate as much as me
just because someone can articulate their point better doesn’t make them right, it makes them articulated.
and you aren’t stupid for having trouble articulating yourself.
Hey. Heyhey. Do me a favor real quick.
If you don't already know you have issues doing so, squat down real quick. Bend your knees all the way and touch the floor. Just make sure you can do it. Okay? For me? And then stand up all the way and make sure you can balance on one foot.
Like. You don't need to blow it into some huge thing. Just. Make sure all your bits and peices still work the way you think they do.
Can you turn your head to look behind you without twisting your shoulders? What about standing on your toes? If you sit down on the floor can you get back up without using your hands?
If there was ever a tumblr post worth sending to your mom, it's this one.
Just saying, bodies are a use it or lose it kinda thing.
okay so every time I see this post crop back up in queues and notifications I end up thinking about it. Because I made the post and even I'm still doing the thing where I read the post about maintaining range of motion in my delicate meatsuit and I nod and hmm and think yeah that's a good idea and then dont move from where I'm curled up shrimp style staring at the nightmare rectangle.
So like. Thinking real hard about moving doesn't count as moving. Major bummer. Anyways. Joints.
