Also as I was rereading it I noticed he said he was afraid of spending all his parents money on a firebolt - since it was hundreds of galleons. The premise being that the money was for school and necessities alone - if he didn’t have a great concept of math (which I’m sure he did not because most of us at 12 do not have a sense of how much things actually cost labor, work etc.) it would be sound to say that he just wanted to live at a bare minimum - like how the Dursleys had always treated him and how he watched the Weasleys live. Anything above the bare minimum was always either a gift or necessary.
