‘You can’t?’ Seth asks, keeping an eye on Iris even as it looks as if he’s looking ahead. If she only had contact with the human side of her family, as she said she did, her not knowing made sense.
That lack of knowledge of herself still bothers him, the familiarity of it keeping his expression and thoughts carefully schooled to avoid questions he didn’t want to answer. When he turns to face Iris again, he can’t quite keep his thoughts of the situation fully hidden however.
With how different all of them were, her explanation doesn’t narrow things down much, though he didn’t expect it to. 'And the humans who raised you didn’t-’ Seth’s hands freeze there, old anger halting the words.
“Human, singular.” She smiles a little. “It’s always just been me and Aunt Ellen. And no, she didn’t know anything, either. I mean, she figured I might be different. My, you know,” she gestured with her horn a little, “this didn’t show up until later like I said, but the magic stuff’s been happening since I was little, on and off. She did her best to keep me safe and help me figure it out, but still, we were kind of on our own. You’re the first person I’ve ever met who knows anything about this stuff.“
She brightens suddenly. “Oh! You should come over for dinner! Aunt Ellen would love to meet you! She’s got as many questions as I do! And then you wouldn’t have to answer the same ones twice.” She chuckles.
singinghands:
Even before she finishes speaking, Seth is shaking his head. ‘I wouldn’t know if one was. But you don’t feel like they would.’ Or so he assumed; what he was able to read didn’t feel much different from Dee.
At that thought, worry and nostalgia flicker through his expression shortly before Seth forces his mind back to the current subject. When he was alone, he could fret.
Desperate wasn’t the word he would have chosen, though Iris didn’t need to know that. 'So you have no memory of them, then?’
Iris tilts her head, processing this. She doesn’t feel like it. “You mean you can sorta... sense if somebody is, or not?” Oh, wait. “Like the feeling I get from you? That kind of...”
She gestures vaguely at him, not having the words to explain what his aura is or what it feels like.
“...I guess that makes sense. I’ve gotten kind of similar vibes from people, before, I just never knew what it meant...”
She focuses on the question, shaking her head. “No. I was a very small baby, maybe only a few weeks old.” He frowns a little to herself, thinking. “...Though, I guess I always... Had this odd sense of... Light. Like a flashlight, but... behind my eyes? I guess?”

She hadn’t known from birth? That catches his attention, gets him staring for several seconds in his surprise; most of Seth’s experience, what he had heard, contradicted that. The influence should have been obvious from the start.
The singular horn, regardless of color, is at least more what he considered normal. For that reason it gets a brief glance before Seth returns to not acknowledging it.
Whatever information she found was likely to be incorrect, but Iris would learn that in her own time. ‘Whoever left you there was-’
His hands still before signing irresponsible, not certain of how she would react. No matter how much he felt that the truth. Leaving someone in her position alone to fend for herself with a human to guard her, her missing parent should have known better.
Iris, unsure of what he was going to say exactly, shrugs a little. “...Probably pretty desperate. I guess I can’t blame them. If one of my parents really was some kind of... You know... Demon or something...”
Iris always wondered about them, always pined to know them, always felt just a tiny bit of anger at them... But after realizing what she was, well, she’d forced her curiosity and resentment down in favor of giving them the benefit of the doubt.
At least this might finally be the end of some that wondering, if Seth can help.
singinghands:
@theheartofephedia (from here):
Iris doesn’t look convinced. “It looks bad enough,” she says quietly. “It must have hurt so much…”
It had, when it had happened, but that was long enough ago that Seth didn’t remember it clearly. The sympathy on the unfamiliar girl’s face puts him on edge, the brighter other than human feel of her more so.
But he was practiced at hiding both reactions, thankfully. ‘I suppose, but not currently.’ At least, if he kept pressure off of the old scar, some of it stubbornly tender and never the same patch consistently enough to guess. That annoyance too he was accustomed to hiding, and thankfully he was able to tug his sleeve back down to cover it more fully.
There was one important question, however, one more pressing than how Iris had been able to get close enough to see said old scar in his distraction. 'Whose are you?’ He didn’t recognize who she felt like; even as small as their community was, it was possible he hadn’t met her parent with how spread out they usually were.
Somewhat placated by this response, Iris sighs a little and drops the subject. She doesn’t like to see suffering, even suffering that has long since passed, but she knows there’s nothing much she can do to help now, anyway.
Then his question makes it her turn to be uneasy. “...What do you mean?” Whose... What is he trying to ask- Oh. Her eyes widen slightly when she understands.
She looks away, rubbing her arm. “You mean, my, uh, my parents? ...I don’t know. I was left on a doorstep as a baby, and my adoptive aunt asked around, but... Well.” She shrugs. “...We didn’t even know I wasn’t human until my preteens. Then it got kind of hard to ignore.” She goes cross-eyed for a second, looking at the shimmering silver-pink horn on her forehead. “I scoured the internet until I found something about half-demons that sounded... Not completely crazy...”
It feels weird, taking her hat off, letting someone see her horn, but... Well, she’s finally met someone who might be able to help her find some answers. it’s worth the risk.
'It looks worse than it is.'
Iris doesn't look convinced. "It looks bad enough," she says quietly. "It must have hurt so much..."
