Mentaliter Instabilis AU
All of her worrying had been over nothing. Anna grasped his reasoning for saving her room visit until last and quirked an eyebrow. They eyed each other like they had been starving for the sight of the other. She watched him set her breakfast tray down without moving. He was as nervous as she was, she noted.
Hand out straight and palm up, Anna patiently waited for Mitchell to give her the medication she was expected to take each morning. “You’ll watch me take it, right?” She had every intention of taking it, but to the bathroom to flush, not to ingest. She didn’t need Mitchell getting fired over something to do with her. It wasn’t uncommon for patients to be watched and checked, but not have swallowed their medications.
“I’d like to draw outside or go swimming,” she replied. Her nervousness eased knowing Mitchell felt much the same as she did about seeing each other alone. Her cheeks faded to a slight pink. Her eyes fell to the floor as she considered what she could say next to him. She didn’t know where she fit in his life, but she did know he had become a very important part of hers. Carpe diem echoed from some recess in her mind. She’d worry later when she had hours that stretched into days without him.
At length, Anna raised shimmering hazel pools to his face. “I can be ready in about half an hour.” She had to make her bed, dry her hair, get changed and eat a bit of something. Probably the yogurt on the tray, she decided. She could take the roll and juice with her.
“Can we pretend it’s a date?” she asked on the spur of the moment. His answer would help her decide which activity she wanted to do. She bit her bottom lip, worrying Mitchell would find her request odd. It was odd, but not coming from her. She craved freedom and ordinary things people her age did. If they could pretend for the day, maybe it would get her through another week of being trapped and barely seeing him.
Mitchell looked down to her outstretched hand, expectantly waiting for that morning’s medication. He hesitated before taking the little pot from the cart he’d wheeled in, and waited even longer before turning and handing it to her.
“I don’t need to watch,” he left the pot in Anna’s hand and smiled, “If you accidentally dropped them or... spat them out, I wouldn’t know.” Hoping that she’d take the hint, Mitchell felt more at ease being around her. Things weren’t so awkward now knowing that Anna had been just as keen to see him alone, and just seeing her for himself seemed to have a calming effect. The only thing he wasn’t comfortable with was having to medicate her. He wasn’t a doctor, far from it, but something about Anna told him that she didn’t really need those pills.
Sitting down on the end of the bed whilst Anna started to get ready, Mitchell kept his eyes cast down. Waiting for her to get rid of her medication. It wasn’t until she told him what she’d like to do that day that he looked back at her; his smile turning into a grin.
“You draw?” The vampire felt slightly ridiculous for not knowing such a simple thing about Anna, especially with how he was starting to feel, but that didn’t tamp down his grin, “What do you draw?” He was more than happy to take her to do either of her chosen activities, but this was Anna’s time away from her room. It was different for her and important that he let her choose for herself how she’d spend that time. As long as he could spend it with her. And if she wanted to pretend it was a date...
“It can be a date,” he assured her quickly, standing from the bed. He’d been thrown slightly by her question, but barely gave pause before he answered it. “We don’t have to pretend. I’d like that.” He didn’t think it was odd. It wasn’t ideal, but had they not been in that hospital, Anna asking him on a date would have been the most normal thing. Why couldn’t it be normal now? Mitchell smiled brightly, “Where are you taking me?”

Stars peeked out from behind slow moving clouds that were highlighted by a half moon. The darkness hid the desire that flared in Anna’s eyes at Mitchell’s thank you kiss. She settled in the passenger seat with a longing sigh. After Mitchell cranked the car, the interior came to life with a greenish glow from the long control panel.
“Do we have enough gas?” she peered over at the indicator to see without waiting for his answer. “Will you help buckle me in? The latch always tries to pinch my fingers,” she asked with an angelic smile before he could pop the clutch and begin their road trip. “I’ll play any game you want,” she agreed, nodding her head. “I think I Spy first. Say when you’re ready. By the way I’m ready.” She held her hands up, keeping them out of the way for him to help with her seat belt. Even if Mitchell was fooled by her too innocent smile, her grace was tickling her insides with excitement, well aware of the angel’s thoughts.
“We should get far before we’ll need to stop,” Mitchell answered despite the angel already leaning over to check. He hadn’t checked how much petrol there was, and he hadn’t even fastened his own seat belt. He’d been far too eager to get going on their trip to think of much else. It was probably because of that, and his excitement to be spending time with Anna, that Mitchell missed her all too innocent smile. He reached over her to grab her seat belt, and brushed his hand against the angel’s side as he pulled it around.
“I’m ready,” Mitchell smiled, so close he was practically speaking into her ear, and clicked the latch into place for her, “What do you spy?” He pulled his own seat belt around himself and started up the car again. Even then, he assumed the tingling of Anna’s grace was because of her own excitement.

History repeating itself was a certainty that Mitchell seemed to have come to accept, at least as far as the vampires’ plans went. If Hetty was the only Old One left, it seemed as if Herrick would be pursuing his plan purely on his own impetus unless his own sire gave approval. “I suppose Herrick devises these schemes to relieve boredom? I think my brother Metatron and he should meet.” Anna’s lips twisted into a wry smile.
After the vampire had finally shared some of his own troubles, he relaxed with her on the bed. Anna happily cuddled into his arms. She hefted a small sigh of feeling when he gallantly pressed a kiss to her hand. “We have forever to change it to something better,” she replied comfortingly. She left off that it would probably take that forever to change anything. She ran her thumb over his hand. “I wouldn’t want to face forever without you.”
Mitchell remarked his job was to keep the troops in line. That was a duty Anna could empathize with the difficulty of carrying out. She worked alone these days, eschewing Heaven’s hierarchy of power. Nevertheless, most beings prefered to be told what to do and have one person to blame when they failed. Leadership had more pitfalls than perks.
“Smiting Herrick has always struck me as the best plan, but Heaven’s scrolls say differently.” The angel had wanted to smite Herrick from the first moment she saw him in France, forcing Mitchell into a Devil’s Bargain.
The following time Anna had run into Herrick, he had been with Mitchell again in France. Anna orders had expressly forbid her from ridding the world of the cherubic faced vampire that time. “I can only imagine it would upset some cosmic balance of power that I am unaware of if I were to off him. Promise me if you ever do it, you’ll let me watch at least?” she asked with a grim smile.
“I couldn’t face forever without you,” Mitchell admitted, looking down at Anna’s hand in his. The smile on his face slowly softened, until it was barely noticeable at all. He began to think about how different things could have been. A lot of it seemed to have come down to chance, or fate. From stumbling into Herrick in those woods, to Anna being the angel to answer his prayer, only to then stumble into her years later.
“That’s one thing we can thank him for,” he spoke honestly, but there was a pause before the vampire clarified what he meant. However true it was, it wasn’t among Mitchell’s favourite memories. “I wouldn’t be here if he’d not made me that deal, and here,” he leaned over to kiss Anna’s cheek, his smile returning more appreciative now than rueful, “Is exactly where I want to be.”
Leaning back, Mitchell propped his head against the headboard and went quiet again. It was rare to have someone you could talk to and trust so absolutely, especially for a vampire. He didn’t know if the angel realised just how much having her by his side meant to him, he just hoped she felt the same. But his previous grateful smile quickly turned into a grim one to mirror Anna’s own, as she talked about offing Herrick.
"When I do it,” he corrected, only half joking, “You’ll be the first to know. You can have a front row seat.” Looking back down to their clasped hands, Mitchell sighed, the seriousness of their talk quickly returning to him. “I think he does more damage to the cosmic balance alive than he’d do getting himself killed. He thinks the world belongs to us-- to the vampires. His schemes aren’t out of boredom they’re more... his ego,” he turned to Anna and smirked, “Any chance we could rewrite Heaven’s scrolls?”

An Deacra Fall Iad
“And you don’t?” Anna countered. “I suppose if you kill them all, you can have me to yourself. But then what would you eat?” It was a cold observation given Mitchell was more than capable of mass murder in one night alone. The rage he could summon at the smallest slight was terrifying. He hadn’t done this out of hunger at all, even if that need had been assuaged for the moment. It was incidental to his actual actions.
The angel raised a hand to rest against his cheek. She focused on him with an unearthly intentness, willing herself to harken back to her human days and understand jealousy. Mitchell’s particular brand of jealousy bred resentment. She rubbed her thumb across his cool skin and let her hand drop. Whether more or less humans died because of their relationship remained to be seen. She had a suspicion about what he had done after she had left Paris, and that was when he had thought her human.
“There’s a lovely cat you owe an apology just over there,” she nodded towards the dumpster. The alley cat come out, as if on cue. It mewled up at the vampire as if it had been expecting amends. Anna smiled at Mitchell suddenly. “Thank you for telling me the truth.” She turned from him, warring with her grace that wanted to comfort him further and her immediate duties. She assessed the scene in the alley with the age old dispassion of a soldier too used to death.
Mitchell’s presence at the crime was erased from the alley with a flick of her wrist and a flash of grace. Her grace sought out even the smallest of skin cells and incinerated them. Its familiarity with Mitchell made the erasure perfect. Anna felt every atom of what had been lost from Mitchell as he had killed in the night - hair, skin, saliva, clothing, and even the fog of his breath used to speak to his first victim. Her lips twisted as the evidence gave her a clear vision of what had transpired.
“Well, there’s a loose bear in London. He escaped from the zoo. How unfortunate,” she muttered to him, making her words reality. A sleeping bear appeared at the end of the alley, half hidden in the darkness of the dead end. He would be tranquilized and returned to the zoo before being put to sleep. Anna knew this would be a relief to the old, trapped bear who had long ago become disenchanted with his captivity and forced goodness. He was a bear, not a stuffed toy. The angel glanced at Mitchell, understanding dawning about his own lot since being recruited.
“You know about the girlfriend.” It wasn’t a question. She laid her hand on where his leather coat covered his forearm. “We’re going there.” That was all the warning he would get before they were standing just outside a galley kitchen and staring at Shelly lying in a pool of her own blood with her burgeoning belly sheltered by both her hands.
Leaning into Anna’s hand, her thumb brushing his cheek, Mitchell began to feel calm again. His jealousy had already been abated the moment he saw the angel, and had been quickly replaced with guilt. Not guilt for the people he’d killed, but regret that he’d not prayed sooner. He didn’t want to interrupt her important work, and had ended up doing just that anyway. Now the guilt mixed with an almost relaxed, soothing feel, one he put down to Anna’s touch.
It was all he could do to stop himself from reaching back out to her as she moved away. Even the alley cat, now miraculously healed, seemed wary to let him go near and ran when it spotted the sleeping bear. Mitchell understood Anna’s meaning immediately, however indirect it was. The damage he’d caused in one night was no different to that of a raging bear.
He stayed where he was, not saying a word as he stared at the bear and the angel approached him. In the next instant, barely given a chance to hold the angel back, they were whisked away from the alley. He’d finally got the contact back with her that he had craved so much, with the soothing feeling accompanying it, but it didn’t last when he realised where they were.
It was someone’s kitchen. The room was narrow and plain, and could have been modest before that evening. Now it carried the overpowering smell of blood, and a scene that could almost rival what had happened to her boyfriend. He’d suspected that his first victim’s wounds were from a fight with his aforementioned girlfriend, but Mitchell hadn’t expected anything as bad as this. He stared at the blood for a long moment, glad that his own hunger for it was quenched.
“She’s not dead,” but he suspected Anna already knew that, “Not yet.” Breaking away from the angel’s side, he stepped around the red puddle that had grown around where Shelly lay. There was the very faint, weak thump of a heartbeat. One the vampire could only hear in that moment as both himself and Anna were quiet. In a way, looking down at the beaten woman made Mitchell feel almost justified in killing that drunk.
“Can you save her?” he looked up to Anna suddenly, hopefully, and stepped back around the fallen woman, “Is that why we’re here?”
