When I see my principal walking towards me
More like Head of School, but yes.
Tbh i think 90% of teaching would be smooth sailing if only we could convince these kids that you can’t get good at something unless you actually practice it. Not being good at something isn’t an excuse to not do it, it’s a reason to do it more

Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in “blind auditions” with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.
so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.
…Then they put down a carpet, so that high heels didn’t clack on the floor, and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.
The testers didn’t even know that’s what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.
The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.
You can be sexist without knowing it. You can be racist without knowing it. This is not a moral failing; it is a moral imperative to remember that you are fallible, and take steps to limit the damage your squishy ape brain’s foibles can cause.
In a much-watched case, a Michigan agency has approved Nestlé’s plan to boost the amount of water it takes from the state. The request attracted a record number of public comments — with 80,945 against and 75 in favor.
Nestlé’s request to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to pump 576,000 gallons of water each day from the White Pine Springs well in the Great Lakes Basin was “highly controversial,” member station Michigan Radio reports. But despite deep public opposition, the agency concluded that the company’s plan met with legal standards.
“It is very clear this permit decision is of great interest to not only residents in the surrounding counties, but to Michiganders across the state as well,” MDEQ Director C. Heidi Grether said in approving the permit.
“In full transparency, the majority of the public comments were in opposition of the permit,” Grether added, “but most of them related to issues of public policy which are not, and should not be, part of an administrative permit decision.”
Under the plan, Nestlé will be approved to pump up to 400 gallons of water per minute from the well, rather than the 250 gallons per minute it had been extracting. The company first applied for the new permit in July 2016.

This. Is. The. Worst.
Every week in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Zibin Guo guides veterans in wheelchairs through slow-motion tai chi poses as a Bluetooth speaker plays soothing instrumental music.
“Cloudy hands to the right, cloudy hands to the left,” he tells them. “Now we’re going to open your arms, grab the wheels and 180-degree turn.”
The participants swivel about-face and continue to the next pose. Guo, a medical anthropologist at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has modified his tai chi to work from a seated position. Even though many of the participants are not wheelchair-bound, using the mobile chairs makes it easier for them to get through a half-hour of movement.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has given $120,000 in grant money to Guo to spread his special wheelchair tai chi curriculum. He started in Chattanooga, and has expanded his class offerings to Murfreesboro.

questions men should ask themselves more often
- am i being unnecessarily forceful/loud?
- am i talking over others? are those others mostly women?
- why does this person feel like that? how can i acknowledge their feelings?
- does she seem comfortable around me? if not, why?
- am i devaluing women as a joke/when they make me angry? am i insulting women’s appearance and sanity whenever they make me angry?
- am i listening to other people’s knowledge/experiences or am i only talking about my own? how can i share my knowledge/experiences in a respectful way that doesn’t monopolize conversation or infantalize others (primarily women)?
THIS.
Especially: “does she seem comfortable around me? if not, why?”
The amount of times “well meaning” married male coworkers have made me uncomfortable with “friendly” touching or by “being nice” and making comments on my appearance.

An excellent anti-linguistic-discrimination limerick for Grammar Day:
If you argue that language is weaker and the outlook for English is bleaker, consider the source of your silent discourse. Are you judging the speech, or the speaker?
