remember that this is always a slow time for the rpc. as we get deeper into the holiday season, remember that people are finishing classes and taking big tests. they're slammed at work or taking on extra jobs to pay the bills. people are stressed about money or family, figuring out flights or trips, dreading the colder weather, struggling to put food on the table. some people are experiencing more dark outside than light, which might mess their schedule up a bit. some deal with seasonal depression during these months.

when your dash is slower and quieter this time of year, and when less people are liking your posts or sending memes, it doesn't mean the community is dying or we're all headed for the end times. i understand that less interactions or less support might be discouraging, especially when some of us are already dealing with the doom and gloom of darker, colder months and the stress of the holiday season... but please don't turn around and scold people for their inactivity or their lack of enthusiasm. don't get fatalistic about the fate of this community and declare it prematurely dead. this period of time always happens every year. now is not the time for unfair expectations. now is the time for kindness, generosity, understanding, encouragement, and love. now is the time for "take your time with replies," and "talk to me if you need anything. i'm here for you."

Barely even minutes into his first team mission and Satoru was already bored. He leaned lazily against the rusty fence lining the grounds of the middle school he and his partner would be scouting as he scowled at his phone. Early. Why today had he decided to be early when he’d been paired with someone so painfully punctual as Suguru Geto? If he’d shown up late, the other boy would be there already and they could get started. Now he was stuck waiting when all he really wanted to do was storm into the building and get the damn case over with already. It wasn’t even a grade two– he probably could have handled this on his own if Yaga wasn’t such a stickler for team work. So irritating. So unnecessary.

Glancing back over his shoulder at the school, Satoru weighed the pros and cons of heading in alone and decided it wasn’t worth the headache of getting yelled at. He’d just have to suck it up, and when the time came to lay into whatever sorry curse was waiting for them inside, he’d prove to Yaga and Geto both exactly what a waste of time and talent it was to put him through these exercises.

The building was depressing as hell- all glass and concrete and sloppily mowed grass. It was an eyesore and he honestly wasn’t the least bit surprised it was haunted. Schools often were, but this place was ripe for it. The district must have had some serious budgeting issues if this is the kind of environment that was supposed to be fostering bright young minds. The thought did nothing to improve his mood. With mounting irritation, Satoru scrolled through his recent messages, confirming the time and place of their meeting and fired off a message. < Did the teacher’s pet get lost? >

The vibration of his phone was muffled, but still audible as Suguru jogged up the steep incline of the back entrance to Kosei Chugakko- A shortcut that wasn’t often employed by anyone not in ownership of a working car. Back when he’d attended this particular institution, he managed to pedal his mommy bike up the hill daily, still not an easy feat even for someone as athletically inclined as he was. Geto’s shirt clung to his broad back and shoulders via a thin layer of collective sweat as he strode across a small sports field with largely unkempt and wild grasses and weeds, waving his dominant arm to catch his assigned partner’s attention.

“I got a little sidetracked on my way, but I have a feeling I know where to begin-” he explained without prompting, not bothering to wait for Gojo to follow him so much as he assumed he would comply for the sake of the mission.

“I noticed a lot of students returning home near an older shopping district at the center of several mansions, apartment buildings that were built close to this school to raise the property value. The administration here’s never been especially on top of addressing bullying between students, but recently there has been gossip about a teacher trying to make progress by having the class submit anonymous complaints they feel they haven’t been able to voice in the past. When situations like that occur, it clearly drives the bullies into a corner as they begin to realize the real-world consequences of their actions. Not that you’d understand this, but it often causes them to take more extreme measures in silencing their victims. The entire class is complicit as well, as the weaker and quieter students don’t want to face the same treatment that the main target has to suffer.”

Using the side entrance to the main school building, Suguru turns right at the fork in the hallway to ascend the staircase.

“If there’s sites that would be the hottest for curse activity, it’d have to be the 2nd floor classroom, bathroom, or the roof.”

Pausing for a moment, he abruptly pivots on his heel and reaches an arm out to bar Gojo from moving any further up the halfway point between floors. “Odds are the victim’s trapped in the building, so making sure the curses can’t find him and restricting the use of our abilities should take precedence over ‘exorcism on sight’. There’s no point in running in carelessly if it means the spirits will become more hostile and hurt a civilian in the process. I know you keep bragging about some new technique you wanna figure out, but if you fire off anything weird, I’m holding you accountable. Do we understand each other?”

Satoru blinked slowly at Suguru over the rims of his glasses, before rolling his eyes. “Geez, enough already, I get it. Who put you in charge anyway huh?” He ducked beneath the outstretched arm and began climbing the staircase without glancing back. “I don’t need a whole lecture, let’s just get on with it.”

Moonlight poured in through the wide glass windows at the stairwell, casting pale features in sharp relief and reflecting eerily off his lenses. He didn’t wait for Suguru tp catch up and continued onward until he reached the second floor. The school wasn’t as large as some so finding the classroom in question was a simple matter. He paused in the hallway to look backwards over his shoulder at his partner.

“This’ll go faster if we split up, you know, he said boredly, already anticipating Suguru’s protests. That would probably count as ‘running in carelessly’ as far as he was concerned. Satoru was itching to start investigating but he resisted the urge to press on for now. For a small school, it was rotten with cursed energy- his six eyes had detected numerous minor spirits before they’d even entered the building though none of them were particularly noteworthy. “You could take the toilets while I clear the classroom and we could meet on the roof if nothing turns up.”

"Seems like your tongue is just as sharp as ever too." He slid his hands into his pockets and let his eyes drift from Suguru's to the sunset splayed out behind him. "What is it I'm missing this time? Will you tell me or is it too late again."

❛ you see, satoru, when girls like a boy in their class or even in their office, they give them chocolate. shame you didn't get to go to school (like a normal child). then again . . . i don't think you would have walked in to see a desk full of boxed chocolates. ❜ suguru grinned at that last bit, then followed it by popping a piece of candy into his own mouth.

Satoru scoffed and reached over with one long arm to snag a piece of chocolate from his friend's box without asking. Tossing it into his mouth he flopped back down on the floor cross-legged, and picked up one of their game cube controllers.

"I had no idea you were such a snob Suguru. I wonder if all your little admirers know the truth." The dorm television flickered to life as he reached over to steal another piece.
