I am deeply saddened to learn about Prince passing away today. He was a f!$king great artist. And a true one at that. He did not chase trends, get clouded by a bunch of suits telling him how he should make his records and did everything he could to keep ownership of his recordings. He is one of the masters. Not just as an artist but as an individual. When I look at my own music career and the struggle it takes to get where I want to get I realize more and more everyday to not seek the affirmation of what an industry wants but rather what a person that likes YOUR music wants. Thank U Prince. This is a photo of him playing Superbowl 2007. It was one of the darkest times in my life. I was sitting in a hospital with my grandfather ( my mentor and musical hero ) who had suffered a stroke right before Christmas 2006. I was heartbroken to see my Papa like that but as I watched Prince perform while my grandfather lay there I was inspired so much because my Papa loved bluegrass and country but mainly Great Artists. I wonder how many times #merlehaggard took shots like these for the multiple albums he made? When I look back on my favorite era of country and my favorite artists ( Cash, Williams, Nelson, Hag ) they were a voice of the people and each one had their own style. All had unique looks and sound but it was different. It wasn't any assembly line B.S. It was the real deal that crossed genres because people respect a person singing what's in their soul. Life passes at a glance so when we have the chance let's live. And sing a glorious song. One that makes you cry. Makes you smile. Laugh. Love. Merle Haggard was an American Icon. He is one of the last of a very special breed of Country Music Singers. Him, along with Cash, Willie, and a slew of others truly were unique. The stories he told were from the life he lived and he was an emtertainer from the old school of thought. When I saw him play at The Opry I saw the way he led the band and every move was made by watching him. Nothing pre fabricated. Country Music his own way at it's finest. There are countless barrooms I have played in performing his songs and I dare say there will never be another singer-songwriter that can write a song then deliver it with the conviction he could. My Papa, my hero and the reason I play music, would have been celebrating his birthday tmw. This week I was lucky enough to be home with my family and spend time with my grandma. She is an extremely strong person and very wise. I am so thankful that Her and I spent time together this week cuz I cherish it. She told me to keep working hard at my music and she wants to see me realize success in Nashville. So thats what I am gonna do Granny. For You. For Papa. This is my Papa's most prized guitar that is now mine. Before I left I sung her a song on it that he used to sing and had her hold the guitar. Me doing some #Brad Paisley type picking. I am a big fan of his style of playing. When I am on stage my playing style is really blended but I have always loved chicken pickin the most. It's weird cuz I am such a fan of grunge but also bluegrass and country pickin. I do like having a little breakup from my amp mixed with the snap tho.
