š»amazing, pt.1
Always need good news stories
Just some positivity, because we could all use some more of this in our lives.
i was looking for writing prompts and came across what is now the funniest thing ive ever seen
It may have taken me a few weeks to stop obsessing over myself, but hereās my redone Peggy cosplay for Animate! (PC:Ā Pedro Hesike)
Iām actually so very happy with the process and the effort put into this costume that I have nothing to critique myself on. I worked hard, and I can finally put this project to rest (though Iāll pull it out for future cons if I need something quick lol).
What are my next projects? Even I donāt know. I have some ideas, though⦠If you have any questions about this cosplay, feel free to drop me an ask!
New study projects a stunning drop in 2018 millennial voter turnout in battleground states
The 2016 presidential election ā and its outcome ā may have given plenty of Americans a new sense of urgency when it comes to civics.
But a new study projects that 40 million Americans who voted last year will likely not show up at the polls for the 2018 midterms.
And that two-thirds of those ādrop-offā voters will be millennials, unmarried women and people of color.
The report, just out from the Voter Participation Center and Lake Research Partners, āComparing the Voting Electorate in 2012-2016 and Predicting 2018 Drop-off,ā notes that many of those expected not to cast a ballot next year live in key battleground states like Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Ohio. Young people in America, REGISTER TO VOTE AND GET TO THE POLLS NEXT YEAR
THIS MATTERS
YOUR VOTE MATTERS SO MUCH OKAY
Just look at the difference young people getting out and voting made in the UK general election this yearā¦young voters CAN make a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE by getting out and votingĀ
And I know this isnāt a presidential election but it is in some ways EVEN MORE IMPORTANT
Because the president canāt do anything without congress and the senate on his sideā¦but likewise, if the Republicans get a majority it means it will be easier for that disgusting sack of stinking dog-vomit Donald Trump and his party of traitors and criminals to push through the DISGUSTING things they want to try and inflict on the country and its people
Get out and vote democrat next year and keep the Republicans from getting a blank check to try and push through their bigoted, evil bullshit
Iām pretty sure the biggest barrier to young people voting isnāt not caring, itās not knowing.
Am I registered? Shit, who knows? Iāve moved five times in the last four years. I think I registered, but that was a year ago, did I change districts since then? Where even are the polling places in this town? What are their hours? I know I submitted a registration, but did they get it? I didnāt get a confirmation. Did they lose my form? Am I even eligible? Who knows? Oh well, Iām sure I can always register in the days leading up to the ā whoops, thereās a deadline and itās already gone by.
This is one of those civic skills that you would really think would be taught in high school, and ā surprise! ā it isnāt.
So hereās how to check which district youāre in and who your rep is.
Hereās how to find out if youāre registered.
Here are the deadlines for when to register.
Hereās how to register, if it turns out youāre not.
Hereās how to find local polling places.
Of course, all of this ā in the way of Tumblr, and the internet more generally ā will be lost to the vagaries of cyberspace by the time November rolls around. So hey: tag it withĀ āvoting referenceā and youāll always be able to find it again.
Bullshit. The biggest barrier is absolutelyĀ people not caring. Or least it is for a rather significant cut of the population. Itās not entirely peopleās faultāas stated by the previous poster, we utterlyĀ and completelyĀ fail to teach our citizens and future voters even the bare bones of how are democracy actually fucking works (vast oligarchy conspiracy? or just plain good olā fashioned bureaucratic idiocy? You decide!).
Like I have had full on debates with numerous millennials, men and women of various ethnicities, about the importance of midterm voting.
And you know what they say to me?
āIt doesnāt matter anyway.ā
āNothingās ever gonna change so why bother?ā
These are the same people who call me a sheep because I dare to be okay withĀ paying my taxes. That Iām just notĀ āwokeā enough to understand. Like if Iām not aware that my taxes go to the military industrial complex. Well, I got news for you motherfucker. Itās also going to roads, and firefighters, teacherās salaries, and in California itās going to wildlife conservation better public transportation etc. You want this idealized system where you just fill the potholes yourself (as one of these folks recently suggested to me)? Then put your goddamn money where you mouth is and fill the fucking pothole. Until then? Stop complaining about shit if youāre not gonna drop a ballot. FUCKING VOTE.
āBut Deeeeeex, what about gerrymandering?ā Fucking vote for people who are going to pass bills that will stop gerrymandering then, jesus fucking christ.
This fucking nihilistic apathy is the fucking reason shit doesnāt motherfucking change, assholes. And becauseĀ of that attitude weāre gonna lose to the frothing-at-the-mouth Trump supporters who are absolutelyĀ gonna show up to the midterm elections.
And if you were one of those goddamn holier-than-thou Bernie bros., I swear to fucking god, if you donāt do your motherfucking part in this, while going on and on about how youāre gonna move to Canada or New Zealand or whereverāyou are the fucking problem.
