before spock left for starfleet, amanda gave him a sweater because he was probably gonna get cold (him being vulcan + that thing that good moms do, making sure you wear a sweater when you go out) and spock has completely refused to wear it (gay and petty) but one day when jim was really sick and cold, spock let him “borrow” it (jim didn’t give it back) and it became a comfort object for jim so now he wears it whenever he’s sick/sad/whatever.

so in journey to babel after spock recovers from the medicine and giving blood but jim and sarek are still recovering in sickbay, spock secretly brings jim the sweater, who immediately puts it on and cuddles up in it.

and the next day sarek sees jim in it but doesn’t think anything of it. because humans always wear sweaters. but when amanda comes in to sickbay to see sarek, she sees jim. and she KNOWS that’s the sweater she gave spock. so HER immediate conclusion is that spock and jim are dating. and she talks to spock about it.

and spock thinks that amanda thinks that spock giving the sweater away was rude so he’s trying to apologize for giving the sweater to jim. and amanda thinks that spock is apologizing for not telling her about him and jim dating.
