Hooked: Being A Screen Addict.
An addiction is a brain disorder characterized by compulsive stimuli despite adverse consequences. Screen addiction is a very young form of addiction which grew with the entertainment industry. It started with rise of television industry and as the internet took entertainment industry to the next level, the screen addiction became more widespread than we think. Now this doesn't means that the entertainment industry is to blame. Entertainment industry has been there since the starting of civilizations (Between 1935 and 1941, Electronic Television were sold in UK, Germany, USA, and other countries).
History Of Screen & Internet
1935 - The first Electronic TV was available to public. Before that mechanical TVs were available.
1991- The First world wide web page was created.
2004 - Facebook was made available to college students.
2005 - Youtube was launched and it brought free online video hosting and sharing to the masses.
2006 - Â Amazon Unbox was launched in US.
2007 - iPhone was introduced.
2007 - Netflix moved into streaming.
2012 - Google play was launched and movies were made available online.
The new generation don't want to sit around a TV to watch their favorite television series. When was the last time you watched a youtube video? How many Television series have you finished since the introduction of Netflix? How long has it been since you read a newspaper? How long it has been since you went on a hike? And where are you actually reading this article? One may argue that internet in not addictive. Let me tell you about Bibliomania which can be a symptom of obsessiveâcompulsive disorder which involves the collecting or even hoarding of books to the point where social relations or health are damaged. In other words it is a symptom of addiction to books, and we all know internet is much more reinforcing and rewarding (the two properties of addictive stimuli) than books.
Gambling and checking your phone for text, instagram or twitter feed, or any other notifications have the same effect on your brain. They both lead to secretion of dopamine - the feel good hormone. The use of a screen to watch Youtube videos, Amazon Prime movies, Netflix TV series stimulates the same area of the brain of a screen addict that does a drug abuse for a drug addict. The algorithm of the recommendation system of every platform which may be video hosting, subscription based, or even social is written in such a way that the users get a greater dose of dopamine when they revisit that particular platform. This is done using the user history and other information. The better the engineers developing the algorithm are at their job the more dopamine is released in the brain of the viewer. The more we use the platform the better the recommendations get. A study conducted at McMaster University in Canada found that college-aged students who spent excessive amounts of time on the internet exhibited more depression, anxiety, impulsiveness and an inability to manage time and routines than those who did not. A recent article shows how screen addiction is affecting our travels.
Over the past decade, the concept of Internet addiction has grown in terms of acceptance as a legitimate clinical disorder often requiring treatment. Researchers are divided over whether Internet addiction is a disorder on its own or a symptom of another underlying disorder. There is also debate over whether it should be classified as an impulse-control disorder or an obsessive-compulsive disorder rather than an addiction. In a recent article, May Wilkerson suggested that internet addiction i.e. screen is not a correct term people who have OCD for internet use. He argues that people who use excessive internet to play gambling game may have gambling addiction and people who use excessive internet to shop may have shopping addiction.
No, Internet is a revolution and is a great thing. It has made so many reforms possible. But with powers comes great responsibility. Sorry, I meant every great thing has some bad results as well. Internet is like vacation which is great but one cannot just be on a vacation all the time. Vacation is important and healthy but only when taken in the right amount. Some people may occasionally enjoy alcohol, other people may never try alcohol and still others may be addicted to alcohol.
How Is Screen Addiction Different From Other Addictions?
Other addictions have a very basic first step to remove the stimuli from the environment and other addictions need the addict to stay away from the substances he is addicted to. This can't be the case with screen addiction. A screen addict cannot really remove screens or internet from his life. In many other ways the screen addiction is very similar to other addictions like drug abuse. Extent of the problem. Why screen addiction is so vast because screen addiction is often misinterpreted because the time on the screen can be caused due to so many stimuli. According to Scholastic Choices February 2018 edition 50% of teens feel addicted to their phone. Teens spend more than 2.5 hours a day watching television or videos and 28 minutes a day reading. During their homework 76% listen to music, 60% text, 51% watch TV, 50% use social media. The average teen's total screen time, not including homework screen time is 9 hours which is more that they sleep.  Jean Twenge in her article explains how the smartphone affected an entire generation of kids (after the millennials) and how this particular generation is completely unprepared for adulthood.
