“I think that’s why shopping online is easier especially when you have a list. You don’t have to walk by all these cool, very tempting items. Though they do have all those cool ads so maybe we’re screwed no matter what,” she joked. “Or I could just save money and buy her a bunch of boxes instead. Think she’d be happy no matter what. So what are you getting your family for the holidays? Hopefully something good.”

“Yes, but where’s the fun in that?” Luca joked with a chuckle. “Although online shopping you run into the issue where the website suggests other things that you might like.” He added as that seemed to be a trap in it’s own way. Maybe the biggest issue was that Luca lacked self-control when it came to treating the people closest to him. “There is no need to buy them. I have so many delivery boxes that you could just come by my work and grab them.” He teased her but it wasn’t untrue.  “I got my father a watch he’s been looking at, a pair of earrings for my mother, and I got my sister a custom planner for something she’s been working on.”

With a nod - one that was probably the slightest bit exaggerated as she agreed to his statement - and she offered him a small smile. “I can’t say I disagree with you there.” She admitted, taking a look at all the floats around them as the parade was getting ready to start. “As far as I know the Inn doesn’t even have a float, but if they do I didn’t volunteer to do anything with it. That idea just, doesn’t sit well with me.” She shuttered slightly, the thought of all these people watching her making her nervous. “I think if I ever were in the parade, it would almost have to be with children or something like that. Something that would take all the attention and I could just focus on that.” 

“It’s just not my idea of fun.” Luca said as he usually avoided participating in things that were going in involve having a lot of eyes on him. It just wasn’t his idea of fun in the slightest, and he much preferred being in the crowd where he could just watch things go by. “I was more than fine with throwing money at the cause, but that was about where my help with it stopped.” Luca added as he hadn’t even really had the time to help out with it this year.  He nodded along at Nia’s words. “That is very true. Children seem to steal the show a lot of the time, which would work out in your favor.”

“You know, I never even remember we have a gift shop.” she laughed shaking her head at how insanely ridiculous she sounded. “I mean, I see people in there nearly every day coming out with the “Welcome Baby” balloons that we sell, but I never actually remember it exists. The cafeteria however..” she paused. “That could be a place that I could really see it being useful.” she laughed, knowing that she herself spent more money on coffee there than most doctors really. “I’m all in. I think it’s a genius idea. Good luck pitching it to the committee; if you need someone to back you, I’d love to.” 

“To be fair, you probably don’t have enough time to end up down there.” Luca replied as he could only assume that she was pretty busy. He suspected everyone who worked at the hospital was always running around unable to get a spare few minutes to themselves. It was a noble line of work. “That is fair enough too, everyone needs to eat and some of you all pretty much live at the hospital.” Luca replied as he knew the possibility of businesses that could use them was almost endless.  “I will let you know when I end up going to talk to the community. Maybe I should get a list of signatures of those who back the idea.”

“I’m definitely nervous now.” Being with him made anything special. Going to his favorite place, could mean he was finally going to ask her to be his girlfriend? “ I highly doubt that. You haven’t done anything to disappoint me so far.” well, maybe one thing. He’d yet to say how he was feeling or make any sort of move. Which was a bit upsetting.  She was afraid that maybe you should imagined this whole thing, and he only saw her as a friend. Which would honestly crush her if it were true. “ I never thought I’d actually say this, but I’m glad business has been slow. You deserve a break, focus on things outside of your work.  I’ve never met anyone who enjoys work as much as you.” She half teased. “Worry about the swamping later. For now, it means more time for us to explore all Bridgeport has to offer for the holiday’s.” When he asked about her own life, she felt bad. There wasn’t too much to report. “Oh, you know just trying to help all of my roommates navigate through life shit.  The marinas always dead this time of year, so mostly, it’s just maintenance for some of the bigger boats we house.  The most exciting things I do are with you.”

“I am hoping you’ll enjoy it.” Luca said as he felt there was a lot of pressure involved. If she didn’t enjoy it Luca was going to be disappointed as he wanted her to have fun.  “My job always comes in waves where it is busier. It just has to do with the type of work I do. There are times of year where people are more worried about their finances than others. It just happens that the holidays are a time where most people aren’t paying someone to figure it out.” Luca replied as often there were other things on people’s minds the last couple of months a year. It wasn’t until later on that people remembered to worry about it.  It was something that had happened every year since he opened the business and he didn’t worry about it now.  “There is usually quite a lot to do.” Luca agreed with a nod of his head. Every Christmas of his entire life had been filled with magical activities that were thrown by the town. “I suppose that happens when you live with a lot of people.” He said, as he lived alone so Luca couldn’t really relate to that sort of thing  anymore.  “I better not disappoint.”

“Oh come my dear Luca. It isn’t that hard to stick to a list when it comes to shopping. Well maybe it’s harder when you have a shitload of money,” Sophie teased. Really she was proud of him for starting his own company like he did. It had to be hard but he had made it seem easy and he was good at it. “Yeah but she’s at the age when I could just give her a box and she’d be happy. Think buying these toys just helps me feel like a better mom,” she shrugged.

“I just always find cool things I hadn’t thought of, and then  I end up picking them up too.” Luca replied with a slow shake of his head. The issue was that he didn’t have a lot of self-control when it came to his loved ones. “I suppose this way it is a double win though. You get her a cool toy, and  she’s got some boxes to play with.” He chuckled, as he could remember being young and entertained by anything.

Enzo smiled warmly at Luca’s comment, lifting his Americano again to his mouth. He took another sip of the warm liquid down his throat before sitting the now empty cup down. “Honestly, amico, now you’re just trying to butter me up.” The Italian joked. He glanced down at his watch and remembered his meeting after lunch, looking back to his friend. “I’m afraid I will have to run though, Luca. I’m serious about you sending me an e-mail and us sitting down to discuss this further. We can really flesh this out, signoro.”

“Perhaps.” Luca replied with a chuckle. Although in reality the man was just the type of person who was kind to others. He nodded his head at the man’s words. “Of course, I will make sure to keep you in the loop.” Luca said as he knew this would roll more smoothly with someone like Vincenzo on his side. “I will see you soon.”

Luca looked at all the floats as they were beginning to line up for the parade. It looked as though most of the town was here and it was bound to be quite the show so he couldn’t blame them. He looked over and Nia and gestured to the crowd. “While I am glad that my business has a float in the parade, I am glad that I don’t need to be in it. I am not sure how I wonder handle all these eyes on me.”

Shelby would often slip his name into conversations with friends, and his sister as a matter of fact. He’d become the center of her world and she found herself feeling sad when they weren’t together. Which was frightening in some ways. She didn’t want to lose him, and worried he’d find someone better. Prettier. More interesting. “I’m glad to hear it.” She flirted subtly as she shook out her hair, letting it fall naturally. She always felt her prettiest when he looked at her like that. “Excellent, I’m dying to try it.” She considered Isla a very good friend, and for a long time had a little girl crush on her. Until she’d met Luca. She had confided in her a little bit about how much she liked Luca and her hopes for the future. “Come on. Can I get a hint? Surprises always make me nervous.” She confessed, though she hoped he might ask her to be more. “I’m all set. How was work?”

“I hope you like it.” Luca said as he didn’t want her to be disappointed. He didn’t want to be the reason that she felt any sort of disappointment, even something small. He knew that he was happy around her and wanted the feeling to be mutual.  “Okay, that is fair enough. I am taking you to one of my favorite places in town.” Luca explained to her as he could understand not wanting to be surprised. There was a certain sense of anxiety that went with that. Luca was just hoping that Shelby would  enjoy their time together, even when they weren’t doing anything overly special. “Work is starting to slow down a bit for the Holidays. But that just means I am going to be swamped come the New Year.” Luca replied as that was  when people started to worry about tax season. “What about yourself?”

Sophie grinned when she saw her old friend. Someone she had known basically her whole life. “This is why you need to write out a list and stick to it. If it’s not on the list, then you don’t buy it. Though that’s easier said than done sometimes especially with a kid,” she joked. “I think I’m more excited about Christmas and toys than Rainy is to actually play with them. I started shopping for her back in June and have just hidden them all away.”

“Yeah, a list would be smart, but I also think I’d have trouble sticking to it.” Luca replied, and he didn’t even have the excuse of having a kid. He often just found something to buy that was better than what he’d originally had in mind.  “There is something magical about watching children on Christmas morning.” Luca said, not that he was able to relate fully as he didn’t have any children of his own.

“Oh that’s such a neat idea!” Anni nodded, listening as the other spoke. “Granted there’s no way it would work at the hospital, but the coffee shops, the bakeries, all of that would probably benefit from that.” she smiled, nodding enthusiastically. “I think my wife’s Inn would work well with that method. Leave a good review or something and you can exchange it for Bridgeport Dollars that can be used in other places around town. That’s a great idea! Have you mentioned it to the city council board yet? I think that idea would go really far!”

“Yeah, not unless the hospital gift shop or something gets involved.” Luca replied as obviously the plan was more geared towards locally owned businesses.  “Yeah, exactly. If people have incentives, I really think the whole thing could work.” He said as he knew that people liked a good deal. Luca really felt that they were onto something.  “I am planning on mentioning it to the council, I just wanted to see if other people thought it was a good idea.”

   “He was a smart man. I looked up to him and I think he is the reason I am the man I am today. Someone who tries to be kind, caring, helpful and understanding,” he replied with a smile on his face and a chuckle.  “You got to do what you love,” he added nodding his head. “It really is.”

“That’s amazing. I really am trying to also do that. Kinda branch out and meet new people. Make new friends,” he nodded as he spoke. “How is that going? Being more social?”

“Those type of people are the best ones to have in your life.” Luca replied as he knew that personally he’d been lucky to have people in his life that he could look up to as well. They were not people that he took for granted.  “I agree, because life is to short otherwise.” He said with a nod. 

“It’s easier said than done sometimes.” Luca replied as in a place as small as Bridgeport he felt that he  knew most people. “I am doing my best, but sometimes I fall back into my habits of just going home and to work.”

Luca sent a smile to Sophie as he noticed her in the store. “Are you doing early Holiday shopping too?” He asked as Luca knew that he usually tried to get all his shopping out of the way sooner rather than later. “I swear every year I start shopping earlier than the year before, but still don’t finish until the week before because I think of last minute items that I want to buy.” He said to the woman who he’d known as long as he could remember.

Nodding his head, the Italian reached for his Americano again. He took another sip of the caffeinated beverage and swallowed the warm liquid, savoring the taste on his tongue. “Perhaps we can figure out a way to attract some tourist, package deals of some kind with hotel stay included. I know this town offers plenty of history so tours might be something people would like.” Enzo was merely speaking aloud various options now. “I can find some time slots in my schedule and e-mail you. We can set up another meeting, work this idea out if you’d like, amico.”

“See, this is why I came to you about this. I knew you’d be able to come up with some good ideas.” Luca replied as it was good to have a conversation with someone who he could bounce ideas off of. Both men seemed to care about the town and wanted it to do well.  “People do love a good tour, and we’ve got plenty of things to see.” Luca agreed as their were a few good historical sites.  “Yes, another meeting for be great. Then we’ll both have some time to think things over.”

Opening the door, she greeted him with a smile and practically jumped into his arms to hug him. “I know we just saw each other, but missed you so much.” She said, her eyes looking into his eyes. She secretly wished he’d kiss her. They hadn’t actually discussed dating yet. She didn’t know if she should make the first move or not. He seemed interested too. “Come on in, I’m almost ready.” She just had to finish getting dressed. Luca was always ahead of schedule, which made her love him even more. He reminded her of the kind of men in old black and white movies. A true gentleman. “Is that the famous hot chocolate Isla raves about?” She asked about the thermos as she pulled a sweater on. “Where are you whisking me away to today?”

Luca couldn’t help but  smile softly at her words. The reality was, he’d spent a lot of their time apart just waiting for when he could see her again. Luca often found his mind wandering to her when he was supposed to be doing other things. “I’ve missed you too.” He admitted as there was no point in denying it by now. Luca followed her into the house. “Okay, perfect.” He replied as the man didn’t mind having to wait for a few minutes. Luca was pretty laid back when it came to that sort of thing. He nodded at the woman’s words. “Yes, that would be correct.” He replied, a bit surprised at the mention of his sister. Luca knew that the two woman knew each other, but he wasn’t entirely sure what the details were there.  “I can’t tell you that, it’s a surprise.”

  “Ya. My grandfather always says it’s important to listen to people and learn, and remember things about them especially how they like their coffee and drinks,” he replied shaking his head as he thought about his grandfathers words of wisdom. Evan tried so hard to follow his grandfather’s advice and those advice helped shape who he was and he knew his grandfather would be proud of the man he was today. 

“Correct but honestly I love my job and would not change it for the world. It did take me awhile to learn how to balance work and life,” he said as he took a sip of his drink. “Glad to hear that. So what’s new?”

“He sounds like a smart man.” Luca replied as he knew that remembering things about people was an easy way to show that you cared. It was something that was easy to do, and made all the difference. 

“That is the thing that matters.” Luca said as so many people weren’t that lucky. He couldn’t imagine having a job that he disliked, especially if he was going to work at it for years.  “Work and life balance is very important.” He added as it was quite difficult to do.  “I have been spending a lot of time actually trying to socialize more actually.”

“Yeah, it was definitely a doozy,” he laughed, taking a sip of his coffee. “Exactly,” he agreed, “Navigating this town when I first moved here was next to impossible. Thankfully I figured it out because I’m perfect and have no flaws, but it was like trying to navigate a foreign country with how everyone was intertwined,” he joked. 

“I think that everyone that is from here is just so used to it that nobody bothers to think about how anyone might be confused.” Luca replied as he knew he didn’t think much about it. He just navigated his way around the streets he’d known his whole life. “Someone should make up a town map with all the important things at the very least.”

“I know, it’s what made me fall for you.” She admitted with mild embarrassment. “ you’re the sweetest man I’ve ever met, you almost don’t seem real to me sometimes..” It was rare that you found a man that was the equivalent of a fairytale character. Yet here he was. “ I always worry I’m gonna wake up from a beautiful dream and you’re not gonna be here.” It was silly, but an honest fear she had. “ you can thank Verity for this. She’s the one that helped me. She’ll be had a great figure, but she wasn’t used to dressing like this. She didn’t have the confidence, but the way that Luca was making her feel tonight, maybe she would find it. “Like what? Do you leave the cap off your toothpaste when you’re done?” She teased him. “we all have our quirks, but I’m sure I can learn to except yours. I’m just worried that you’re going to change your mind about me.” 

“You don’t need to worry about me going anywhere.” Luca told her as he was the type of person who was all in when it came to things. It wasn’t something he thought would change any time soon. “You look great and I am glad that Verity told you so.” Luca told her as he’d met Shelby’s roommate in passing. It was almost hard not to meet people in a town that was this small. He was certain he could pick out the woman in question if he passed her on the street.  “No, but sometimes if I am in a hurry I squeeze from the bottom instead of at the end.” He replied as he knew some people probably thought it was just as bad. “But lets not worry about that tonight, lets just enjoy being here.”
