Lynpheans do not call their realm Lynphea.
First off, disclaimer: this is for my AU.
Also, hear me out.
I’ve been keeping myself busy with learning about a mix of things including Aztec mythology, indigenous cultures pre or at the beginning of colonization, and the creation of Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
One story that I have known for a while and does make me wonder a lot is how the Yucatán peninsula or region got its name. The Spanish had asked for the name of the region. And it’s highly speculated that Yucatán is badly translated Mayan of “I don’t understand what you are saying”. The Spanish thought they just answered their question.
And after learning that a lot of famous locations have other names (more beautiful names) by indigenous groups of the area that were given colonized names, I began to think about this applying to the world of Magix.
So Lynphea, I like to think is just badly translated gibberish. They asked the locals “what is this place” the locals replied with “huh?” And they took that as that must be the name.
When in reality, the Lynpheans (the indigenous ones at least) call it Tlalocan. Which Tlalocan is the lush, paradise-like, afterlife of Aztec mythology. I like to think in Lynphean terms, it’s just means “the Goddess’s paradise” since they believe this is what their matron has left for them and in return they tend and honor it in her name.
Just a little tidbit of what I have in store for their culture and belief and what it’s based off of.
Any questions, feel free to ask.
So one thing in my AU that I want to mention is that a lot of the main characters have met or known each other before.
And I’m talking the boys and the girls.
A big one is Flora, Sky, and Brandon. They’ve known each other since they were kids and it was mostly because of realm relationships (it’s a rocky one that each realm is trying to reconcile with small progress). So they see each other a lot and do get close where they bicker like siblings. And also, Flora’s story helps shape Sky’s character development.
I have it so Flora and Layla are also very close and have known each other longer than she knows Sky and Brandon. To the point that Layla is pretty protective of her, knowing her past and all that she has gone through. Andros is a major ally of Lynphea and have a great relationship due to similar pasts. Casander, Flora’s older brother, plays a major part in this relationship.
Flora and Stella met a few times . Flora remembers. Stella…does not. I have a scene where the group sans Layla, Sky, and Brandon find out she’s actually a royal and Stella’s like “if you are a royal, then why haven’t we met?” “Stella we have met. Quite a few times actually” “We did?!?” Same with Layla and Stella.
Obviously Stella, Sky, and Brandon have met but I like to see it as through school. Which starts the whole identity swap thing.
I have an idea if Riven and Helia running into each other when they were younger. Still need to flesh it out though.
I’m thinking of Tecna briefly meeting some of them while on a business trip with her parents.
But these are the ideas I have so far. To kinda add more of an interconnectedness within the group before they become some sort of found family friend group kinda deal.
Ok, ok, listen… if you say “sea, sports and dancing” I’m gonna think of ✨Brasil✨ I wanted to use a bit of that as inspiration for Aisha (and all the fashionable girls that appeared on my Instagram)
Aisha was raised under strict rules, she wanted to learn how to dance to feel free, and for Samba I’m pretty sure you have to be joyful to be able to dance it, I thought it would be cute. And I can tied it to capoeira, for badass reasons. But since I gave her mermaids traits, so I also want to add a fluid dance that moves like water.
My Instagram recommendations is full of people dancing all of a sudden, and I’m gonna use it as an excuse to practice drawing dancing poses.
A Crash Course of the Geography of Lynphea
Alright, I told you I would make some posts about some of the aspects of Lynphea so here is one of them. This is just a light overview. I have been watching too many of those TikTok’s where this man goes over different regions of the world and talks about their geography, culture, ethnicity. I forget his name but I love his videos when they pop up on my feed.
But without further ado…
Lynphea is actually two kingdoms (or territories if you are Lynphean): Northern and Southern. It used to be united and just Lynphea. Colonization and wars lead to a divide. Where one region was willing to assimilate to colonization and forgo the old tradition (Southern) while the other wanted to hold on to the old traditions and resist colonization (Northern).
The Southern Territory didn’t fully assimilate though they figured out a way to mash urbanization with nature. They just aren’t as spiritually connected to nature or their matron goddess. They acknowledge that she’s there but that’s about it. The only thing spiritually that they acknowledge is the Black Willow. It’s a sacred site and revered as one.
The South region is what you see in the show, sort of. It is mostly floral, deciduous, tropical, and colorful, and full of large insects. The Southern Lynpheans work with the creatures as if they are livestock to create textiles, artisan, crops, etc. (They are a huge machine in the textile industry, they became one of the fashion capitals in the Magic Dimension). They mostly stick to a vegetarian lifestyle, eating plant based proteins instead of meat.
The Northern Territory has a strong spiritual connection with nature. They live in harmony with the spirits there and the spirits are revered with the utmost respect. They never urbanize but work with nature when it comes to living (homes within or in the canopy of trees, within rock formation, living plants that form furniture, etc.). They strongly acknowledge and worship the matron goddess, Lyn (note: this was the name given by Non-Lynpheans. Lynpheans, especially the Northerners, have their own name for her in their language that is in the works).
The North region is more rugged and various in biomes (it’s also much larger than the South region). The forests are a mix of tropical and deciduous. There are more wild animals than insects. The Northern people are omnivorous but depending on your status, it’s more of a luxury. They do farm and have livestock but will hunt. Though this is more of the lower status. I see them as the Navi from the Avatar series where if they hunt, they thank the spirit and honor it. (I will get into the people more in a later post).
There is a large willow tree that is called the Mother Tree in the center of the region (Think the tree in the swamp region in Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra). It is believed to be the final resting place of Lyn herself and the birthplace of Lynpheans. It is believed to hold a powerful entity called The Heart of Lyn. Leading to the heart is a small open seam in the tree that is well hidden. Within that seam, when you go deeper, are old hand prints painted on the wall of the first Lynpheans (think cave paintings) along with Lynphean Moss Garnet (a precious stone only found in Northern Lynphea. It’s also highly protected. Only Lynpheans can have them. Will also have a post on this stone and its significance). But it’s incredibly hard to get there. Around her roots is a massive cave with an ecosystem of its own (based off of the Hang Son Doong cave in Vietnam). It’s heavily haunted by spirits. No one but people of strong spiritual background will travel through it.
(Will go into more detail in another post).
There are mountains: floating ones in one region and a large treacherous mountain where the peak that is so high, the spirits in the heavens touch it (It’s a Brother Bear reference. And yes they do call it “the mountain where the lights touch the earth”). The floating mountains are accessed by windsurfing large leaves (to be fair, Lynpheans like to do it for fun). They are also much colder with taiga biome in patches on them. There is also snow. The large mountain (to be named soon) is basically considered suicide to climb. No one has survived the climb, except for one Lynphean.
There is a desert region that is vast with multiple oases that seem to move. The people here are nomadic, hence the name Desert Nomads. They mostly move to find these oases. Once they feel they have used up enough of one oasis’ resources, they move to find another. There was also once a time that they lived in the mountain walls but most have moved out into the desert as colonization and war ramped up (think Mesa Verde in Colorado).
There are also old abandoned mines scattered around the mesas in the desert region. It’s where other realms had mined for the moss garnets. Not legally or ethically may I add. Many entrances to those mines have been caved in (whether it was on purpose or accidental is unknown).
This is all I have for right now. Again this is for my AU. I have more ideas for posts such as the differences between the people of each territory, a crash course on their matron goddess and their mythologies, etc etc.
Lynphea is my main focus right now but I will likely do these aspects for other realms. I have some ideas for them. Nothing too concrete though. One idea is the concept I have that each realm’s fairies transformations has a certain style and element that separates each from another. For example, Magic Winx transformation has the reoccurring theme to them (the go go boots, the sparkly simple style, (mainly) monochromatic color scheme), but in my AU there’s a twist (not all in this form has a form of go go boots, some are barefoot or sandals). Something that when someone sees them in the transformation, they go “obviously this fairy is <insert race here>”.
As always, if you have questions, I am happy to answer.
I present to you
A WIP
But it shows another aspect of my AU
So the sketch is Flora in an outfit. And the inspiration of this outfit was based on Selena Quintanilla
This one in particular. Though there is some changes to it. One not seen here is the color.
Fun fact: Venus is heavily inspired by Selena along with Audrey Hepburn. And I mean more than just outfits and looks.
My train of thought is that because my AU’s Flora starts off as poor and gets thrusted into a royal position. Some habits never leave. The biggest one is hand me downs. I see Venus’s wardrobe before her royal era as wearing her mom’s old clothing or some clothing that her community handed her when their daughters outgrew them. Or making them herself.
Flora I feel would do the same thing. One to be closer to her family (because they aren’t around for long) and because “commoner clothing” feels right for her. She is constantly reminded that she wasn’t born royal and to be honest, she really wished it stayed that way.
A huge headcanon I have for my AU is that she did make a huge fuss about leaving Lynphea to go to Alfea and only did so with the promise that she would go under an alias instead of a title. (I also want to note that I see Northern Lynphea, where she comes from, as super private and having literally no technology. She was also shielded from the public eye for a long time. Everyone knows her name as a royal but no one really knows what she looks like).
While she is known as Princess Florance Paloma Guerrero Del Bosque, Crowned Princess of Lynphea, at Alfea she is simply known as Flora Del Bosque, a commoners name.
(It’s not a secret for long but I digress)
Back to the sketch, that is actually her outfit but it was inspired by one created for her sister. Sort of a homage or tribute. Miele when she comes of age, also dons outfits that pay homage to the siblings she barely got to meet.
The sketch also kinda shows off Flora and really the average build of a Lynphean woman (average - not the whole consensus because everyone is different) which is inspired by Selena’s body shape.
When I was developing the Winx for this AU, I wanted every girl to be unique in their body type. Flora is a little on the thicker side but I like to think it’s more muscle. Her body is inspired by Selena Quintanilla also. In my AU, she is a little more active. She dances (fun fact: she used to do it competitively) but mainly the type that involves a partner (couples dance, ballroom mainly). I also highly headcanon that she loves to climb trees (like most northern Lynpheans) and is very good and very fast at it. She also knows combat but it’s more of a “it was forced” thing for her because of her title. She would rather not know how to.
Also she does something that I like to call rage gardening. She’s not one to take her anger out on someone so when she’s gardening, she’s rougher than usual. She doesn’t mean to be, just mostly out of anger. I do have a storyline that involves her creating a community garden on the outskirts of Magic City from scratch. She’s solo at first but does have help later (friends and the Lynphean community of Magix City). There are plenty of times where she gets so frustrated that she’s really gardening and everyone knows not to fuck with her.
Another fun fact: I view Magix City as New York City where it is a blend of cultures. Though in Magix City, they are known as the Lynphean - Magi. In reference to Mexican-American, Italian-American, Irish-American, you get the picture.
That is all I have now. Honestly, it’s a lot of info dumping about my AU to stop me from info dumping about Selena (which is hard at times).
As always, you have questions, I will answer.
Guys…
First off I think I found a style I am satisfied with.
Second:
Official looks at Venus and Flora along with an official color scheme for Venus. Her palette is a lot like Flora’s, there is a reason for that. Just like there is a reason they both look like Taima.
The only difference between the two siblings along with the mother is the eyes. Venus has her Dad, Silvio’s, eyes. Flora and Taima both have olive green eyes.
So to go into it a little more.
Taima is a major political figure in the Magic Dimension. She was before and after she became royalty.
Note: I wouldn’t say a huge one that everyone in the Magic Dimension. But in a part, such as Lynphea (of course), Erakleon, Solaria, Andros, and any other realm that has a history with Lynphea. And that history isn’t always a great one.
Since I have Lynphea as a matriarchal society, the eldest daughter is promised the throne instead of the son (unless there is no daughter). So Venus being the oldest daughter would be next in line. And her looking exactly like her mom is a problem when they want you to be like her.
The problem being Venus is a little too much like her mother…when she was younger. Taima used to be very vengeful and angry, the kind to be like “you hurt me now I will obliterate you.” Since getting older and having the responsibility of her people (as a rebel leader) and children (as a mother), she became more responsible and realizing some sacrifices had to be made.
And that higher society expected her to be a certain because she is indigenous to the realm and “not like them”.
Venus slowly realizes too. Slowly. Until it’s too late and she’s gone.
Now with her gone and her mother not being present (physically but not spuritually but not dead), Flora looking like both is a huge problem since she has two shadows to be thrown in. Plus people who see them in her features, they look at her a certain way that she really doesn’t like. (If she had a nickel for every time they say “you look just like…”). Plus the expectation thrusted on her at a young age.
I do have some posts I have geared up about my AU’s Lynphea and their society, culture, people, history, etc. so imma let it there. As always if you have questions or insight, feel free to ask. I’m always happy to answer questions.
Here are some doodles I’ve worked on this weekend. I try to step away from digital and keep my foot in the traditional mediums from time to time. Especially when things get frustrating for me.
So I’ve hinted that I have some of my own next gen characters of the Winx characters. These are purely indulgent.
The first one (colored sketch) is Timmy and Texan’s one and only child. Her name is Paige. I have a “main cast” of my next gen which mainly contain the elder children. She is not a part of this cast but is one of the older youngins (if you catch my drift) she does have more appearances than a lot of the youngins so…
Any way, I see her as excitable, eccentric (shown here with her green dyed hair), and will “do the funniest thing” when the opportunity strikes. She pretty chill and loves to share her new discoveries, especially video games. Which she is a wiz at.
You all have met Falene before, through my art journey. I don’t think I talk about her much. I like the trope of the children being the opposite of their parents.
Falene is one of them.
She is the daughter of Flora and Helia, their only child. She’s a little shit stirrer, mainly grouchy and irritable (which is why her expressions are more on the aggressive end). Her uncles are pretty sure she is the physical manifestation of all the anger her parents had held back. She’s the kind to fight things out with her fists than with her words but she’s slowly learning with therapy.
She has bipolar II disorder which explains a lot about her. That was something I debated on but since I myself have it and would love to see more representation that’s not a stereo type, I went ahead with it. There is a lot of sexuality and mental health components to the next gen story along with my AU with their parents.
Everything Everywhere All At Once ft. Winx Club
Commission by @zibukoshi
This is a very rough wip but I wanted to try and update so I can keep up with the activity.
This is another concept I have for Lynpheans. This is Taima with baby Flora (I know the hair looks off but I’m mapping before I draw and fail her curls). This is based of some indigenous cultures where they have clothing to wear everyday that also doubles as something to carry their children. Lynphean women know no rest. They literally can’t stay still. Even just after they give birth. So where they go, so does the child. Literally, the child never leaves their sight or person.
Besides Lynphea is a matriarch society, they have important shit to do.
I have a lot of headcanons. Some indulgent. Some not so much.
One such headcanon is that Flora is notorious in the group for trying to befriend any animal she comes across. And in some cases, she tries to bring them home. Because of that, on her home realm, she has plenty of “pets”. “Pets” because she doesn’t consider them to be pets because of her upbringing.
One such pet that she made that she got to keep
Is Ganso…
So his story started near the beginning of Season 2 as a stray egg Brandon found on the outskirts of Red Fountain property. He believed it to be a dud egg and was going to cook and eat it. Because protein… Flora, who was with him and some of the others in their group, stopped him because she felt life inside it. Brandon was not amused but he has a hard time telling her no when she’s close to tears. So he gave her a week to care for it and hatch it. If not, it will be his lunch.
It didn’t hatch…until the very last second.
And he immediately imprinted on Flora.
Flora loves him dearly and Ganso adores the shit out of Flora. He will do anything to protect his stand in mother.
Thing is: he only likes Flora
To everyone else, he’s a total menace. In fact, he is notoriously known as “The Menace of Red Fountain”. His favorite pastime is hissing, chasing, honking, biting, attacking every poor soul that crosses his path. And everyone beside Flora fears him. Even the dragons, who he shares the stables with, do.
But he hates no one more than Brandon. The goose will go out of his way to make Brandon’s day miserable. He’s always there, hissing around every corner at him. Flora thinks it’s because he wanted to eat him and Ganso remembers from inside the shell
Brandon thinks that’s bullshit but still sleeps with one eye open.
Ganso is Spanish for goose because I feel that is Flora’s naming system. And also, I was gonna name him goose in Nahuatl but a lot of my research was kinda contradictory and I didn’t want to cross a line.
He is modeled after the Orinoco Goose. Which I found out is one of the only species of wild geese located in South America.
He’s gotta be flashy to have the audacity of a much bigger creature.
And you may be asking why Cordatorta allowed him to stay in the stables of Red Fountain. He was hoping the dragons would eat him. He was briefly disappointed when they did nothing but cower from the goose. But he earned brownie points by always keeping the boys on their toes.
Two little fun facts:
When the Winx and Specialists go camping in the wilds, near the middle/end of season two. In my AU, he comes along because he could. They do end up losing him in the beginning of fighting the Trix. Flora was very upset when they were gonna leave without him. Everyone else was not. But the fucker ended up showing at the last minute and going home with him.
He was also supposed to stay until the end of Flora’s second year. He was to go home with her to Lynphea. But Saladin allowed her to keep him there until she graduated at the end of her third year (because in my AU, fairies at Alfea only have three years then they graduate).
Everyone hated that.
A sneak peek that I hopefully finish. I’m excited and scared to see how this turns out. But again, it’s my boy, Bast. I’ve had an obsession with him lately.
Also I took a class on capturing likeness, can you tell?
Hello, I’m back. I have more lore and much updated drawings. I took some drawing classes and I see improvement. So I decided to redo Flora’s adopted brother, Bastian aka Bast.
So, a recap, Bastian isn’t Flora’s biological brother. He was adopted. He is a Sand Nomad or a group of Lynpheans that lives in the desert region of Lynphea.
(Note: In my AU, there are different biomes in Lynphea. I also have Lynphea as two regions, North and South. Krystal’s family rules Southern Lynphea and Flora’s, because this is a “what if she was a royal”, is the north. I can go into more detail on the differences between the two in another post. I’m talking biome, people, culture, etc.)
He was orphaned when very young. His tribe/family (still under cut) were slaughtered in front of him. Taima and Silvio took him in.
He’s very angsty and is hell bent on revenge. He is also the most serious and focused out of the older three siblings (the others being Venus and Casander “Cas”). He’s also irritable a lot. But his siblings also know how to push his buttons. Mostly Venus.
He barely tolerates most people. Flora is the only one that he feels worthy of his affection. She is always in his sight and he would protect her at all costs.
Yes, would. He doesn’t live long. Neither does Venus and Cas. That’s lore to get into later though.
His design had some changes through the years. His appearance is based on Indigenous North Americans. His palette is on the darker end than the rest of the family except for his eyes that are a striking purple.
(In my AU, Flora and Riven do become close friends. No reason.)
His appearance is also based off of Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender. His slim face, angular eyes, and (not pictured) his body shape. He’s built like a greyhound - lithe.
His power is also fire. Which there is a reason I have it as this but I’ll elaborate later.
Any questions? Feel free to ask. But for now, I sleep.
So I realized I never shared a Taima doodle or showed how I picture her. Have a set of Taima and Silvio, my AU’s Flora’s parents, when they were younger. Probably before or around the time they knew each other.
Now I shared a doodle of how I saw Silvio. I wanted to draw him again as my style is evolving. Although I accidentally made him younger. Which led to this. So I had to include the very love of his life. Also this was a shading practice as I am not that great at it.
Taima’s hair is proof.
But I’m learning…
His hair may look familiar. I said that there will be some elements from the Nickelodeon eras that I would incorporate. I took inspiration from Flora’s Bloomix (I believe it’s called) hairstyle.
Can we also appreciate how much of a pretty boy Silvio was and maybe is (that’s for you to decide).
Also his skin color needs to be a little bit darker. Whoops!
Some more world building for you. My reimagining of the Winx world is more fantasy based. There will be times that the girls fight without transforming. I like to think that they transform when shit is getting real. (Or for overkill because they misjudged the opponent). Something to do with when they are transformed, they are at their most powerful and most vulnerable. This might be ret conned though.
Now, I mentioned before that I see dancing very ingrained in Lynphean culture. Some of them are very traditional and teach/learn the dances of their ancestors that celebrates and honors nature and helps them be in tune with it.
Flora’s family is a very diverse bunch. Her father, Silvio (an oc I created) is a very good musician. Has a beautiful voice. Taima (her mother, another oc) loves and knows a variety of dances. Venus (her older sister and yes yet another oc of mine) is a performer. She’s talented in both. Flora wanted to feel connected to her older sister so she took up dancing besides the traditional dances they teach the younger ones. I also like to believe that she took up ballroom dancing because of the discipline involved in it. She’s not very good at freestyling or coming up with something on the spot (yet, there is growth). Miele I headcanon as becoming somewhat of a performer when she’s in her teens (an homage to her eldest sister).
I also want to incorporate each Winx member throwing spells in their style instead of the simple wave of the hand. Like Musa and Layla incorporating dance. Stella striking a pose from time to time. Tecna at some points being in a make shift simulator created by her magic. (Bloom I’m still thinking of but all I can come up with is her facing her opponent head on like a juggernaut. Can be changed later on as I give it more thought). I also want it to reflect the culture of their realms like Zenithians letting technology and magic take care of the job.
Flora being a Lynphean who has a deep tradition of performing dances that represent and honor nature herself, incorporates these moves (whether traditional or the ballroom dances she was taught). This goes the same with Androsians and Solarians (and other primordial realms) but I put in the category of how spiritually connected they are with their magical element. Flora is constantly interacting with the nature spirits of Lynphea (there are many but there is also the amalgamation of nature herself. A sort of goddess. I’m a magic practitioner. It goes along with what I experience/learned. If you guys want a crash course of what I came up so far with for Lynphean beliefs, I can do that sometime) and really the spirits of anyplace she is. Mostly the nature spirits though. (I got myself off track but each girl is at a different spiritual level with their magical element. I can also explain that in another post.)
Back to my point, incorporating these moves helps her move in harmony with her magic and the nature around her and honestly makes it stronger. (Note to make: she doesn’t start off like this when she’s younger but learns to and feels the stronger connection. It feels right is what I’m getting at. Moving on.)
I also want to bring in a point here that I feel that most, not every fairy has a sub element that’s not as strong but goes along with their main magical element (Stella is mainly solar but she later ends up tapping into her lunar element, Layla is mainly water but does have magic over morphix I think it’s called). Flora’s is actually wind or air. This comes from some scenes where she is seen creating air currents when using her magic. And also all her siblings (except Bast whose adopted) have some sort of air magic because their father Silvio has air magic ( I know I said this a lot already but I can make a separate post about this too).
<I hope I explained most that right. If not, let me know if something is confusing and I can try to explain better. I have chronic migraines and with it comes transient aphasia. When paired with my ADHD, it makes it hard to articulate what I mean and stay on track.>
But the rough sketches above are some of the poses or moves that I would see Flora (and Venus) making while using her magic while not transformed. So a lot of these involve a long skirt. Not only do I see her wardrobe mainly involving long skirts, it also helps her move and create air drafts that she can throw. The movement of the skirt creates air movement that she can grab magically and use. Thats where my brain goes.
(Another note: She doesn’t get in touch with her wind/air magic until much later. I’m looking season two or later. She eventually does by mimicking her older sister’s movements and her dad to a lesser extent. Again can make another post).
So the dances I looked at were Latin/South/Central American dances. The main one was the Cumbia (Selena Quintanilla was a huge inspiration for Venus and Miele’s development. Mainly Venus. I believe she danced the Mexican Cumbia but I could be wrong. Correct me if I am). There is some Flamenco inspiration. And Mexican Folklorico (that’s what I heard it was called. Again correct me if I’m wrong and there is a different name).
I believe that’s all I have to say. It’s late and my brain is tired. Sorry if this is just a bunch of nonsensical rambling. If you are confused, I can try to clear things up. I’m going to sleep.
So during the time I was catching up on my Winx Club lore after rekindling my interest in it, I read somewhere (can’t remember where, it’s been some time since I’ve seen it) that there are theories of Lynphea being a matriarchal society…
You guys do not know how wildly I have been running with this theory.
I’ve been working on expression. Here’s a sketchy sketch.
This is Falene. You’ve met her a few times if you followed my other account. She’s Flora and Helia’s one and only child. She smells some bullshittery about.
I think I’m coming closer to finding a style that I’m both happy with and find enjoyable to draw.
