On the Crystal Methyd/Get Dusted Confederate Flag issue

I rarely post my own writings/posts on tumblr, because this has just become a sort of safe space for me to reblog things that make me happy or make me learn.

However, as an “ex 14 year old fandom girl” I HAVE to address this situation with Crystal Methyd and the Get Dusted Girls. Many current 14(ish) year old “drag race stans” on twitter and tumblr are currently “cancelling” Crystal and demanding her “apology” for the picture above.

Now, I am not american but I am familiar with the Confederate Flag and how it represents racism and white supremacy. I do not stand by any of those vile symbols and thus, I am completely against people using the confederate flag as a symbol of pride.

However, the photo above CLEARY is a satirization and condemnation of the flag and what it stands for. Drag, in many of its forms, is satire. And drag is activism. And activism is often expressed through satire. The Get Dusted Girls are from Missouri, a red state where rednecks and people who use the confederate flag live. This, as the girls have explained, was an event in which they mocked and condemned people like that: racists and white supremacists. Crystal is latinx and Daegan is a trans woman who have voiced their anti-Trump, anti-racism opinions MULTIPLE times. Anyone with two brain cells would realize this.

Also, it is extremely interesting how these “stans” are choosing to ignore the multiple instances of activism, support of pro-human rights movements and good actions these girls have done. How they have gone, in drag in the MIDDLE OF MISSOURI, to BLM protests (not just this year but many years ago). How they are actively anti-racist and are using their platforms for good. But when you find this picture, which is CLEARLY satire and NOT supporting the confederate flag, you immediately “cancel” them and “demand” an apology. Phew.

This “anger” at the picture seems like performative activism in many cases. These people be like: “omg I’m SHATTERED, she was my FAVE :( i need to use my platform for good! ...GO HIT THE REBLOG BUTTON :D”. This cases, imo, are simply so called “fans” being performative and attempting to “save their faves”.

And most of the people tweeting are young white folks with a “savior” complex. Some poc fans have voiced that they feel uncomfortable with them trying to be offended on their behalf and they speaking over them. And the fact that these people are so entitled demanding an apology: “you better adress this...fast” “mom im so SHATTERED! I’m unfollowing you!” You are mad because Crystal is blocking “fans” who are “telling her to apologize.” These “fans” are people who are harrasing her to say sorry for a joke performance that was made to CONDEMN the people who support the flag.

Satire is NOT and endorsement. Call me when they are supporting, endorsing and taking pride on this flag for REAL.

What do these kids want? A gold star for being “WOKE”? Sign a petition, go to a protest, do something for your community, support POC celebrities. Do something TRULY good. Do not go digging for bad things to “cancel” people when they truly have not done anything wrong (and ask for reblogs and retweets for your “woke action”...LOL)

I’m 23 years old. Men old enough to be my father hit on me all the time.

At work a couple months ago, a man in his 50s came up to me and started telling me about how he saw me a few days ago and grossly explaining how fine he thought I was. He didn’t want to fuck off when I told him he was being inappropriate, he instead asked for my number. On another occasion at work, another man around the same age asked me if I need a sugar daddy. When I am at work, I am not acting like I’m in my 50s, I am minding my own business and doing my job.

Just yesterday while I was out jogging, a man in his 30s leaned out of his truck window to yell at me. When I am out jogging or walking, I am not acting like I’m in my 30s, or trying to attract the attention of men in their 30s, I am exercising.

When I was 19, a man in his 40s followed me across a shopping center while I bought art supplies for school between classes. He followed me, caught up to me, and asked me my age, and even upon hearing that I was decades younger than him, and a TEENAGER, he persisted and kept trying to give me his number to make plans with him. I wasn’t acting like I was 40, I was shopping for school supplies.

When I was 16, I was at the laundromat Waiting for my clothes to finish, and a man in his mid 20s/30s came up to me, into my personal space, and started hitting on me. When I told him I was only 16, he just asked me “so when do you turn 18?” And getting frustrated at my obvious discomfort. I was doing laundry, not vying for a grown man’s attention.

One thing all these older men have in common when they start bothering me, is that they start off with “you look kinda young, but…”. We as a society need to stop shifting the blame onto young women and girls. Very many men are predatory and purposely go for girls that are much younger than them for sick reasons. It has nothing to do with “acting your age”. If a 20-something y/o is going after girls in their mid teens, he is a creep and a predator. There’s no way around that. Creepy men need to be held accountable for their fucked up behavior.
