About Me

One half of the founders of the new event Poetry+, Showrunner at To Be Frank poetry and one fifth of the team which placed second in Unislam 2018, Rose Butler has been performing since the end of 2016, and has now performed at Bath Spa Pride, Bristol Harbour Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as taking part in various film projects. They write about all angles of love, gender and generational issues, and are described by their peers as "nice" and "needs to stop writing about stars".

As a photographer, Rose Butler has a unique eye for light and detail, as well as a talent for capturing candid moments. Specialising in portrait and event photography, they are versatile, easy-going, and easy to work with.

Did a shoot with my best buddy a few weeks ago! Really loved the lighting on location (although golden hour faded a lot faster than I would’ve liked, so we made do with a streetlamp)

How do you kill a God?

Aphrodite laughs, head tossed back with stars in her hair, ‘We are immortal. We are ageless. We will never die.’ 

How do you kill a God?

Hera sighs, ‘You rob them of love and loyalty. They will be alone and unhappy, and eternity will seem like a punishment, but it is not death.’ 

How do you kill a God?

Zeus declares, rather confidently, ‘You deny them their power. Poseidon nods his head in agreement. ‘They will be weak and defeated, perhaps even chopped up into pieces, but it is not death.’

Apollo closes his eyes. ‘You strip them of their senses. Their eyes, and they cease to see. Their ears, and they are rendered silent. They will be in the dark, conscious and cut off for millennium, but it is not death.’

Hades whispers, though still his voice carries, ‘With another God. An immortal for an immortal. Era for an Era. A celestial being to strip another’s soul. He pauses, the rest are silent. ‘A God for a God.’

LET ME TELL Y’ALL ABOUT THIS WRITING APP

Fighter’s Block is the best writing app I’ve come across in a long time.

You type in the amount of words you want to write and as you write, your mini lil avatar fights a monster. Each word you write acts a hit towards your monster, and once you’ve hit your word count the monster is defeated!!!

How cute!!!!

Work quick though as how long you spent not writing decreases your avatar’s health. It’s a productive fight to the death against the clock!

Best things about this app:

You can PAUSE it!!!! Need go get a cup of tea? Need to sneeze? You can!!!!!

Settings are adjustable! You can change the monster’s speed and the attacks!

You can change the theme and font!

You can level up!!!!! The number of words you write equals your EXP. You can unlock one avatar thus far, but I believe there may be more in the future!

You can minimise the fight above if it serves as a distraction, and only show the decreasing green bar.

Best of all: If you don’t hit the target word count in time, YOUR WORK DOES NOT DISAPPEAR. In the past I’ve lost so much work because I wasn’t typing fast enough, or sneezed.I cannot express enough how thankful I am that it presents a challenge where the consequence is a knock of pride and not a fit of rage.

Honestly, I urge all writers out there to give this app a go. It’s my new favourite thing.

I feel like when you’re writing, organizing chapters and dialogue is easy

but jfc, the amount of time it takes to constantly keep people moving and make sure they’re in the right spaces and trying to come up with wording for it is always such a shock. 

Like, fuck, I made you pick up a coffee cup, you need to put it down at some point. also I can’t remember what I dressed you in, can you push up your sleeves? I don’t remember if you even have your shirt on.

and YOU. YOU OVER THERE, you got out of your chair earlier, but did you come back yet? Are you coming back? Where did you even go and why’d you get up? Fuck, I can’t make you sit down again already, you just stood up, go…over there. go get more coffee. Ok but hear me out: What we really need is a Harry Potter TV show. Season 1 will be all about the founders, their youth, how they met each other how they founded Hogwarts and the drama with Salazar Slytherin. Season 2 will be loads of additional characters during the first centuries of the school and just a lot of regular Hogwarts stuff BECAUSE WE ALL WANT MORE OF THAT. AND THEN Season 3 will show all of our favourite professors attending Hogwarts and give us loads of information about their backgrounds and THEN FINALLY IN Season 4 we will move on to THE MARAUDERS AGE. Young James. Young Sirius. Young Remus. Young Peter. Young Lily. Young everyone-we-love. Just. Imagine.

Honestly though, this all sounds so good! But since there’s not much of a chance they’ll do this, can you imagine a blog with rp threads instead of episodes for all of this? Like, a blog with all of these seasons and whatnot (we could even add a few seasons!) except it’s all made in gifs instead and there are a few videos as well. Ooh, and bloopers videos every now and then! Okay, before I start blabbering on about all of this, would anyone want to join? Because I don’t think I’d ever even try to do something this big alone. Would anyone even want to see something like this?

You could do a season with all the marauders parents aswell! Think of watching Fleamont potter creating the potion that made him rich or how the Blacks were treated that made them who they were! The way the Lupins got together! LITERALLY ANYTHING ON PETER’S PARENTS!?!

Ok my dudes, listen up.

The year that ruined everything is over. It is finally dead and we can bury it. But just because it’s gone doesn’t mean it can be forgotten - it’s left behind more than its fair share of shit to clear up. 

Which is why we need to buck up. We need to make 2017 the year we fixed everything, and had a bloody good time doing it. We need to be prepared to fight it tooth and nail, to beat it with our bare fucking hands until it does what we want. We have to be prepared to stand up and fight every stupid fascist, racist, sexist, homophobic idea that crosses our path and send it packing. We’re due a good year, but it won’t come if we don’t fight for it. We can’t expect it - fate, provenance, whatever - to do all the work for us. We need to face off against all of the shit brexit trump that’s carrying over from last year. 

I’m no good at writing calls to arms, but I felt that I had to say something. tl;dr we need to make this year our bitch, and maybe put aside some of our differences where we need to to make it happen

Snapshots

I have started collecting snapshots

Not photographs, but memories

Concrete memories of specific moments that I don’t want to forget

Moments which to an outsider may seem insignificant

But to me…

God only knows what I would be if I forgot how warm I felt inside

When you kissed me spontaneously just because you were happy

Even though it had nothing to do with me.

The first time you called me “babe” in public

“See you later babe” (waving)

I smiled all the way back to my room

And when I reached my seminar I was still smiling.

I don’t want to forget how it feels to just… cuddle

With you, lying in the same bed

Head on your chest

Both nervous and excited because we’re trying something new

And it might be catastrophic

But it also might be amazing

And feel comfortable.

And we might only last a week, or a month, or three months

Or a year or until we graduate or the rest of our lives

(not to put any pressure on it or anything)

But I never want to forget our friends’ reactions

How happy they have been for us, each and every time we let slip our little, newborn secret

Because I do not remember the last time someone was that happy for me

And if this doesn’t last as long as I’d like

Then I want to remember these little, pathetic things.

Because for so long I have felt that I am just an echo

But now I finally have the chance to speak.
