Random thought of the day:

People who ignore everything a story or fandom lore says just because they decided one day that a certain character is "stupid" or "annoying" or what have you, usually based on first impressions.

Are they just ignorant or is it a "rebellion" thing? Like, everybody likes this character, so they dislike them on principle? Or both? Or is it a matter of lacking empathy?

I've seen it so many times and I really don't get it.

Last time I witnessed this was in my Final Fantasy VIII Remaster stream where my viewer called Squall an edgelord. Because of course he is, he wears a leatherjacket with fur and leather pants with two belts and I was like...?? Do you even know what "edgy" means? Have we played the same game? Squall is the exact opposite of that, really.

I usually chalk that up to personal blind spots.

For example, in one of my current fandoms, there’s a princess who fights the church, and I would bet a non-zero sum of money that at least half of her stans (namely the ones who like her because “she’s a lesbian taking down the evil church what’s not to love?”) are coming from a place of personal, religious trauma that gives them blind spots where churches are concerned, because:

The princess is canonically bi, not lesbian.

The goddess worshipped by said church is also canonically bi, and so is the archbishop at the top of the church, and so are two of her best knights, one of whom is openly simping for the archbishop.

There is not a single line/implication in the actual game text anywhere about the church being homophobic.

Most of the evil stuff that gets credited to the church is revealed to be a combined result of humanity simply being its usual dickish self, the survivors of a genocide covering up their own history so humanity won’t try to use their body parts for weaponry AGAIN, and a 1000-year-long game of telephone that’s been co-opted by an ancient terrorist cult.

But personal blind spots can make people ignore a lot of shit, no matter how rational or otherwise great at media analysis the person is. For a RL expert example, see Gavin de Becker, author of the 95% amazing book “The Gift of Fear”--the 5% that are decidedly not amazing is the chapter on domestic abuse where it becomes clear that he, being a DA survivor, is massively biased.

And for the record, it’s not a moral failing to have blind spots, but you ought to learn how to recognize them for what they are at some point and look at what the text is *actually* saying. At least if you wanna talk meta. If it’s just fanfic, you do you, and also block and mute buttons are great and healthy, and filters are the best thing to happen to the internet since cat videos.

The funny part of all this conversation is that in Record Keeper Squall have a sword that is made with Shiva's design, even her face can be seem in the sword. And some Soul Breaks for Quistis she uses Card.

So I guess even for Square that Junction is canon 🤣

Well, she is the first GF you get (together with Quezacotl) und unlike Q, Shiva has a STR junction, which is much more useful for Squall than for Quistis (likewise, Q’s magic junction is much more useful for Quistis).

That said, there is also a certain narrative consistency here of Squall getting the aloof but stunning ice queen while Quistis get’s the GF that learns the most OP ability in the game (Card Mod).

And then of course everyone junctions Ifrit to Zell, because that joke just writes itself.

All true. :) Doesn't mean it has to stay that way forever in the game. But I also always junction the "Starter Pokémon" the same way (Squall = Shiva, Zell = Ifrit, Quistis/Selphie/Rinoa = Queza), although I've gotten the feeling that a lot of people also consider Queza and Zell being a good fit. Purely based on the energy thing. Which I like the idea but for me it's always gonna be the above mentioned setup. :)
