“Avery, help your aging, change-is-frightening dad with your insight. Am I ‘woke’ if a) I acknowledge climate control is a thing or b) if I acknowledge eating tide pods is a big fat… yes? Or is it a no? What will make daddy the wokest in the shortest amount of time?” 

He gives her dad a look, scrunching her nose a little. “The Tide Pod thing was last year dad, but climate control is real, like... the planet is kinda start to burn up.” she then rolls her eyes. “You’re so weird dad.” Avery shoves her dad a little and chuckles.

“Knock knock. It’s your daily dose of paternal affection and nosey involvement in your life.” 

The rad part about having twins was you could annoy one and still have a backup. 

Wade moves away from leaning on Niles’s doorway, approaching him to sit on the bed. Niles appears to be fiddling with a gadget. All that stuff escapes Wade but anything that holds his kids’ attention and isn’t Fortnite is fine by him.

The mercenary has to smile. They were so different and so self assured. It astounded Wade - and made him really proud for some fucking reason he couldn’t put his finger on. He’d never felt that secure as a kid. They were doing something right as parents. 

Now, the twins could still fight like cats and dogs but that was fitting seeing as that’s how he and Archer had hit it off.  “What’cha working on there, kiddo?”

Niles blinks a bit and looks up from his device to look at his dad with almost a flat expression. “Sometimes I wonder if your weirdness is gonna make me impervious to literally everything or cost me a lot of money in therapy.” he mutters. Most 13 year olds didn’t talk like Avery and Niles, but most 13 year olds didn’t have parents like theirs.

But Avery was unbelievably bright, so it made sense he’d talk like he was older. When Wade sits on his bed he sets it aside and looks at his dad. “Mm nothing really, just downloaded a free mobile app developer program and just kinda messing around with it...” he shrugs. “I honestly have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m just watching some youtube videos on how to use the program.” he smiles.

“Once I get the hang of it I’ll probably make something... not sure what yet.” he nods a little.

“Daaaaaad....” they whine, almost a little angrily; much in that way Archer did when he was irate. Avery keeps trying to push at their dad, even if they know it’s a practice in futility, as Mom is the only person who can seriously make Dad move whether he wants to or not.

Avery pulls back and sniffles as they look up at their dad, frown deep set on their lips. “I don’t....” they whimper a bit. “I can do this on my own!” No they can’t. “You don’t have to stay here.” Yes he does. “I’m not a little kid.” Yes they are. Avery stamps their foot before folding their arms and bouncing a bit. They were sort of hitting that ‘I’m grown up, independent, and don’t need my mom and dad’ phase, but truth be told Avery was very attached to her parents... and got made fun of for it.

"Happy Father's Day!" the twins yell happily, Niles holding a small cake and Avery holding a card. [ themancylegacies ]

Father’s Day was never a big deal in the Wilson household. When his mother was alive they’d make a halfhearted attempt if his dad was sober enough but it was more for show than actual gratitude. After his dad was gone, Wade just stopped caring about the day, having no attachment to it. There was nothing bad or good about it - it was just another day. 

That’s all changed. His heart is so full. It’s overflowing. When he got together with Archer he was under the impression he couldn’t love another being just as completely, just as intensely as he did the other. And then the twins had been born. 

“I see you’re both vying for top spot on the leaderboard.” He smiles and pulls the twins to him, kissing each of their foreheads once they’re nestled against him. “Thank you, babies. I love being your dad.”  

He turns his attention to the cake, resting his cheek against the top of Niles’s head. His fingers lightly play over the back of Avery’s neck. “This cake must have the world’s tiniest stripper inside of it.”

He smiles when she does, placing another kiss to her temple. “That’s sweet, baby. Thank you.” He’s never thought of himself as a hero - but if he can be a hero to her, he’ll choose the profession every time. 

Wade notes the way Avery subdues herself, turning his body fully so he’s facing her. And, for once, he’s quiet. Because he’s perceptive enough to tell when something is bothering his children. Or his boyfriend. He’s more perceptive than he lets on for a reason. 

Avery’s admission makes him nod his head and rest his hand on her knee, rubbing his thumb over the cap. “Tell me more.” 

She meant it. To her, her parents were heroes. They were her heroes. And not just because sometimes they helped people. They helped her. They were there for her, and yeah that’s what parents were supposed to do, but it was the way they did it. They didn’t talk to her like she was a kid, they talked to her like a person.

Avery knew her dad put on an act most of the time, hell the whole family knew, but they let him have it. They all had their ‘things’ and they all let each other have them.

At the hand on her knee she looks up at her dad. “Well... sometimes I feel like a boy.” she shrugs before she looks down again, fiddling with the hem of her shirt. “I like... I mean... I know mom is different, but that’s just how he was born.” she shrugs. She knew about gender identities and all that, but when it came to yourself and it was no longer just information you were absorbing it changed things.

“Doesn’t look like nothing.” He watches her carefully as she sits on the counter, setting his phone down and turning to face her. 

She’s always been observant. Though, to be fair, Al could have picked up on the authenticity of his little family. “Oh, the weirdest. Target turned us away from a holiday ad because we were too diverse.” 

He grunts at Avery’s observation, clasping his hands together as he leans into the counter with his elbows. “I don’t know about heroes but we definitely don’t work a standard 9-5.” And neither do Archer’s parents, either. They’re a hodge podge of do-good/do-what-needs-to-be-done. The latter more so in his and Archer’s case. It’s a good chunk of why he loves the other. 

Wade angles his head to look at his daughter, letting his lips rest on her temple.  “Are you okay with all that? Being weird?” 

She actually giggles a bit at the mention of the Target ad and turns her head into his shoulder, nuzzling a bit before she pulls her head back a bit to look at him.

“Well I think you and mom are heroes.” she shrugs. “You’re my heroes.” she smiles brightly. 

When her dad poses the question, she seems to withdraw into herself a bit, thinking. “Well... if we’re a weird family, then that means I fit in just fine...” she murmurs. See, her mother’s identity was easier to nail down. Archer looked, sounded, and was mostly physically male, it wasn’t a ‘feeling’ or anything like that. 

“If we’re weird... then int his family I’m normal.” she chews her lip, looking at the floor. “Because recently... well..” she sighs. “I don’t always feel like... well... a girl.”

The twins begin to pick up and Wade only smiles, watching them fondly. Even in mundane tasks such as picking up after themselves, he can see a bit of himself and a bit of Archer in their mannerisms.  

He loves them so much it is painful. In the best kind of way. 

With his refereeing work done, he leaves their room to go to the kitchen and find his phone, sending Archer a text to touch base. 

Avery’s hovering presence tracks his attention and he turns to her with a smile, leaning his hips back against the counter. “What’s up, buttercup?” 

Avery walks over to her dad and hops up onto the counter and sits beside him. “Nothing.” she shrugs.

“We’re a weird family aren’t we?” she asks. Between her mother identifying as and looking like a man, and her dad being well... her dad, they were far from normal. “And I don’t mean bad... I just mean... weird.” she shrugs.

The girl leans over and places her chin on his shoulder, looking at him. “I mean like... you and mom are like heroes or something... so are Grandma Nat and Grandpa Clint.” she moves her jaw a bit.

He sighs deeply when his hands are taken, giving them each a squeeze. “I feel god in this messy, messy room tonight.” 

Wade smiles as Niles relents, dropping Avery a wink. “Actions are louder than words, my child. Go with god. Peace be with you. And you.” He releases their hands and presses a kiss to the tops of their heads. 

He corkscrews his finger at the floor, gesturing vaguely. “And pick up this room before your mom gets home. Or we’ll all be in trouble.”  

Both of the twins groan loudly when their dad starts in about god and what not. There was no religion in the house, so when their dad got ridiculous with it, it made them less than excited.

Niles gets this expression of ‘why me?’ at his father’s words, and he huffs at the kiss to the top of his head.

She sighs softly at the kiss to the top of her head, but huffs when he mentions picking up the room. She walks over to her side of the room to start picking things up, but not before giving a light shove to her brother’s shoulder.

Niles makes a small noise, shoving back a bit, but they end up looking at each other before and just smiling as they move about picking up their room together in silence. Once they finish, Niles moves back onto his bed with his laptop to continue working on something, but Avery once again seeks her father out.

“Dad, yes. The bible, son. For ritual’s and aesthetic’s sake. You know I don’t need it to recite by heart.” 

He waggles his fingers to emphasize them having to take his hands if they want to be over quickly, glancing at both of them. “Let us pray.”

God, he’s such a good dad. He won’t be surprised if he’s asked onto a morning talk show. Ellen would be peak but he’ll settle for anything. “And though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death - aka Lego pieces and various, deconstructed electronics - I shall…” He raises his brows at Avery, gesturing with his hand for her to continue the verse. “I shall…?” 

Niles knows damn well his dad is fell of shit on the whole bible front so he just stares him down. Though they know if they don’t take his hands, this is gonna last way longer than they want it to. He will drag it out.

So begrudgingly both twins take their father’s hands, but they both look in opposite directions, suffering through their father’s antics.

Once his dad stops to prompt his sister and before she can respond, he speaks up. “Okay okay!” he huffs out, “If I say I’m not gonna mess with Avery’s stuff anymore will you stop, please?”

Avery looks at her dad, then over at her twin, and back to her dad.

She can only pray this stops her dad from continuing.

“Oh, no. Especially when your mother does it. I lose my goddamn mind.” 

He smirks and joins Avery in the doorway, leaning into the frame with a shake of his head. “Bad news, son. You’re down to second place on the leaderboard.” 

Almost immediately the twins erupt into an argument  “Alright, alright! Timeout. Settle down, Stone Cold Steve Austin.” He places his hand on Avery’s shoulder and points at Niles. “That’s a yellow card for you.” 

Wade moves to stand in the middle of their room, holding one hand out to Niles and the other to Avery. “Come on. You both know what this means.” He inhales deeply as if they’re all about to do yoga together, craning his head from side to side so his neck muscles loosen up. “Nothing a little folk singing and prayer can’t fix. Get the bible, Niles.”

Niles literally just ignores what his dad has to say because frankly he’s annoyed with his sister. It was just a dumb charge cord, not the end of the damn world. "Maybe you should get that stick out of your ass Avery!” he snaps.

Avery was about to snap back but suddenly their dad is speaking loudly enough and she looks up at him, a scowl on her face.

Both twins watch as their father moves into the center of the room and immediately they both have this look on their face. A look of ‘why us?’ Which to be honest was a facial expression they both made a lot when they were left home alone with their dad.

“Dad, no.” Niles pretty much begs.

“Oh my god dad we’re not doing this.” Avery groans.

Well that was one way to dispel a fight between two kids.
