TheMeccaofRhymes Exclusive: BANNED Spotlight Artist MEGAN LEWIS

BLACK WOMEN, PERIOD! Through the power of social media, I scrolled through my Instagram feed as I would normally do throughout the day, to find an amazing mural of a bright, bold afro-centric black woman as the Statue of Libery. Holding a scroll reading "Know Thy Self". It's documented that black soldiers played a huge role in winning the Civil War, how dope would it have been to see a plan like this really come into fruition. Being that I am interested in the arts. I reposted the mural but felt guilty because I wanted to give the artist credit as I always do. Someone made a comment and pointed her out to me and thats when she was found.

Megan Lewis Megan Lewis grew up im Baltimore, Maryland in a middleclass family. She explains that she would always draw but her dad was the one to nourish it. "As far as drawing goes, I always would draw, but my dad nourished it and brought me art supplies and would tell me I was good lol" When asked what sets her apart from other artist, she simply says "Everyone has a story" which couldn't be more true. How did you come up with the Black Women LLC brand? Its BLK WOMEN PERIOD period read as BLK WOMEN. I literally asked myself what represents me? You work with various mediums, which one is your favorite? I started off only using oils then came digital like ( photoshop, illustrator and what not ) I didn't start using acrylics until I started painting murals two years ago. Now I don't even use oil anymore its just acrylic and digital work. but to answer ur question i'm going to cheat and say digital lol Being that she's done many murals throughout the city I wondered if it was possible to choose a favorite. Do you have a favorite mural of yours? All of them mean something me, but the one at Shake N Bake is my favorite because for one, yo!! I get to say that I have mural at Shake N Bake! My parents to go there and shake, took me when was young. As far as the image goes the illustration of the BLK WOMEN is so chile, people over look her a little. I did that on purpose. all my other the image of BLK WOMEN she was " performing" in this one she is just listening to music, she is just existing... images like that is important too. Who/What are your inspirations and what motivates you? Ernie Barnes is my favorite artist of all time, his work/style inspired me all the time. Many people judge Baltimore on its negative things. I've read that you help to provide the youth with opportunities to express themselves through art. How do you plan to continue to show the youth encouraging ways to stay positive and motivated even after the murals are competed? The summer program that I do murals with kids is called the art@work program and thats through Jubilee Arts and Bopa. During the time I'm with them I try and let who I am rub off on them as much as I can... I'm in their ear about history and what I feel is important that others might not be teaching them..... Some take it with them and some don't. What would you like to accomplish with your artwork? Paint the city with blk women images all over it Is there any advice you would give to other artist?
