A faint breeze stirred the air on the restaurant’s terrace, carrying the first whisper of something restless, something strange. The sky above Manosque, still kissed by the setting sun, bore a subtle shift. A smudge of gray clouds gathering on the horizon, their edges tinged with a quiet threat. The warmth that had lingered over the early evening seemed to thin, as though someone had quietly opened a door somewhere unseen. Katherine’s vampire senses prickled, probably due to changing air pressure, catching the shift before her eyes did. She glanced at the roses and lavender centerpiece, their vibrant petals curling inward, browning at the tips, and dropping in a soft cascade of decay. In mere moments, the delicate roses and lavender bouquets had wilted, their vibrant colors fading into sickly yellows and browns. The sweet floral scent soured into a damp, earthy tang, and this time, it wasn’t just her who noticed. A murmur rippled through the terrace as guests paused, their forks hovering, eyes darting to the wilting bouquets that adorned every table.
“What’s wrong with the flowers?” a woman at the next table whispered, her voice laced with unease. Her companion leaned forward, touching a drooping rose, only to flinch as it crumbled to dust beneath his fingertips. The wisteria vines along the railings shivered, shedding blackened leaves in a slow, unsettling drift, and the chatter grew louder; a mix of confusion and nervous laughter. A man two tables over stood, squinting at the centerpiece as if it might explain itself.
Another man furrowed his brow and glanced at the staff. “Are… are the flowers dead?” he asked quietly, as if afraid the plants might overhear. A woman by the railing shook her head in mild disbelief, exhaling softly, “I’ve never seen anything like this… maybe they were already dying?” The waiter hurried over, brushing his hands over the tablecloth nervously. “I...I assure you, madam, the flowers were fresh this morning,” he said, though the uncertainty in his voice betrayed him.
It was a strange scenery that unfolded right in front of her, and Katherine watched the change with a mix of fascination but also dread. This wasn’t normal. She had witnessed dark magic before although always from some distance. But this? This was a whole different level.
Katherine’s gaze snapped to Rebekah. “What is going on, Rebekah? This isn’t anything subtil at all.” and with a hiss, she added “Even the weather seems to change.”
Rebekah’s lips pressed into a thin line, her blue eyes narrowing as she shoved her chair back, the scrape of wood against stone cutting through the rising din. “I told you: It’s the Hollow.” She stood, her eyes set on the horizon where the clouds gathered at the horizon. “My piece of it is waking up. Elijah’s here in Manosque, and it’s sensing him.”
Katherine leaned back, crossing her arms with a scoff, though the creeping chill in her bones belied her nonchalance. “What ‘Hollow’? Is this that little family curse you all split among yourselves? How convenient it picks now to throw a tantrum.” Even if 'little' seemed like an understatement. Of course, Katherine knew that this dark magic had to be something strong if you had to split it between four Original Vampires and Elijah chose to erase his memories rather than live with them. Despite it or nonetheless, no one had said it had such an impact. When Klaus had spoken of an evil, ancient witch spirit, she had somehow expected something completely different, even if she couldn't say exactly what she had imagined. However, it certainly didn’t contain dead plants everywhere.
A low rumble sounded in the distance, so faint it might have been mistaken for a passing truck, but Katherine’s keen hearing caught the telltale growl of thunder. The breeze picked up, teasing the edges of napkins and ruffling the tablecloths, as if nature itself were stirring uneasily. It was late spring. Thunderstorms were not uncommon and therefore not completely out of the question, but as far as she knew, none had been announced and they were still rare during this period of the season.
Rebekah ignored the chaos, her focus locked on Katherine. “It’s not a tantrum; it’s a reaction. We divided the Hollow to keep it dormant, scattered ourselves to weaken it. Elijah’s in this town, and my being here is stirring it. It thrives when we’re close.” Her voice dropped, edged with urgency. “He erased his memories to escape the pain of losing us: Nik, me, the family. He couldn’t bear it otherwise. But that doesn’t stop the magic.”
The breeze grew steadier, carrying a faint dampness that hinted at rain somewhere far off. The clouds on the horizon thickened, their gray deepening, though the sun still held its ground, casting long shadows across the terrace. A waiter hurried over, his brow furrowed as he inspected the ruined centerpiece, muttering about fetching the manager. Guests exchanged uneasy glances, some pulling out phones to snap photos of the decayed flowers, their voices a low hum of speculation. “Maybe it’s a blight,” one man suggested, though his tone lacked conviction.
Katherine now stood, too. “If your proximity to Elijah is causing this, then leave, Rebekah. I have very little interest in feeling the effects of dark magic. Especially since it turns out differently than expected. I thought it only concerned you, not the general public.” Another roll of thunder echoed, still distant but closer now, a soft warning that blended with the rustle of leaves and the clink of glassware. The air felt heavier, charged with an unspoken tension that made the hairs on her neck rise.
Rebekah’s eyes flashed with defiance, but there was a flicker of worry beneath it. “I can’t stay long. I know that. If I linger, it’ll only get worse.” She gestured vaguely at the wilting flora, the unsettled guests now whispering about curses and bad omens. “Nonetheless, there’s still time left. Enough time to make sure you understand what this is about so you don’t screw this up.”
"Why does this sound like this mess is my fault? What's happening here is because of your family. Not because of me," Katherine corrected her as she tried to get a waiter's attention so she could finally leave. Sure, she could just walk away, but she was trying to appear normal. She didn't necessarily want to stand out as a welcher. After all, it seems like she has to stay in this city for a longer time until her mission is completed.
The flames of the candles on the tables flickered briefly, drawing gasps from the guests. A woman knocked over her wine glass, the red liquid pooling like blood on the tablecloth, and the murmurs grew sharper. “This isn’t normal,” a man muttered, rising to his feet, his wife tugging at his sleeve. The waiter returned, flustered, barking at a colleague to fetch the owner again as the atmosphere thickened with unease. The breeze swirled now, lifting scattered petals from the ground and sending them spiraling like dark confetti.
Katherine again tried to signal the waiter with a flick of her hand. “We’re done here. Bring the bill.”
The waiter, visibly rattled, scurried off and returned moments later with a leather folder. Rebekah tossed a stack of euros inside without glancing at it, her movements brisk. “Let’s go. I need air, and this place is about to panic.” She didn’t wait for Katherine to follow and instead just grabbed her by the arm, almost dragging her out while Katherine tried to get rid of her grip without raising too much attention. Although the attention of the other guests weren’t on them anyway.
Unfortunately, Katherine didn’t have a choice but to follow the blonde Original, weaving through the gawking guests who were now gathering their things or murmuring about the 'strange weather.' The air outside was cooler, laced with the scent of damp earth and distant rain. The clouds had spread, their edges softening the sunlight into a muted glow, and the breeze tugged at her coat, whispering of the storm to come. Wind was flickering through their hair, and blew individual strands of hair into Katherine’s face, which she tried to get out of her face with hectic movements of her hand.
“This is your fault,” Katherine said, raising her voice over the rustle of leaves. “Next time you want a reunion, send a postcard. And get your damn hands off me. I’m not your pet.”
Rebekah didn’t release her entirely, her fingers lingering just enough to steer Katherine toward the parking lot across the street. “Don’t make a scene. We’re not done talking. Follow me to the car. Unless you fancy getting soaked?” She glanced skyward, where the smudge of gray clouds had thickened into a brooding mass, swallowing the horizon.
Katherine hesitated, having no desire to be in a closed room with Rebekah, knowing her habits of lashing out when she gets too annoyed. She’s a lot like Klaus in that matter. “Fine,” she snapped, striding alongside Rebekah, her heels clicking on the pavement.
They reached the parking lot, a modest gravel expanse dotted with a few cars, the air humming with the subtle vibration of distant thunder. Rebekah led her to a sleek black rental sedan. Unassuming but luxurious, typical Mikaelson flair even in hiding. She unlocked it with a beep, sliding into the driver’s seat without a word. Katherine paused outside, eyeing the vehicle suspiciously, but another gust of wind carried the first fat drops of rain, splattering against her shoulder. With a curse under her breath, she yanked open the passenger door and climbed in, slamming it shut just as the downpour began in earnest.
Rain hammered the roof like a thousand impatient fingers, the droplets racing down the windshield in rivulets. Outside, the world had turned a uniform gray, the hilly landscape of Manosque blurred into misty shadows under the heavy clouds. The storm’s arrival felt almost too timed, too ominous, but Katherine dismissed it as coincidence; for now. After all, there was no sign that this thunderstorm was also because of this so called 'Hollow'. Perhaps there was a slight, tiny chance that it wasn't as daunting as expected. She turned to Rebekah, her expression a mask of irritation. “Alright, Blondie. You dragged me here. Finish your little speech from the restaurant. What’s this obsession with Elijah having some mysterious contact? You act like he’s a lost puppy who can’t fend for himself.”
Rebekah gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles whitening, though the engine remained off. The rain’s relentless patter filled the silence for a moment, amplifying the tension inside the car. “I’m sure of it; he’s not alone. Someone’s guiding him, shaping his life here. And you need to keep that in mind.”
Rebekah seemed to be really convinced that Elijah was in contact with one or more person that allegedly had some kind of influence over him although neither Klaus had told her about it (even though it wouldn’t surprise her if he chose to ‘forget’ about such a piece of information), nor had she seen anyone who had been constantly at his sight whenever she had witnessed the pub Elijah played him. Frankly, Katherine had never met Elijah outside the pub. She doesn’t know what he does when he’s not playing piano in there. She’s not even sure if she wants to know. Actually, she prefers not to pry on his private life. She didn’t want to know too much or think too much about him and his action or ... reaction, especially when it came to her.
Katherine arched an eyebrow, leaning back against the leather seat. “Why is that such a problem? From what you said, his behavior’s improved since Marcel last saw him ripping through that nightclub. He’s settled, playing piano in a pub, for God’s sake. If someone’s helping him, maybe it’s a good thing. He doesn’t seem like the unhinged mess you described after Marcel found him the first time.” Which again let Katherine wonder why they even left him alone. Even if they cannot talk or be near each other, who would let a man without memories be all by himself and alone? Especially someone as powerful as Elijah?
Rebekah’s eyes flashed with frustration, her gaze fixed on the rain-streaked window. “Because, like I already said, we – or rather I – don’t know who it is or what they want. Elijah’s vulnerable without his memories. If this person’s feeding him lies about his family, twisting his view of us… it could turn him against everything he once stood for. We need him back as he was, not some puppet version poisoned by outsiders.”
Katherine snorted, crossing her arms. “Half-truths again? You and Klaus love throwing crumbs at me, but never the full story. Why the secrecy around certain things? No one told me the dark magic could mess with the weather, for instance.” She gestured outside, where the rain pounded harder against the car, turning the world into a watery haze of gray. The thunder rolled closer now, a deep vibration that rattled the windows. Okay, Katherine didn’t know for sure if this was really because of dark magic or perhaps something natural but she still had a weird feeling about the sudden change of weather. As if suddenly wilting flowers weren’t already upsetting enough. “Look at this: it started so innocently with a breeze, and now it’s a full storm. Shouldn’t we be more worried about this Hollow thing rampaging than some phantom contact Elijah might have?”
Rebekah exhaled sharply, her fingers drumming on the wheel as the rain’s rhythm intensified, a steady drumbeat echoing their impasse. “I don’t know everything myself, alright? I’m not privy to all the Hollow’s tricks. It’s ancient, unpredictable. Splitting it was supposed to contain it, but proximity like this… it stirs things up. The weather’s just a symptom; it’ll pass once I’m gone. But Elijah’s safety? That’s what matters. He needs to remember who he is, the brother who put family first, who endured centuries for us. Not this… shadow of himself, influenced by God knows who.”
The brunette vampire still wasn’t entirely convinced. Could she believe Rebekah when she told her that she doesn’t know everything herself? Or was it just another trick? They loved to make things difficult for her, after all.
Katherine studied Rebekah in silence for a moment. For all her sharp edges and venom, there was something unmistakably familiar in the tension of her posture. The same rigid control, the same barely restrained fear Klaus always masked with cruelty. Rebekah Mikaelson did not like Katherine. That much had never been a secret. But neither did she like the fact that Elijah had once dared to chose Katherine over the comfort of his family. Albeit, had he really? When had she been spared something because of Elijah’s influence or action? In Katherine's opinion, that was a completely false assumption.
“You know,” Katherine said finally, her voice quieter now, sharper in its precision, “you keep talking about outsiders poisoning Elijah against his family. But you never stop to consider that maybe… he didn’t need help with that.” She turned slightly in her seat, her gaze unwavering. “Maybe your family did a fine job of that on its own.”
Rebekah’s head snapped toward her. “Don’t.”
“Oh, don’t what?” Katherine countered coolly. “Point out the obvious? You act like Elijah forgetting everything was some tragic accident. He chose it. He chose oblivion over being bound to Klaus, to you, to your endless cycle of control and sacrifice.” Her lips curled into something almost sympathetic. “That should tell you more than any imaginary stranger ever could.”
Rebekah’s jaw tightened, her hands curling into fists. For a heartbeat, Katherine half-expected her to lash out. Instead, Rebekah exhaled sharply, staring straight ahead.
“You think I don’t know that?” she said quietly. “You think I don’t hear his absence every single day? Elijah always was the voice of reason, he was the one who stayed when Nik became unbearable. He was the conscience. The anchor. And now he’s… gone. Walking around, smiling at strangers, playing piano like he’s some ordinary man. Not recognizing the people who once meant everything to him.” Her voice cracked, just barely. “That isn’t him. Not entirely.”
The thunder rolled again, closer this time, vibrating through the frame of the car.
“And what if it is?” Katherine asked, not even in a cruel tone. She just wanted to know whether there was a possibility that he could actually be happy for once. “What if this version of Elijah is the most honest one he’s ever been?”
Rebekah turned the key. The engine came to life with a low hum, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, she shifted in her seat, then abruptly reached for the door handle.
“Get out.”
Katherine blinked. “Excuse me?”
“I said get out,” Rebekah repeated, already pushing her own door open as rain immediately soaked her sleeve. “I’ve said what I needed to say. You know what to watch for now. If there is someone in his life, someone guiding him, you need to notice it.”
Katherine stared at her incredulously. “Are you kidding me right now?” She gestured toward the rain-slashed windshield. “It’s pouring. You dragged me in here, unloaded your cryptic warnings, and now you’re tossing me out like a bad habit?”
Rebekah’s expression hardened. “Consider it motivation. You always work best when you’re uncomfortable.” Then, after a pause, she added more quietly, “And don’t misunderstand me. I don’t trust you. But Elijah trusted you once. That has to count for something.”
For a moment, Katherine considered refusing, staying put out of sheer spite. But she knew this game. Rebekah was giving her just enough leash to hang herself, if it came to that. She was fast, she could as easily just snap her neck and then push her out, leaving her lying in the rain until she woke up again.
“Unbelievable,” Katherine muttered as she reached for the handle. “You Mikaelsons really do have a talent for making allies regret everything.”
She stepped out into the rain, instantly soaked as the cold water seeped through her clothes that were chosen without having rain (or a thunderstorm) in mind. Behind her, the car door slammed shut. The engine revved, and moments later, the sedan pulled away, disappearing into the curtain of gray. It didn't take long for her hair to stick to her skin, completely wet. A disgusting feeling.
Katherine stood there for a moment as rain continued to plaster her hair on her face, thunder rolling overhead. Somewhere in the distance, lightning flashed: brief, pale, almost subtle enough to be dismissed as imagination.
Almost.
The rain showed no mercy. It soaked through fabric and illusion alike, running cold along her spine, clinging to her skin as if intent on reminding her that there was no shelter to be found. Neither here nor in the situation she had allowed herself to be dragged into. Katherine brushed a wet strand of hair from her face, only for it to fall back immediately, heavy and uncooperative.
She hated this. Not the rain. Not even Rebekah’s predictable cruelty. She hated the uncertainty.
Elijah had always been many things: moral, steadfast, infuriatingly noble (when it had suited his needs). He had also been protective, fierce, loyal (tho his family). But honest? Katherine wasn’t sure anyone had ever allowed him to be that. Not Klaus. Not his family. She had tried it once when she asked him to choose her, to start a life with her. To leave everything behind and start new. She had told him that she had lost so much of her life to Klaus and so had he. She had told him that it was their turn. But he declined, choose to walk away instead for whatever reason. Was it something he had wanted or something which was expected of him? The thought lingered, uncomfortable and persistent, like the low rumble of thunder still echoing through the hills.
If Rebekah was right, if someone was guiding him, then that meant Elijah wasn’t as alone as everyone seemed to believe. And if that guidance had steadied him, given him peace instead of rage… then what, exactly, was Katherine supposed to do? Tear that away? Drag him back into a life of blood, loyalty, and sacrifice under the guise of who he truly was?
She lifted her gaze toward the storm-darkened sky, unease curling in her chest as the rain poured collected in her lashes und poured down her face.
“Great,” she murmured to herself. “Just great. Exactly what I needed. Not.”
A sharp flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating the parking lot for a brief, stark second. The world seemed frozen in that pale, although slightly blue-ish light, every raindrop suspended, every shadow sharpened. Katherine inhaled slowly when the raging flash of lightning was reflected in her brown eyes.
Somewhere in Manosque, a piano key was struck a fraction too hard.
And for the first time, Katherine felt it.

A/N: Do you think Rebekah's warning is justified? And do you think we're going to see Rebekah again? Let me know. ;)
Please consider leaving feedback, as it keeps my muse for writing alive. <3 Remember to stay kind.
I know that it is now common to have mains and exclusives. And while there is no problem with having mains and maybe exclusive ship partners, it can be problematic to become exclusive with certain (canon) characters, as it leads to exclusion. Especially if you have interacted with the same characters before and then suddenly decide to interact only with one specific person. Sudden exclusion, even though there have been previous, good interactions, can be hurtful, and I hope that this community will interact with each other in a kind, considerate way.
A/N: Hello & welcome back. In order to celebrate Katherine's 551st birthday, here's a new chapter of 'Love Will Remember'. I hope you enjoy it.

It had, in fact, taken her a few days to actually try the restaurant recommendation. She just needed some distraction and couldn't spend every minute of her life thinking about her ex-boyfriend. Active interactions with him were bad enough because she didn't feel as indifferent to him as she would have liked. He still triggered something in her and that was far from complete disgust. Maybe it would be easier if she could hate him exclusively, or if he was completely irrelevant to her. As soon as any feelings or emotions were in the way, everything was harder. Maybe she just had to change the way she thought. What would she do if she didn't know him?
The answer was obvious and she had already thought about it. If he were anyone less important and just any man, it would be easy. Flirting, making eyes at him, placing thought-through touches here and there, enticing him to a meeting place, and before he knew it, he was already on his way to the agreed destination. That would still make her feel incredibly icky as she doesn't like doing such things because someone else demands it, but it would be bearable. At least more bearable than this situation.
How long had she been here and what had she achieved so far? Hardly anything. Except for the fact that, for whatever reason, she had unconsciously aroused his interest.
Again something she should not allow, she should be the one holding the reins, not him.
It was her game, not his.
She is going to decide what direction their interaction will take.
Of course (even if she would like to deny it), it flattered her that he showed initiative. If she did not know each other, she would respond immediately. If that were the case, they would have been in an entirely different situation. A situation in which she wouldn't try out this restaurant alone. A situation where they would ...
STOP. Control your thoughts.
A sigh escaped her lips before she put the last fork with boeuf en daube into her mouth.
The food here was really good and the restaurant was also very nice, as it even had a small terrace from which you could admire the hilly landscape. In addition, the tables were decorated with small bouquets of roses and lavender, which were color-coordinated with the napkins and tablecloths. She guesses someone here had a good eye for detail.
For a relatively small town, this restaurant really fit into the picture, as it somehow had something romantic and dreamy. The railings of the terrace, which were covered with wisteria and which certainly bloomed exceptionally beautifully in spring, probably contributed to this.
Katherine had finished her meal and gently dabbed her lips with the napkin.
An attentive waiter had realized that she had finished her meal and came to her side to ask if he could bring her something.
"Just the bill, please."
"Actually, we would like to have a bottle of wine and two glasses," spoke a voice behind her, which made Katherine freeze.
She hadn't noticed anyone stepping behind her, the restaurant was pretty busy, which is why people often went out or in. She also sat so that she could admire the view, as she wanted to distract herself and actually enjoy the dinner instead of staring at a door in panic because she was paranoid.
The person behind her circled the table before sitting down at Katherine's table without asking. The blue eyes and blonde hair were unmistakable, even if you had forgotten the voice.
Katherine put on a forced friendly smile.
"I didn't know that everyone seems to be let in here. Too bad, now I definitely have to pull a star."
"Your manners are terrible as always, but what else can you expect?" In the blue eyes of her counterpart, the disgust was clearly visible.
"Maybe I'm just not happy about the society that forces itself on me without being asked, doesn't it have to do with manners? To ask before sitting down? Or better yet, not to appear at all unasked?"
Katherine was about to get up and go because she really didn't feel like dealing with her.
"Would you like to have a fork in your hand again?" it sounded awfully sweet, which actually caused Katherine to keep sitting because she had no doubt the blonde would do just that. Again.
"Your methods are definitely not very praiseworthy."
"You have to be treated this way; apparently it seems to work."
The conversation fell silent for a moment when the waiter brought a bottle of wine and the glasses and cleared the place setting including the potentially dangerous fork.
"What do you want, Rebekah?"
She didn't seem to be able to escape her anyway, so she could ask directly what she wanted. Was that another way to bully her? Letting her know she was being watched? Did this mean Klaus was also here? If Rebekah was here herself, couldn't she talk to Elijah and get him to return? The two of them were also very close, surely she could somehow get through to him?
Although her physical presence here did surprise Katherine, hadn't Klaus mentioned any witch spirits? Something about being forced to never see each other again? Well, Katherine didn't know exactly how this worked and what it meant that they could never see each other again. Perhaps this meant that the siblings were not allowed to approach at ten meters. Which would be absurd, because that would not be a reason to choose to forget everything as Elijah decided to do.
"Would you be surprised if I said I was here to visit? Sometimes you need a little change from the world and the hectic life in the city that never sleeps, so why not visit this beautiful piece of earth?"
Katherine narrowed her eyes slightly, for she didn't believe the blonde. But what she could deduce from her words was that she apparently lived in New York and not in New Orleans with Klaus. This is surprising, considering that Klaus usually didn't like to keep his siblings on a long leash. However, this would actually coincide with the statement that the siblings could not see each other or were rather not allowed to see each other.
Even if the story would be very adventurous, if it turned out to be a lie, it would not surprise Katherine when it comes to Klaus. Klaus could appropriate lies. Creating a pretext just to perhaps gain an advantage would be nothing unusual for him. Therefore, it was of interest for Katherine to verify the truth about what was said.
After all, the whole thing affected her too and she was extremely careful as far as witches and magic were involved.
"Don't tell me you took the long journey just because you wanted to see me. Should I be in awe now?" Her tone is sweet but mocking. Information was a rare thing, so perhaps if she provoked Rebekah a bit, she'd get to hear something. Often the devil is in the details and Katherine knew that details were frequently the most important thing that decides whether something is a success or not.
"Of course not. No one would fly over half the world just to see the world's sluttiest vampire." Rebekah rolled her eyes which caused Katherine to snort.
"And yet you somehow managed to track me down and ruin my evening."
"A necessary evil, I fear."
"Well, I didn't ask for a visit. It's up to you to end this 'necessary evil' and go home."
"See, that would be rather irresponsible, especially since my brother seems to believe that you are the key to the solution to our problem."
"I certainly didn't ask to be the key for anything. But unfortunately, I can't abandon this hopeless mission because I have to fear that I'll have Klaus at my throat. But hey, you don't seem to be too convinced that my stay here is a good idea, so why don't you go and tell Klaus that someone else should deal with your 'little' problem?"
"I think it's a major mistake to entrust you with such a delicate matter. But...–" the next word didn't seem to leave Rebekah's mouth easily. "–... perhaps he's not entirely mistaken. I really do think Elijah was rather stupid to get involved with you but I also know that it is rather rare that he gets involved with any person. This means that you truly must mean something to him, regardless if you deserve his love and attention or not. And if that's the case, then there's a good chance you might make him remember. Even if I think there are better people or moments to remember once the memories get back."
Of course, she had to hand out another blow although it was rather pitiful that the Mikaelsons had to resort to her for any reaction when it came to Elijah. What happened to 'family above all'? His strongest love has always been his family, so Katherine assumed it should be them who make him remember. But for some reason, his siblings didn't seem to be good enough.
"That still doesn't explain why you came to visit me..."
"I didn't come to visit you! At least not initially. Believe me, you aren't worth the money spent on the tickets."
As if Rebekah actually spent money on some plane tickets. Gosh, this is straining. Katherine's gaze fell from the blonde and to the bottle of wine that was still untouched. Something Katherine intended to change which is why she opened the bottle of wine and filled something in her glass. Not into Rebekah's because she has two healthy hands to do that herself. Then, she led the glass to her lips and took a large sip – alcohol is much needed right now.
Rebekah now also grabbed the bottle of wine (not without glaring at her first) before she filled a bit into her own glass. Unlike Katherine, however, she didn't drink it just yet.
"So?" Katherine started because Rebekah still hadn't explained why she showed up in there. Surely that couldn't have been an unlucky coincidence.
"I came to visit Elijah..." Rebekah finally admitted. "I do it sometimes. Have actually done it a few times for the past couple of months, years even. It makes me feel better to see that he's okay. At least as okay as he can be in his state. He doesn't recognize me and you have no idea how much that hurts. He's my big brother, he has been always there for me whenever things got difficult. He always had something smart to say, no matter how annoying his wisdom or advice could have been. Nik often doesn't bother to listen to my side, but Elijah did. I miss him and even though I cannot truly get him back in any foreseeable time, I at least want to make sure that he's safe."
Katherine bit the inside of her cheek because although Rebekah was unbelievably annoying, she sounded genuine about her worries. Not that she had it in her to feel sorry for Rebekah or that rotten family, but somehow ... doesn't it also bother Katherine that Elijah managed to forget her? As if she has never existed? That he could just erase her like that?
She knew it shouldn't bother her, she should be happy that she was no longer at risk of being in any way involved with him (haha, what a lie, Katherine, you did enjoy the guarantees he could give when he was the last option). She was free of him, that's a good thing, right?
Right?
Katherine took another sip of her wine while she tried to get her mind under control again.
"What makes you think he isn't safe? He looks rather content with his current life..."
"You already met him?" Now Rebekah sounded surprised but also suspicious.
"Of course I did. That's my task, remember? 'Make Elijah return to your family' blablabla. I won't risk getting another visit from Klaus." Her words were a growl because she hated being controlled and used like this. "Although I wasn't spared of getting a visit from you..."
Rebekah shot her a glare and knowing how easily Mikaelsons can get irritated, Katherine tried to smooth the situation.
"Don't worry, he doesn't remember me either, so I'm not sure if Klaus's plan works at all," Katherine said it like that was the main issue. This really wasn't the case as the main issue was that Katherine didn't want to get involved with Elijah in that way again.
"Anyway. You still haven't explained why you are worried about his safety? He's still an Original vampire, he's less fragile than any normal vampire with memories." Strangely, Klaus had been worried about Elijah's safety as well, among other things. Something about not wanting to risk anyone taking advantage of him. But Elijah still had a brain, he was still smart. Surely he won't fall for cheap lies, right?
"He still got involved with you despite remembering everything and you have taken advantage of him!"
"I surely did not use him!" Initially, they had a deal, and their partnership turned into something more. But she hasn't used him. They had a mutual agreement, there had been nothing shady about it. "I gave him the cure and let him decide where to go regarding us. You can't accuse me of deceiving and using him. I upheld my part of our deal."
It's still a rather sensitive topic but Katherine wants to ensure that people got it right. She hasn't deceived him and she hasn't used him. If she had used him, she would have tried to make him make a deal with Klaus and still use the cure for her own means. Something she hasn't done. Couldn't they change the topic?
"You are still not the right choice for him."
"That's not up to you to decide! And it hardly matters now anyway. We're not a pair, we're not dating, we are nothing. I'm not interested in him."
"Really? Then explain how you plan on being successful in your so-called mission? I was under the impression you intend to try your usual scheme: Seduce and make them fall in love with you until they are willing to do everything for you. Like a cheap prostitute."
"Oh yes? Do you speak from experience?" Katherine crossed her arms in front of her chest and leaned back. As if Rebekah was any better.
"What? I'm bloody sure that's how you wrapped him around your finger in the first place. Back in 1492 and a few years ago!"
"Please, I did nothing with him when I was human." Stupid young her had believed that she was engaged to Klaus, after all. Aside from that, Elijah didn't appear to be interested in her in that special way.
Rebekah glared at her, obviously disagreeing with her. Admittedly, it wasn't a surprise because Rebekah seemed to believe that she was the reason why Klaus and Elijah quarreled. This is partly true but not for the reason she is making responsible. Katherine had dared to escape and she remembers too well that Elijah was tasked with finding and returning her. Something in which he had been unsuccessful. So it wasn't because she was allegedly making eyes at Elijah, it was because she managed to escape.
"To get back to my core message, I just want someone to watch him. I don't trust you even a tiny bit, but at least you're a known risk. Even if you claim not to have taken advantage of it, there are definitely other risk factors. Don't you think it's weird that he doesn't want to know anything about his family? Someone who is without memory should be stuck in an identity crisis and should be wanting to find out who he is and where he originates from. Everyone wants to belong somewhere."
Admittedly, even though she doesn't like to accept it, Rebekah is kinda right. For someone without memories, he does seem strangely chilled.
"He knows his name, and perhaps he has a feeling that his family isn't a peaceful and sunny meadow." Basic instinct tells even naive strangers that this family is trouble even though Klaus can be rather charming (which is another thing she doesn't like to admit).
"No, that's not the reason. Elijah was swallowed up by the earth for a few months and suddenly he appears in this city with a seemingly orderly life. I don't think that he has found his inner center and that everything has just happened without a reason."
"Why not?"
"Because he has changed over the few times I got to visit him."
"What do you mean?"
"It's hardly explainable. But I think he's not alone."
"And that's supposed to mean what?"
"Shortly after our family decided to split up, Marcel met Elijah in New York. Marcel had actually been watching him for quite a while."
Katherine was for a moment a bit confused as Rebekah casually threw another name in. 'Marcel'. Is she supposed to know him? Then, however, it dawned on Katherine who this Marcel was. The guy who pretended to be king in New Orleans when she sent Klaus the message that the witches were plotting something against him. How could she have forgotten about Marcel? Although she's admittedly surprised he made it out alive, considering how territorial Klaus is. The whole thing is even more astounding because Klaus does not tolerate people who challenge his 'claim of power'. Katherine is aware that Klaus had spent a considerable part of his life in New Orleans. As someone who had focused her whole life on avoiding him, his whereabouts had of course not been unknown to her. Actually quite funny how locally close they had been at times. But that's what sometimes offered the most protection because you wouldn't suspect it.
The brunette vampire hinted to Rebekah to continue and she seemed to understand that 'Marcel' seemed to be a term to Katherine.
"Anyway, he described Elijah as a complete mess. He didn't even know his own name, didn't know who Marcel was, and didn't even know why he couldn't stay in this city. He had to threaten him to leave and surprisingly, he did."
As far as Katherine was aware, Marcel was a simple vampire. One who had a huge following and allies. But nothing Elijah would feel threatened by.
"Marcel found Elijah again a few days later. He was ... unhinged. He didn't have himself under control. He was essentially ripping through a nightclub."
Katherine tensed because that wasn't what she wanted to hear. She had already feared that Elijah might not be completely harmless. Now having the confirmation was not something she wanted to have confirmed, especially as her mission was not yet complete. She didn't wish to be in danger and she certainly didn't want to have her head or heart ripped out by him. On the other side, however, Elijah had appeared quite calm the times they had met.
"So now you're telling me that he went from out-of-control to piano-playing entertainer at a pub and that's why you're suspicious about whether he's not alone? It's been how many years since the memory loss happened? Five? Seven? Ten? Maybe he had time to develop and learn. Like most ordinary people who get thrown in the cold water."
Maybe Katherine just didn't want to admit that another difficulty had been added. She needed to stay positive, otherwise she'd lose her mind. She did not need more difficulties.
"No, that is not what is true in this case; at least not exclusively. Marcel told me that Elijah had been accompanied."
"And?"
"Well, considering that Elijah seems to have such a settled life compared to what Marcel witnessed back then, it's possible that he still has some guidance from someone."
"Or maybe he has arranged himself with this to him 'new life'."
"Can you please not be so stubbornly blind?" Rebekah hissed, apparently annoyed.
"What? All I'm saying is that a few years have passed which is certainly enough time for someone to get his life under control. That doesn't necessarily have to mean that he's under the influence of someone." At least that is what Katherine hoped to be true.
"And I'm telling you that I'm sure he's still involved with this person Marcel had seen back then."
"Who even is this person?" Katherine questioned because if Rebekah is so hell-bent on them still having contact, then surely she can provide more information.
Rebekah, however, chose to take another sip of her wine while apparently pondering over the potential answer.
"Well, I haven't been there when Marcel saw Elijah with that person..."
Somehow Katherine wasn't convinced this was the entire truth.
"And he couldn't make a description of this person? Did he even see this person?"
"Can't you just accept that this person from back then might still be in the picture?" Rebekah retorted which caused Katherine to sigh. Is she speaking the truth or is she hiding something?
"And this possibility would be so worse? Especially considering the fact that your family still insists that I have to deal with Elijah?"
"Again, you're a known risk."
"No one says that the other person – if this person even still exists – is actually a risk."
Is Katherine trying to talk her way out of her 'mission'? Yes, absolutely because although she admittedly wasn't so indifferent when it came to Elijah, she also didn't want to put herself at risk. She would think it to be better if someone else dealt with the issue.
"Why can't Marcel talk to Elijah? He already seems to have experience."
Rebekah's flat hand brushed over the tablecloth and her blue eyes followed the movement before she decided to answer.
"Because it was Marcel who told him that he had to leave. Because it was Marcel who told him that he should find a life somewhere else."
"Still no reason for him to not go talking to Elijah again." To her, it only sounded logical that Marcel goes talking to Elijah again. He was the one who sent him away, surely he can tell him to come back?
"To be honest, I'm not sure if it will be effective. The encounter between the two did not go optimally at the time, and this other person was also present at the first meeting. It could be that Elijah remembers this encounter as negative. Elijah wanted answers that Marcel didn't give him."
Katherine is still not convinced that it would be impossible to meet again. Finally, Elijah seemed to know that Marcel could give him answers, so he was no stranger; unlike Katherine. Perhaps there were still some unanswered things open, so perhaps Elijah would want to meet up with Marcel. Then, it'd be easy to set a trap. Far more easy than having her get Elijah's trust somehow.
"If he still surrounds himself with these people..." People? Plural? She thought it was just a person... " they could have shaped his opinion of his family. He doesn't seem to have open questions about his background, so maybe they gave him a picture of his family, which doesn't trigger a need for answers."
And could he be blamed? He's probably better off without them anyway.
"Why are you now interested in winning him back? Why not last year? Why not two years ago? Why not three years from now?" Why did it have to be her? Is there no other person on this planet who could take her place?
"This has internal reasons that don't concern you."
This reply caused Katherine to chuckle darkly. "Great, so you want me to risk my head while I try to approach Elijah somehow and you can't even tell me why you're so obsessed with having him back?"
"Well, part of it still has a lot to do with us not wanting him to be used."
"And I can only stress again that he looks happy and content." He doesn't look like someone who is getting used and manipulated. Even though the Elijah she knows would never waste his talent in a pub.
"Well, if you can give proof that he's not at risk? That no one is involved in his life that might poison his view and personality?"
Of course, Katherine has no proof, especially because she would need to be a part of his life to actually know what's going on. Somehow she didn't seem to be capable of withdrawing herself from this involvement...
"I'm sure–" Katherine didn't finish her train of thought when she noticed that the small bouquet of roses and lavender suddenly started to wither at high speed. That was certainly not normal. Katherine looked around, noticing that every bouquet started to decay at such rapid speed.
"What the– what is this?"
The corners of Rebekah's lips dropped, a pained expression in her eyes. "It's the dark magic..."

A/N: Please consider leaving (positive) feedback as it keeps my muse for writing alive. ♥ Remember to stay kind.
Anyone else have no idea what any of these Nonnie’s are talking about when they say anything about the originals? Like guys, Kalijah fans hated that show. Most of us barely watched maybe the first season. We are a fan of better writing, acting, and a lot less cliches.
Thing is, Katherine going after and losing to baby vamp Elena never made any sense. It was Plec garbage. The main reason was her being bitchy about Elijah. So I would assume in this au that would have never happened.
I do love the idea of Kalijah coffin cuddling. They are more firey but they only show certain sides to each other. I guess in every au Klaus is just a douche. But less so with Caroline.
TVD did seem to forget about older vampires being stronger than younger ones. It didn't only happen during the Elena/Katherine fight. I do see, however, that a younger vampire can gain an advantage if they use something unpredictable. Kinda like you are in a fight with someone stronger, already on the ground but you manage to throw sand in their eyes, therefore throwing him off.
What's also interesting in this fight is the motivation. Elena was fighting for her life because I believe she knew that Katherine intended to kill her whereas Katherine probably felt superior. She was emotional during that scene (in comparison to her usual strategic fighting style if she even fights – Katherine is usually scheming in the background) because she was so upset about the situation (Elijah choosing to leave, witnessing Elena still have an actual life with actual friends etc) and she certainly never expected Elena to become potentially dangerous to her.
In all honestly, it kinda reminds me of the Last Agni Kai between Azula and Zuko (avatar the last airbender). Azula is the better fire bender, considered a prodigy. She always wins. But in the last fight, she was a) emotionally not her usual self & too sure of her victory. Zuko won, also because he had another unfair advantage in the form of Katara helping him (like when Elena used the cure).
Imagine if TVD was a soulmark show, and Trevor scared Katerina into running from Elijah. (Especially if Elijah had finally, Finally convinced Klaus to spare his Soulmate.) 500 years of running from Elijah, her soulmate. You KNOW he isn't going to compel her to remain in the tomb when he catches her, after all, Klaus doesn't want her--she's Elijah's target, Elijah's soulmate.
Ooooh, that would add to the angst because Katherine was also terrified of Elijah ("Good evening Katerina. Thank you for having the good sense to be frightened.")
Yeah, Elijah wouldn't be upset at Elena for using the cure on Katherine he'd be upset at her for trading her (his Katerina's) life for Bonnie's (especially just by going on someone like Silas's word). He thought she was better, and then she goes and proves that she's not.
Now Damon and Elena have taken his Katerina from him, and if he finds out it was Elena and Jeremy who killed Kol and not the Salvatore's, he will be pissed. Personally I'd rather have Klaus angry at me then Elijah. Klaus is impulsive--Elijah is calculating, which is worse.
The thing with Elijah is that he respects Elena's loyalty. It's one of the qualities he really appreciates and which he misses in his family. He can't blame her for wanting to save her friend. On the other hand, one cannot put into words how much he deplores/loathes that this mission collided Katherine's wellbeing.
If Elijah knew who killed Kol (and it was so strange that it was never mentioned because surely one would want to know what happened to his sibling?), then Jeremy (+ most of the rest) would be dead. Having been fed to Silas would have been a pleasure in comparison to what Elijah would have done. Because you're right, Elijah IS scary. He's calm, cool and collected. He doesn't show his emotions. He casually ☠ people without blinking.
Damon would definitely brag about killing Katherine. I can see him thinking that Elijah wouldn't care either, especially since Elijah was daggered during that summer, thus he tells Elijah everything--including how Silas lied about bringing Bonnie back and Katherine told both Elena and Damon that Silas wouldn't keep his word, and how Katherine begged and how she didn't want to die--thus enraging Elijah, also turning Elijah's anger on Elena as well. His Katerina is dead, she died terrified and scared--being drained by Silas for a deal for a witch who died bringing back a boy who killed his baby brother, who died warning everyone of Silas.
I can see Elijah killing both Elena and Damon tbh, after learning everything if Silas draining Katherine had killed her permanently.
That would be a rather stupid move of Damon but Damon is Damon and sometimes doesn't really act smart. If he's that stupid, then he had it coming even more.
I'm honestly not sure about Elena though if we only consider her role in Katherine turning human. Elijah has an understanding of her (which is what he also told Katherine because he couldn't understand how Kat doesn't have sympathy for Elena). He can’t blame her for defending herself because that's what everyone would do. He's realistic and knows that everyone would use every possible thing in such a situation when it's about life and death. He will also acknowledge that Elena didn't start that specific fight. He'll disapprove Elena's taunting of Katherine though because he certainly won't let anyone badmouth/insult her.
It's an interesting idea that I would love to read about.
I already saw @strongbeautifulfulloflight answered asks about that topic and I think the rune thing that reacts to the birth/death of one's mate is a good idea.
I'm not sure if I would make the mark a name because names can change. What if someone waits for x but x goes by y now? I personally don't deem it as aesthetically beautiful to have an entire name written on your wrist/arm, especially if it's a longer name (but I personally also don't like tattoos). I love angst so not having the full name perhaps adds more angst / drama?
It could be a universal symbol of love. ∞ or a ♥ that only appears once your soulmate is born. It could be the faint (smaller) imprint of the mate's fingertip kinda like a birthmark. Or it could be the zodiac sign of your mate (little stars like freckles). These things would be signs that are unchangeable, even if one changes the name (like in Katherine's case).
otherwise, the first letter would be nice, which could actually be written like the writing of the country of birth. so ᛖ for e and К for k.
How do you think the Mikealsons would react if Nadia was Elijah's daughter, and Damon still killed her and Katherine?
Assuming that Katherine still didn't get to keep newborn Nadia and Elijah probably didn't know of his child until it was too late?
Klaus would deem Katherine a liar and be like 'good riddance'. I think his reaction would be even more extreme than his initial reaction to his own child ("kill her and the baby, what do i care"). I also think he would be mad at Elijah because if he had fathered a child with Katherine, then it means he slept with his doppelgänger behind his back (assuming it happened in 1492).
Rebekah would also deem Katherine a liar. We ignore that Nadia would be a niece to Rebekah and Nadia's connection with Rebekah. I think she would be super jealous that Katherine got to have a child on her own (at least until she learns the details that she only knew her daughter for a short time). If she sees Elijah react to the loss of both his love and his child, she will comfort him and cry with him because he surely didn't deserve to lose his child so shortly after even learning of her. I don't think Rebekah would be sad about Katherine's passing because she doesn't care about her but she would support Elijah in his mourning.
Elijah would be devasted. If Nadia were his daughter, it wouldn't matter if he was still dating Katherine or not. She's the mother of his child which makes her family and no one hurts his family and lives. I'm not sure what you mean by Damon killing Nadia because, in canon, it was Tyler's bite that killed her. In any case, Elijah would ☠ everyone who held a role in their deaths.
