Yesterday I met a boy named JB. He turned 8 just 2 weeks ago and he had $25 in birthday cash. When his mom asked him what he wanted to buy, replied "nothing, I want to give it to the #homeless." So he and his mom took the bus to downtown Orlando and made their way around while he gave away his $25 birthday stash, $1 at a time. He gave without judgement, just with the hope that it would help in whatever way it could. He didn't just hand out those dollars, he stopped and talked to each person he gave one to. In other words, he treated each person like a new friend, not someone to be scared of or shunned. Physically, no lives were changed by those transactions, but emotionally, no greater investment has been made. It isn't the size of the gift, its the size of the heart giving it, and this kid has a huge heart! I will strive to practice compassion like this 8 year old boy, but I will likely fall short in comparison. Campaign to Rethink Homelessness goes viral Okay, I'll admit it... "If I was approached, I'd hand them a business card for Labor Ready," a local labor pool, he said. "Essentially the message was, 'Here — I work for mine. You can work for yours.'" I used to subscribe to the typical stereotypes, but then I took the time to get to know these people. If you held the same beliefs too, that's okay - as long as it stops today. It has been abandoned because one of the inhabitants was violently attacked and stabbed in the neck earlier this week. When I began working on the @RethinkHomeless Campaign several months ago, I set out to to have an impact on the lives of those struggling in our community. I didn't, not even for a second, think about the impact that they would have on me. One of those people in particular is Michael. Because of Michael, my life will never be the same. Michael is homeless and as you can see from his sign, he has #Huntingtons Disease (a hereditary death sentence), but he doesn't let life get him down. Most people, myself included, have judged him from afar because this disease causes him to have very abnormal involuntary movements which may appear as though he is perhaps be on some unimaginable drugs. Fortunately, I have had the opportunity to really get to know him. Because of this disease and how he has seen its progression in both his grandmother and his father, he is aware more than most that his days are numbered. He has seen what Despite this and the fact that he is homeless he chooses to spend those days not wallowing in pity, but rather being happy and grateful for each day that he has. Let me illustrate.. Yesterday, I made plans to spend this Sunday with Michael. Sometimes it is hard for me to locate him, so I asked him how I will find him. This was the conversation: Me: How will I find you on Sunday? Michael: I'll be at church, you can find me there. Me: What if I can't make it downtown until after church? Michael: Then just ask around. Ask people if they have seen a guy with a smile ear to ear. That'll be me. Today is Michael's 24th birthday, and he will spend it on the streets of Orlando.
