So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,
And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.
And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?
But nope, that's not the case:
Africa is struggling with heat waves and many countries on the continent lack the resources rich economies have to deal with rising temperat
Some selections from the article:
"The region has been experiencing some of the most intense heat waves in recent years, but in many cases they’ve been under-reported due to misconceptions about Africans’ ability to withstand them.
“Africa is seen as a sunny and hot continent,” said Amadou Thierno Gaye, a research scientist and professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. “People think we are used to heat, but we are having high temperatures for a longer duration. Nobody is used to this.”
"The Sahel, for instance, has been heating at a faster pace than the global average despite being hot already. Burkina Faso and Mali, both in West Africa’s Sahel, are among countries that are set to become almost uninhabitable by 2080, if the world continues on its current trajectory, a UK university study found. Its people are especially vulnerable due to shrinking resources, such as water, and poor amenities, and a dearth of trees and parks means there are few options for places to cool off."

"The popular YouTuber was arrested along with her business partner Jodi Hildebrandt last month and charged with six counts of felony child abuse after one of her sons was discovered with open wounds and duct tape on their limbs. Franke, 41, appeared via video from a Utah jail where she remains on a no bail hold at least until her next court appearance scheduled for Friday."
"Seeming to pin the blame for her behavior on her children, Franke went into horrific detail about how one of her six kids abused other children. She claimed that one of the Franke kids began looking at pornography at just three-years old.
"She provided no proof of her sickening allegations. The court went eerily silent after Ruby made the disturbing claims."
"Franke's husband Kevin, wearing a dark suit, sat at the table with his attorney looking straight ahead as his wife made the sickening allegations."

8 Passengers Update
SPRINGVILLE, Utah – Neighbors and an older sibling called authorities to Ruby Franke’s Springville home to try to get help for several child
KSL Article:
Springville Police visited Franke’s home 15 times between March 2019 and August 31, 2023. During at least five of those visits, police were assisting DCFS.
In April 2022, a Springville Police report reveals DCFS had been alerted that two children were “running out in the road unsupervised,” and the caseworker requested police drive through the area. The officer wrote they responded but did not see any kids in the street.
Months later, on Sept. 18, 2022, police responded to the Franke home again, this time at the request of Franke’s oldest adult daughter. According to the report, neighbors informed her that her younger siblings had been left home alone for days while Ruby Franke was in St. George with her friend.
Officers responding wrote they saw children in the home, but the children would not answer the door. “Officer’s seen the children on the phone and go upstairs where they were out of sight,” the report states.
When police approached neighbors who’d gathered outside, “They immediately started telling [us] about how the mother of the residence, Ruby Franke, will leave her children home for extended periods of time and go to St. George to spend time with her friend Jodi Hildebrandt,” the officer wrote.
“Everyone who came to the scene was very concerned about the children and them being left at home alone,” the report states.
The Definition of "Woke" (Is anyone else confused?)
I's going to be real right now. I'm so confused about what "woke" is supposed to mean. It feels like an umbrella term for how many contexts it is used in which makes the phrase "woke culture" make a least a bit a sense.
However, I struggle to understand why people don't like it. I get how people don't like "cancel culture" because it begs for accountability when in the end, if accountability is not given, it never actually effects people that need the wake up call the most.
But I'm not posting to talk about "cancel culture." I want to know why every person talks about something that is "woke" or "woke ideology" or "woke culture" they are always talking about pretty normal things. Here's a brief list of what I understand to be "woke," as defined by the local weirdos of the internet.
People of color in media (video games, movies, tv shows, commercials, etc)
People of color in acting, writing, or science
Women in science
The patriarchy acknowledged in any way, shape, or form (barbie movie; commercials, specifically Gillette razors even though they participate in the Pink Tax, etc)
Religions other than Christianity acknowledged in any way shape or form in media (commercials, especially Christmas time/adjacent commercials, etc)
Women with body hair (celebrities not shaving or forgetting to shave, women having hair on their face, etc)
Teaching black history at all
Teaching LGBGQ+ history
Teaching about discrimination and accurate history
Science (Statistics, Vaccines, Climate Change, etc)
Trans people existing (on any material plane)
Feminism (As in the belief that men and women are equal: Equal worth, equal consequences, and deserve equal rights, etc)
Men paying for the bill
Women paying for the bill
Men and Women splitting the bill in any way
Body positivity (Weight, disabilities, etc)
Different body types (men or women, on any plane of existence)
People with disabilities existing in media (any type)
ANY political ideology other than capitalism (socialism, communism, etc)
After thinking it over and making this list, I think a better word for "woke" would be anti-bigotry. Every time I come across someone who is anti-woke, they are almost ALWAYS bigoted in some way or another.
Twenty years ago it was “politically correct”. Twenty years before that, when I was a kid, it was “bleeding heart”. Since the 70s, conservatives have wanted a plausibly deniable, obfuscating euphemism for criticizing any push to right systemic injustices, because they could no longer come right out and say “bigotry is good”, at least in public. Which, like any other euphemism, rides the euphemism treadmill.
So yeah, OP’s absolutely right, “anti-woke” is pro-bigotry. It’s just not a new thing.
