Bilbo barely passed Old Took's record lifespan after having a supernaturally-life-extending ring for 60 years. which begs a question. what the hell did Old Took do
I have a theory that somewhere back up the line gandalf fucked a took. This sounds like complete crack but hear me out. The tooks are rumored to have “fairy blood” which in LOTR terms means either elves or maia. There is an ancestor who’s unusually tall and many of them are noted to live unusually long lives unless they meet with illness or injury, same as the numenorians did. They don’t hve extra pointy ears and elves don’t have a special interest in the line. But who DOES have a special interest in looking after tooks (and bilbo who is a took on his mother’s side/his adopted son frodo)? Gandalf. That dude is ALWAYS fussing over some silly little guy. He regularly brought the old took birthday presents.
Back in the day some bold hobbitess decided to climb that old man and ever since then gandalf has been looking after his line of tiny crazy bastards and no one will convince me otherwise.
The first chapter of The Hobbit is filled with some really excellent descriptions of hobbits and Shire-life. And more than any other part of Tolkien’s writing, it is written very strictly from a hobbit point of view. So anything said about Gandalf is written only with the worldly knowledge (or lack thereof) of the average resident of the Shire. Which means that any adventures Tolkien’s referencing here are hobbit adventures. Which is sort of fascinating because we know only a little bit about these pre-Bilbo adventurers.
When Tolkien introduces the Took family, he says: “Once in a while members of the Took-clan would go and have adventures. They discreetly disappeared, and the family hushed it up; but the fact remained that the Tooks were not as respectable as the Bagginses, though they were undoubtedly richer.” And then we have a few intriguing tidbits about three members of the Took family:
Belladonna Took (Bilbo’s mother) never “had any adventures after she became Mrs. Bungo Baggins.” (no mention of before she was Mrs. Bungo Baggins)
Isegar Took (Bilbo’s uncle) was “said to have ‘gone off to sea’ in his youth.” This was likely Lindon, since that’s the closest coast to the Shire. Isegar’s time in Lindon could very well be the familial origin of Bilbo’s obsession with elves.
Hildifons Took (another of Bilbo’s uncles) “went off on a journey and never returned." We have no idea if Hildifons died on his adventure, or just chose to remain wherever he was.
Now, Gandalf is never mentioned specifically in connection with these Took adventurers, but I think it’s extremely likely that he was involved in all of them. Not only does the quote about ”adventures would sprout up wherever he went“ tell us that Gandalf was responsible for previous hobbit journeys, but the fact that Gandalf was also good friends with the Old Took - the father of Belladonna, Isegar, and Hildifons - makes it even more likely that he was involved specifically with these adventurers.
Unfortunately (because, wow, would I love to read about the Took adventurers), Tolkien never wrote anything specific about this, or much about Gandalf’s pre-Bilbo time in the Shire.
