What is known about The Motley Folk, aka. the strolling players of the Inkworld

This post might be periodically updated every once in a while as I progress with the books!

In Inkspell

The Motley Folk has no permanent residence, they travel between Argenta and Lombrica.

The ruler of Lombrica, The Laughing Prince (now The Prince of Sighs) was the one who wasn't hostile to them. The Adderhead, ruler of Argenta now orders to hang a strolling player if they're caught within his land.

Their leader is The Black Prince, who excels at throwing knives. His name, according to Fenoglio, comes from the English historical figure, but the inhabitants of the Inkworld don't know that, and call him so by the colour of his skin and clothes. The name of his tame bear is unknown, but Fenoglio might have wanted to originally write him with a dog.

The strolling players mainly have their hair down, according to Minerva (Ch 19 - Birthday Morning) but that might risk losing strands as fairies like to tear some out if they have the chance.

There appears to be colourcoding between them: for example, fire-eaters wear red and black and tightrope-walkers wear blue and other sky colours.

The players usually have a stage name, like Cloud-Dancer or Sootbird and we don't know their civil names, if they have one at all (see The Black Prince or Dustfinger)

i have to reread Inkheart soon, to see if Cornelia Funke ever mentions more specific caveats to being a Silvertongue, bc as a non-practicing translator (on an official level, as of yet), i am very curious about how that works.

because i've been thinking about whether silvertongues can still work their magic when they don't or barely understand the language the book is written in. I think there was smth in there that bad pronunciation can also affect the outcome (as well as any speech impediment). can translation in itself affect the process? for example, if a book is originally written in Italian, then translated to German or English, and a Silvertongue reads from the translated text, does that have any side effects? or am i just reading too much into this world's magic system like that one person who asked Philip Pullman about how daemons are born and he answered with "I honestly don't know."

today's pleasant suprise for me was the realization that Dustfinger and Ryland Grace are voiced by the same actor in Hungarian (Soma Zámbori). this is of no real consequence to anything, i just find it fun (btw Dusfinger sounds more bitter than Grace, that's for sure)

#i did mention before that I love the hungarian dubbing of inkheart more than the original bc of how well it was done and bc of nostalgia #as for project hail mary i like the original better but the hungarian dubbing is superior to the hungarian subtitles #bc those were done by a different person than who did the dubbing script (some jokes are translated differently too)#aw man i wish i could find an online copy of inkheart w the hungarian voice soundtrack so that i could post clips here for some reason

in all honesty, i have yet to read Inkdeath in full (started it ages ago and didn't want the story to end back then so i didn't go further), as well as to read The Colour of Revenge (now that it's out and about), and,,,,it just so happens that i'll be mostly free after my conference is over this weekend....their siren call compels me.

#i'll bring my copy along w me. it's a 3 hr bus ride to get there anyways

according to an interview from last month, the BBC are curently revising the book. The plan is to turn it into a tv show.

hello hi that's me that was me :)

i feel like this interview is getting a liiiiittle bit overhyped currently... I mean, yes, Cornelia mentions the possibility of an Inkheart TV show and that, apparently, active steps are being taken to make it happen. ... But in the past years, that has happened a few times and it doesn't sound like we'll get anything soon, or maybe at all. What she says about it is:

"Right now, I have... The BBC is currently reserving the rights* for Inkheart, because they want to turn it into a TV show... Well! (shrug) It's going to look different than my version**. We can only hope that we'll find their version exciting as well."

Make of that what you will. It was really more of a short comment towards the end of the interview, definitely not the focus of it. She doesn't go into detail or sound overly enthusiastic about it, but who knows. Getting a TV show would certainly be something! Nitpicky translation notes under the cut.

had a fucked up dream i had a book that turned out could never be read again the same as the first time because each reread the characters became incrementally more aware that the events of the book had happened before and they were “reliving” it and i reread enough times that they became self aware, figured out they were in a book, acknowledged me as the reader, and some lost their minds or had existential crises, became violent to other characters or themselves, some begged me to never stop reading or they ceased to exist and others begged me to end it all stop reading and keeping them trapped in the endless loop of torment, and the literal only way to get the book back to its first run was to hand it off to someone else to read for the first time and for some reason i physically couldn’t tell anyone about it so i’d have to just hope whoever i gave it to would only read it once and i could never open the book again to check if they were okay and back to normal because i was terrified of fucking them all up again :(

i'm glad people are finding this fun as a concept and making references to stuff that this reminds them of but i really gotta express how bad of a nightmare this was for me. i had fallen in love with the original story and characters (though on waking i couldn't tell you the details), unintentionally warped their story beyond recognition, and found myself an unwitting god that could not provide mercy for some without doling torment to others. one of the characters started offing themselves every time i started another reread. stress dream doesn't even begin to cover it

I hate the fact that Orpheus is so goddamn well written. I despise the respect it wakes in me, I DESPISE that character and YET, yet, I just feel so much respect for how well written he is.

I love the fact that he wakes such a rage inside me. As a writer I can’t do anything except love that, and wish that one day I’d be able to write someone who wakes as much emotions in someone as he does in me. And I do NOT want to love anything about Orpheus. And now I love that I hate him. Checkmate I lose.

I don’t know if this is thanks to Cornelia Funke or the translator: but the way he SPEAKS??? So IN CHARACTER he WOULD have that vocabulary and he WOULD say it in that exact way. I can truly believe that his voice is as wonderful as it’s described. And I hate that. Fuck that guy, may he lose his voice.

The boys are partying like it’s 1360.

What’s going on here? Well the Piper has been playing the same song for hours and Basta has had enough. Why is he riding a snail? I tried to make this look like those medieval paintings, which often had giant snails in them. I just couldn’t resist.
