there is also his enthusiasm for the girlfriend option, the lack of it for the daughter scenario, and Madeline’s hint of jealousy. the lil’ touches. the lil’ remarks. the song lyrics. and lips. hands. more touches and those glances. this scene. dates and plus ones. saving each other. the constant seeking. comforting and the death march for love. sometimes a cigar is not just a cigar. it’s a wicked game that began as a little waltz. but now it’s turning into a tango with Hannibal/Clarice and Beauty/Beast vibes. the latter made even more obvious here. there is mutual interest. affection. heartbreak and anger. jealousy. suggestive hospital handholding. and declarations: “i think you’re very special.” “i have you. & you have me.” “i was just thinking about you…” “if anyone can give me a second chance, it’s you.” “together we were right.” “why not us?” “we can do this, you and i.” “she’s the one.” “our relationship.” “lizzie.” “you may have given up on us but i haven’t.” “when you love someone, you have no control.” (cf this) “you saved a man you hate to save me.” all these (and more i can’t find right now but if you can, feel free to add/link) complete with the occasional classic romantic close-up. even hardened, sociopathic criminals can see it. his blind spot. the coveting. the sticking together. here’s a less subtle moment w/ commentary. shipper wet dreams are made of these. plus there is also that whole red vs. tom thing, and hints of something similar with ressler. because red has feelings for her and she for him. it’s an unusual, dark & heavy love story in the making.
