i think there’s something to be said/thought abt in carol being the breadwinner in hlcrl bc they’re both so deeply entrenched in gender roles they don’t really actually fit into that hal being broke as shit is actually a strain on their relationship. hal feels like he’s failed as a man bc his card declines trying to buy carol a caramel macchiato. carol feels nothing when she steps up to pay she WANTS to feel angry that he’s not “doing his duty” but doesn’t actually care about spending the money she probably gets a rush off it lmfaoo a sense of superiority that she’s a woman but she’s Doing The Man Thing she’s a better man that hal could ever be but she can’t get into that rn

for me the main difference between hal and carol with this stuff is that hal has this idea in his head of the family and future he thinks he should want but doesn’t realize that getting it won’t fulfill him while carol is like. extremely self-aware that she doesn’t want any of that at all and knows for a fact she won’t be satisfied if she gets it but she thinks she’ll just have to tolerate it. whether it’s with hal or someone else. and hal’s idea of what he thinks he wants involves him being “a good man,” (not necessarily morally but like. societally) so he has this feeling of “i’ve failed as a man” when he’s so broke he can’t buy his girlfriend a coffee, even though like. deep down his brain is wired for fuckin plane stunts and space adventures and blasting shit with his magic ring and he doesn’t think that other stuff should matter. and he’s annoyed at himself for thinking it matters, but has also accepted that it must matter, and is annoyed at himself for not adhering to what’s expected of him. like there are multiple contradictory levels of self-irritation going on here. while carol knows what being “a good woman” entails and rejects it, and her expectation of hal being “a good man” is mostly just like…a leftover of the societal/gender roles she’s being forced into, not stuff she actually cares about in any way. so like you said she thinks she SHOULD be angry that he’s so broke he can’t buy her a coffee, but she isn’t, even though she might act like she is because she thinks she’s supposed to and thinks that’s what hal expects of her. even though hal would be totally fine and in fact may actually be relieved if she ever made it clear that she doesn’t care that much about it

one of the most interesting parts of their relationship to me is that neither of them are normal people who would be happy with the American Nuclear Family Marriage and Kids that society expects them to have but instead of realizing that their more antagonistic but still reciprocal dynamic as green lantern and star sapphire (where the expectations are completely different and they don’t have to worry or care at all about weird earth societal rules like who can afford to pay for coffee) suits them both more they just aggressively playact being normal and make each other miserable LOL

We could really do something with the original Star Sapphire as a take on second way feminism and Carol was accepted as queen in the guise of succeeding as a woman within a strong capitalist structure, and to kill the man who was seen as 'under her'. And Predator shows how her actual entrapment wasn't just her value within gender, but what class birthed from her- a brutality that just absolutely wreaked havoc whenever her class power was undermined.

And that to really free herself, Carol wanted to do away with both (the Predator-Star Sapphire abortion metaphor which was randomly thrown into two issues of Extreme Justice.) She wants to be beyond that and has not quite succeeded yet. (an adventurer- which goes back to bronze age, when she cuts her hair in the 90s, the whole 'I'm supposed to be a pilot too' from johns. And even Adams floating around this with the 'I'm a hero' stuff but it's not done well.)

And you can even look at the Geoff Johns retcon here of the idea of Zamarons wanting to entomb planets in a crystallization. Its not progress. Its just another form of control and oppression. There is something revelatory in Hal saying 'if you truly love something, set it free'. That does show both Hal and Carol suffer from earth social structures of gender and control. And he at least does not want either of them to be controlled under a system. (I still don't think its as strong as the original version but Hal saying that has always worked for me).

and I don't think anyone has ever quite nailed this yet but I don't think these themes are coincidental, even if not consciously by this frame work. Class and gender are just too prevalent and I think this weighs too heavily for writers to not have been at least dancing around this. We are close though and it can be such a good take on gender and class and how even on the top of the food chain of either, it traps you (Hal is this too but he is gender over class versus class over gender like Carol).
