Well, what can I say about this guy?
He’s odd, he’s different, he’s gentle and he’s kind, and I like him.
The time I started watching Watashi Ga Motete Dousunda, Mutsumi has always been on the background. He doesn’t stand out that much compared to the boisterous Nanashima or the competitive Igarashi or the cute Shinomiya or the perfect Nishina, but episode 3 changed everything.
In episode 3, Kae is invited to consecutive dates by the four boys, but if I actually noticed something, the only one who did asked her whether she was upset it Mutsumi. Also, he kept note to keep things slow (or maybe he doesn’t know that he’s in love with her) and, instead of making romantic advances to benefit him, actually picks an activity that he hopes could cheer Serinuma up.
Of course, he ended up accidentally flirting with her. He fed her with his chopsticks without noticing that it’s actually an indirect kiss, but Serinuma did, and I think she really did blush because she was embarrassed rather than overwhelmed.
I think, I ended up liking this guy, mostly due to how he represents comfort in a relationship. Mutsumi is understanding, patient, and kind, he accepts you the way you are and limits himself from being judgmental of a person, and let me tell you how rare it is to find someone like that these days. Very rare.
I hope that, rather than just fangirling over this guy, we could also pick up lessons and traits that he holds. Of course, Mutsumi has his bad traits such as how self sacrificial he is, but the good traits shines through. Rather than thinking of growing ourselves as someone ‘fun’ or ‘exciting’ or ‘someone who can make a good conversation’, I’d like to make a point that it is the most important to be someone patient, understanding, and kind. Will it make you stand out? No. But it will make you a better person, and a clear, considerate, and true goal will take you a long way. Remember, Mutsumi never fought for Serinuma’s affection, he never worried about the other guys taking Serinuma’s affection, he never made his competitors as an enemy, and he never worried about coming last. He holds himself to a true and altruistic goal of wanting to see the person he loved happy, and it carries him a long way.
With that, I close today’s rant with a reminder for everyone. Sometimes carrying and fighting for your own goal does carry you a long way. A few people view kindness and softness as a weakness, but I’d like to beg to differ. The prove? Well, who else if Mutsumi Asuma, after all, he proved us that kindness, softness, altruism, and patience can be turned into a weapon and shield that will guide you forward.
