abled ppl love the aesthetics of disability but they're so scared of actual disability

the angst of a panic attack or meltdown or seizure, the visual of scars and braces and crutches and nasal cannulas and hospital monitors beeping away, the idea of overcoming struggle and the limits of the human body. it's all beautiful whump for their gifs and fics and comics.

but the second they see someone needing an EMG or bronchoscopy, someone using a power chair and needing help getting into a building and advocating for their accessibility, someone using their inhaler, someone with stumps or disproportionate limbs, the mere idea of an ostomy bag or incontinence? you need to tag that, that's disgusting, that's triggering, nobody wants to see all of that.

fucking get with it. accept every aspect of it or don't even think about writing it.

this is going to be a generalized take, so please forgive me, but women are an underrated enforcer of femininity.

I’ve noticed this with hairdressers. multiple times I’ve gone to lady hairdressers and said “cut it all off,” and they’ve gone “hmm alright,” and basically just trimmed the split ends. meanwhile I can go to a dude and say “hey, can you make my hair slightly shorter?” and he’ll go “on it boss,” and shave me bald.

twice now, I’ve also had lady tattoo artists add pink to femme up a tattoo, despite that not being on the initial design.

god, also thinking about this brought back a memory. my mom once threw a fit because my shoes were “too masculine” (they were black women’s flats), saying that I’d upset my dad and ruin the formal event we were going to. I wore the shoes, my dad didn’t give a shit.

I dunno. it just feels like the misogyny is coming from inside the house sometimes.

I mean. people don't stop seeking power over other people just because they share a marginalization. women want social power just as much as men do, and it is way easier to focus on gaining power over other women who are at least in theory on the same playing field than it is to focus on gaining power over men who have an Advantage.

see also: women who are antifeminism activists, who trade personal social power in exchange for reinforcing and strengthening the overall gender hierarchy. they're just all the small pieces you're describing writ large and given some focus. but the pattern exists everywhere, because social power relations among humans are Eternal and also because social power is by definition not objective; it exists only within specific social contexts as a function of the estimation and judgement of the social participants.

Also the structure of gendered social roles is literally built on women teaching girls to be women and men teaching boys to be men. and then ruthlessly enforcing the 'appropriate' behaviour. Gendered socialisation is set up to enforce men's power as a class, but socially enforcing womanhood can only work when at least an appreciable number of women are willing to fully buy in and put their whole self into the enforcement.

women are always going to be the biggest enforcers of patriarchal femininity because men can only enforce as outsiders. Women, as you say, can gain by it more than men, but also it's part of what we're taught being a woman is - passing judgement on Improper Women to train towards Correct Feminity.

Men can ignore women and still be men. Women have to interact with women in gendered ways, and most ways to gain power in patriarchal feminine spaces (which is all contemporary female interaction) involve enforcing (and competing on) acceptable performance of Womanhood.

a good way to inspire yourself to do more is to see yourself as the wacky sitcom B plot character in your friends lives, "wouldnt it be funny to tell the friends in my phone about it." has gotten me to do anything from going to a festival (excelent) to wild camping (it went badly) (coastguard called) to trying to get the train to stonehenge (stonehenge costs money so i ended up just getting lunch in sailsbury, it was okay.) i bought a bicycle today and 20% of my reasoning was "itd be funny to surprise my roommate by coming home with a whole bike." . life is for living. and baby i live for the bit.
