When they all turn around they see the monsters have multiplied. It’s no longer just their own crab-selves stalking them — but who? Where did they all come from?  As these being approached, the camera twice focused on an individual, who looked nothing like anyone from the crew, and the only one with  an immediately visible characteristic— that remarkable hair …

"It’s the logic of a nightmare," the Doctor says. So these must be people from their own sub-conscious. Dream symbolism suggests that a monster approaching from behind could be about something your regret in your past. Could the Doctor’s mind be calling up any old regrets?
