One thing I love about Gale is that he is a middle-aged human. Actually truly human. In a world full of centuries-old elves and tieflings from hell and the children of literal gods, Gale is human. With greying hair and bad knees. I really appreciate that he is *not* a perfectly coiffed twenty-something with the bland appeal of a CW character. He's lived a life and survived his traumas and it shows. Unlike others in the party who for various heritage/ backstory/ magical reasons look forever 21, Gale looks his age. There's a maturity there which implies he's made his mistakes and had the chance to learn from them. I like that. I love that incongruity of a middle-aged level 1 wizard channeling the Weave with the finesse of a level 20 caster. I love the confidence with which Gale asserts that he is a good teacher- he *knows* this from lived experience, not just cocky confidence. I love the grey in his hair and the lines on his face and the creaks of his knees. He is human. And has lived long enough to be getting old. And it shows.

In a society that demonises getting old and looking even remotely over 25, I find Larian’s decision to make Gale look the way he does highly commendable.
As someone who is of a similar age to Gale and has made the conscious decision not to succumb to the pressure of getting Botox, fillers or cosmetic surgery in favour of aging gracefully (or, as Halsin would say, as nature intended), I find his wrinkles, his textured skin, the little streaks of grey in his hair, to be a breath of very fresh air (not to mention, extremely sexy).
I love that Larian have created a game whose message is to actively show that people can heal, find love, reinvent themselves, change careers, change their mind, and make life-long friends in later life. Because life certainly does not end the moment we get our first grey hair, or the moment we walk away from a long-term relationship, or the moment we decide that maybe we want something different than what we have become accustomed to. Because we can, and we have every right to want what’s best for ourselves.
And I love that Gale, in his humanity — in his being so much like one of us — embodies all of these different aspects: not only does he recover from the failing of a major relationship, he also has the opportunity to find love again, change career, make new friends, heal from his trauma, rebuild his magical prowess, and generally find new purpose and happiness in life.
If this isn’t the best advertisement for second chances, I don’t know what is.
