Allison’s eyes went wide for a few seconds before her father confirmed that he’d only been joking about actually using the ideas for their own house. “Things are pretty good,” she started, small smile forming as she continued on. “Work’s been keeping me pretty busy, but I’m enjoying it. Hopefully people will be a little bit smarter this Halloween, though.”

Between holiday hijinks and silly pranks, it was safe to say that October 31st wasn’t the paramedic’s favorite day of the year by any means.

“Good,” Owen said smiling at his daughter as she spoke about her life and how busy she was, “yep, ain’t that the truth. The medical life does keep us all busy.. but as long as you’re still enjoying the role, that’s the main thing.. And I wouldn’t count on it. Holidays bring stupid people together under one room or space. Some of my best surgeries have come from Halloween”

Owen was instinctively concerned that his daughter was hurt or injured in some way that needed police assistance, but a quick visual check showed she was okay, and that she would be taken to a hospital by ambulance anyways.. Owen was deeply embarrassed when the officer explained the reason why. Owen apologized for her actions and demanded her inside the house. As soon as the door was shut he turned his attention to his daughter.

“Just what were you thinking?”

He stormed off into the next room, expecting her to follow him. “I’m going to have to speak to your mom about this, but for now you are so grounded! I’m taking your cell phone and anything else that you like. You need to learn there are consequences to your actions young lady..” Owen said as he held out his hand to get her cell.. That’s when he spotted the fancy necklace she was wearing.. Maybe he had missed it but it looked expensive. “Is that yours?” He asked gesturing to his own neck to show what he meant. He sure hoped it was hers and that she would be able to provide evidence like a receipt to back her up.

Hearing her father apologizing to the cop and then demanding for her to get inside, Harper swallowed a lump in her throat. This was going to go even worse than she had imagined when she’d seen the cop pulling up behind her. The tone in Owen’s voice told her everything she needed to know about what to expect from him, and she thought about bolting out the front door and taking off, but knew that would only make things a thousand times worse. 

“I was just looking for something fun to do,” she said quietly with a shrug, knowing how horrible that excuse sounded.

Following him into the living room, she felt her face fall as he spoke about what her consequences would be. “For how long?” she asked, knowing there was no point in arguing with him. She’d done enough crap for the night to risk making things worse for herself. Pulling her phone out of her pocket she handed it over to him before noticing that he was asking her another question and pointing to his neck. She let out a slight gasp as she realized what he was talking about, and stuttered slightly as she tried to come up with a believable excuse for it. “I, um, y-yeah, it is. I, uh… I got it t-today at the m-mall. Why?”

Owen was glad when she handed over her phone without any fuss.. although he was prepared for it. “I don’t know how long, I will discuss that with your mother, okay?” He said as her phone ended up in his pocket for safe keeping. “Detention the other day and now this.. what is going on with you?” He asked as he moved to sit down, gesturing for her to sit beside him. Her story about the necklace seemed off but it was always a possibility. “I need to see the receipt for it, and then we are all good. That looks like it cost you a lot of money”

All Tricks & No Treats | Owen & Harper

It had been quite a day. First her friends had convinced her to go shopping with them. Even though she didn’t have money on her, she figured why not. Window shopping could be fun and might give her ideas for a Christmas wish list in the future. Then she’d spotted a necklace and earring set that she just had to have. She told her friends about it and they hatched a plan to help her get it. At first she wasn’t sure, but she decided it was worth a shot if they could get away with it. With three people keeping lookout, she managed to get the package open and slipped the items into her pocket, putting it when they got outside.

They commiserated with each other over the adrenaline rush and decided to amp it up even more that night. Which was why she found herself with those same friends, armed with toilet paper and eggs. It was almost Halloween, anyway. Everybody would be expecting this on Halloween night, but not this early. It was perfect. Until it wasn’t. They had done two houses, but as they hit the third house, they saw the cop lights behind them and the three took off. Unfortunately for Harper, she wasn’t as fast as her friends and was the one caught by the cop who gave chase.

Knowing she was screwed no matter what, she reluctantly gave the officer her name and address and sat in the back of the police car, dreading what was going to happen to her when they got to her house. Sure, she could have been placed under arrest and maybe that would have been worse, but facing her parents was definitely not going to be fun.

When they arrived at the house, she didn’t think about the jewelry she had on that wasn’t there before she left the house that day. She wasn’t thinking about anything but what she was going to say when her mom or dad answered the door and saw her standing there with a cop.

“Are you Mr. Hunt?” the officer asked as the door opened. “I caught your daughter and some of her friends throwing eggs and toilet paper at some houses on the other side of town. I’m letting her off with a warning this time because she cooperated when I stopped her, but next time she won’t be so lucky.” 

“Dad, I–” she began, but stopped, knowing there was no way she was talking her way out of this one.

“I get what you’re saying, but I still care sweetie. I still enjoy this holiday”

“Do you think I went a little over the top?”

“You don’t have a pair of witch legs sticking out from underneath the house, and there’s not a huge cauldron on the front porch, so I’d say you’re still a bit on the conservative side compared to some of the stuff I’ve seen on a few calls recently.” That was definitely a good thing.

“Oh the family must be thrilled” Jo says, shaking her head jokingly.  “We still have time to get some stuff up, thankfully. And by we I mean me and the kids. You know how Alex is with this stuff.”

“Nope, just me I’m afraid.. A little too excited for this. You should come and see the house and bring Alex. It may inspire him?”

“Oh, that’s too bad Hunt. Hm… I can think of several other ways to inspire him that don’t involve leaving our house.”

“I think we should get back to work now”

“I have to tell your Mom, 100000000%. Or she would ground me, young lady. You don’t want me grounded. You won’t like it”

“Ew, dad, TMI alert. Besides if she doesn’t find out about it from anybody else then she won’t have to know at all. Problem solved.”

“Nope, not problem solved.. This is far from solved. Your mother needs to know, and you’re going to tell her. I’ll be there with you, but this one is all you, kid”

“I mean, you did a good job and everything, but does anyone other than little kids really care about Halloween anymore?”

“I get what you’re saying, but I still care sweetie. I still enjoy this holiday”

“Do you think I went a little over the top?”

“A week? Really? For one day of detention. Overkill much?”

“Fine. Whatever. Have it your way. Can we just… not tell mom about this please. I’d rather not face her wrath.”

“Kinda getting ahead of yourself there, aren’t ya? It’s not even Halloween yet.”

“You might be right.. But there’s no harm in making it more of a thing, you know? Celebrate it more”

“The whole house is decorated in Halloween stuff. Spent the past hour or two putting it all up. I think it looks absolutely great”

“Go home Callie, I’m sure we got this covered.. I’ll wing it. How hard can ortho be, hm?” Owen laughed knowing it wasn’t so easy just to cover it like that. He could reset bones quite easily but anything more advanced would call for that orpho surgeon. “I’ll page you for anything major, okay? Go get some rest”

“You think it’s that easy?” Callie questioned, shaking her head and laughing slightly. “Honestly… that sounds like a great idea. And if I don’t answer, you can always page Link. I’m sure he’ll be around. Thanks, Owen. I owe you one.”

“Oh it’s so easy!” Owen laughed at her. “You don’t owe me anything, it’s what we do. I’ll call link if I can’t get through to you. Go off and enjoy the rest of your night”

“I question the parents in this particular case.. I mean, are they even parenting?” Owen asked as he heard his child talking to one of her friends as to why she had detention. “I don’t know where we went wrong”

“Oh, and you’re grounded too. L.OL”

“I gotta go,” Harper said into the phone in her hand, setting it down before turning to face her father. “Eavesdrop much?” she asked him with a scoff. “That was supposed to be a private conversation.”  

“Seriously? You listen in on my phone calls and use that information to punish me. Seems kinda unfair, man.”

“Don’t be silly the school would have just told us. This doesn’t change the fact that you’re grounded for about a week. No phone or tv. You need to learn young lady”

“Okay.. fine I’ll make it five days”

“what i would do for a day off. ah well, a surgeon’s work is never over, i guess.”

“one of my teachers got upset today because a friend and i were talking while she was teaching. when she told us we were interrupting her lesson, i told her she was interrupting our conversation. and that’s how i ended up in detention.”
