Headcanon: all the pearls on Homeworld are jerks.
They’re programmed to be loyal and subservient to their masters, and it works and they’re usually completely in awe of whoever they’re made to serve - but put them in a room with each other, with gems who’re their equals, and all hell breaks loose. Towards gems of their own kind, they’re catty, manipulative and even violent, when no one’s looking. They’ll often gang up on easy targets, like runts and defectives, and make their lives miserable.
However, despite everything, they’re also often forced to spend a lot of time together and more often than not, this leads to close, family-like relationships tying large groups of pearls together. They look out for each other when the system won’t.
Our Pearl basically has a very large, very dysfunctional family back home and she only misses them because she’s forgotten how horrible everyone is.
Different pearl types tend towards different behaviors and powers. Peach pearls are very weak, but also far less aggressive and more down-to-earth than other pearls. Blue pearls have stronger magic and tend to be leader-types. White pearls are the most common, as they’re easy to grow, yet still function well. There’s 12 types in total.
Not pictured: black pearls. They’re the rarest and the most powerful, and they’re the only pearls who have ever been able to work their way up the hierarchy to a point where they own themselves and are equal to regular citizens. They’re also mind-numbingly boring, according to other pearls.
White pearls, peach pearls and pink pearls still carry the pink diamond symbol in memory of their lost leader, whom they’ve been told was assassinated long ago. They’re divided equally between Yellow, Blue and White Diamond’s forces.
They’re the gayest gems of all. Their pre-programmed devotion to certain higher-ranking gems often lead to romantic attraction. They’re also notorious for trying to form dysfunctional relationships with each other.
Pearls as a race have been discontinued by Homeworld and replaced with peridots and corals, who each specialized in different aspects of the pearls’ purposes. However, they’re still a very common sight on Homeworld, as they’re not usually used in battle and thus get to continue their lives indefinitely in safety.
There’s a disproportionate amount of defective pearls, compared to other gem races, which are easily distinguished by their oval, flat or otherwise misshapen forehead gems. This was one of the reasons for their discontinuation.
