health isn't a virtue.
people still go around acting like they've done something good in order to be able bodied and healthy. that they worked for it, that it's due to their moral fibre or good upbringing or self control. they genuinely, on some level, believe that they are a good person solely based on the strength of their physical abilities. they will resist the fact that it is largely down to chance that they were able to maintain such health. whatever they think they've built from scratch, the building blocks were already handed to them. not because they're more worthy of it, just by luck. and they really think they're worth more based on that sheer luck. i've met disabled people worth a hundred of the healthiest ableds alive.
I got algo-served this weepy little rant about how this woman doesn't trust/feel comfortable around "older trans women" (i.e. ones who transitioned later) because they're too male socialized or whatever. And part of the argument was literally that they haven't been "humbled enough" (by which she means sufficiently abused by their peers) and so lack an important kind of humility. And it strikes me that humility, when articulated a certain way, is a virtue of the panopticon in which women can pull each other down and self-surveil when one of them starts "getting above her station." Self-confidence and assertiveness then become not virtues of the self-sufficient and actualized person, but evidence that one thinks too highly of oneself. And it's part of this perverse worldview where the epistemic/political privileging of trauma becomes a means of its reproduction: the violence becomes a needed corrective to a deformed personality. But Plato has this right too: a horse doesn't become better through beatings. It's just the ressentiment version of calling someone a brickhon.
Every one of you that isn't a trans woman, listen for just a sec.
Have you seen The Matrix? Do you remember the film? Keanu Reeves, leather trenchcoats, bullet time, all that jazz? If you haven't or if you need a refresher, go watch it. It's 2hr16min long, I'll wait. I'll be here when you get back.
Done? Great flick, right? Enjoy your popcorn? Cool. Alright. Now hear me out.
Y'know how the Agents could turn over anyone who isn't Unplugged™️? How every faceless person in the movie could become someone intent on hunting down and killing trans women Neo and the rest of the unplugged humans? You are that person. Society will use you and your blind spots to harm trans women.
Y'know how towards the end of the movie, Cypher betrayed everyone so he could plug back in and enjoy the relative comfort of a life without knowing about the Matrix? You can do that. You always have that option. Society will always reward you for turning on trans women.
You can also just be an Agent, full stop. You can make it your life's work to ruin the lives of trans women, and Society will reward you for it.
I can't be any of these things. I can't plug back in. I can't go back in the closet. I can't unsee the way me and my sisters are treated. My only two options are live and fight, or die.
I feel like I have to treat everyone around me like one of the three things you can be. I cannot and will not feel safe around you until you prove to me that you are Unplugged™️. And to be unplugged is to fight.
You have to make your own life more uncomfortable by actively fighting transmisogyny even when there are no trans women around you. If you can't do that, you are not safe for me.
Living outisde of The Matrix is hard. It's uncomfortable. You need to be ready, willing, and able to deal with that discomfort. Otherwise, you're just an agent of the system waiting to happen.
There is no way to be passive and to be safe for trans women. You have to be a traitor to the system.

i don’t think antizionists should continue to refer to a “global rise in antisemitism” in discussions around israel when the only proof of such a thing occurring comes from organizations that openly admit to inflating their antisemitism data by counting any instance of anti-israel criticism or protest as “antisemitism”.
it is counterproductive & harmful to validate an intentionally inflated hate crime statistic when it is being used to provide rhetorical cover & misdirection from israel’s crimes of ethnic cleansing and apartheid.
when somebody brings up an alleged rise in “global antisemitism” related to student protests and political action around palestine, question what concrete proof there actually is that this “rise” in antisemitism is really occurring & provably resulting in increased danger & harm to jewish people. question why all the so-called ‘studies’ tracking antisemitism admit to conflating sloganeering like “from the river to the sea” or “no zionists” with things like gun threats to synagogues as part of the same ‘statistic’. this racist equating of political condemnation of israel with actual violent threats is what you are allowing to slide past you through the door when you take every claim zionists fearmonger about at face value.
It's tricky because there is both a lot of overt antisemitism, with white supremacists growing more bold since Unite the Right, and such an extensive list of covert antisemitism, which is primarily baked into the most widespread conspiracy theories: predator elites (but not caring about actual pedophile rings or institutions with constant exposés cough cough), rich Jews funding antifa/abortion/trans movments/DEI/etc, but most institutions that track these situations are not really reputable--and their ability to address any of this is nonexistent.
Navigating left wing spaces over the last 15 years I've heard often the phrase "leftist antisemitism" and while there are certainly instances with interpersonal antisemitism, particularly the covert type, it was impossible to really discuss those without aligning yourself with those who meant it as "anti-zionist" or even simply "sympathetic to Palestine". Jewish Currents did a really good investigation into the reports of a "rise" of antisemitism and it reminded me so much that it shocked and disgusted me when around 8-10 years back I saw a report come out that had a not-small number for "left wing" antisemitic extremism. I was so nervous, had people really pivoted so hard into antisemitism? Then their examples were nearly all along the lines of 1. people saying "free Palestine" 2. graffiti with swastikas a nazi said that antifa had made and media believed him 3. displaying a Palestine flag
What's additionally troubling is that there IS a lot of antisemitism and I would argue that it *has* risen in the last 10 years, not to mention the real instances of antisemites getting platformed for being critical of Israel (cough Jackson Hinkle), or people knowingly or ignorantly wielding antisemitism to criticize Israelis, but these types of antisemitism that's happening are NOT what these orgs concern themselves with. They don't care that Musk did a nazi salute. They don't CARE that nazis are holding talks on campus and when a nazi gets shot we all are expected to collectively grieve the loss of his shit-spewing. They don't CARE that universities were under actual threat from proud boys. They don't CARE that a swastika flag got unfurled at a Sanders rally to protest him. They don't CARE that Jewish politicians are accused of funding baby snatching rings. They don't care that zionists--Jewish and non-Jew alike--are endangering and isolating and physically attacking anti-zionist Jews. And so we are forced to struggle to talk about this REAL antisemitism.
I will never ever ever forget that my old uni had a massive nazi problem and myself and others were put on hit lists and so we held demos and talked to reporters and pleaded with admin and fought these nazi bastards in the street and then the moment we sign a letter standing with Palestinians we are shunned and removed from positions or orgs and kicked out of spaces and made out to be the source of student harm.
Actual antisemitism is IGNORED by these orgs, and anti-zionism is punished. There IS real danger, but these places are not where we are protected, and most of them are contributing to why we are in danger in the first place.
I grew up in the city with the largest terror attack on Jews at my neighbor's synagogue--I know what a rise in antisemitism looks like, and the fact that those murders are trotted out to condemn Palestinians and not to highlight a rise in white supremacist power tells you everything you need to know about what is and isn't a "threat"
It is DEEPLY infuriating that these orgs' rancid credibility makes people doubt instances of actual antisemitism, reinforcing that zionists are the only "reliable" source talking about it, when they are even LESS trustworthy than people who lump all Jews in with zionism. After all, why not conflate them? Israel says we are synonymous, zionists say we are synonymous. We are reaping what these fuckers sowed.
A line-by-line reassessment of the organization’s data illuminates the flaws in its methodology.

Coming back to this again in the wake of the Bondi Beach shooting. Long-time Palestinian activists have been nothing but immense allies and comrades in the fight against antisemitism, with Muslim communities always showing up for us, as was the case of Ahmed al Ahmed on the beach that day.
What creates issues for us is that for a lot of newcomers, folks who are ill-informed, or even those who are being a bit warped into antisemitism in their fight against Israel, acknowledging actual antisemitism is somehow agreeing with Israel, and this pushes people into one of two camps, both of which enable Israel's message:
Either Israel is entirely full of shit and we need to turn a blind eye to antisemitism and antisemitic rhetoric which not only endangers and isolates Jews, but allows Israel to insist they are the only ones who care/can protect us/etc, or
They were right about this, and now there is sudden doubt about what Israel is right and wrong about.
This is why we MUST talk about rising antisemitism--it is essential to an anti-zionist playbook.
It is crucial that we understand why people are afraid, why they are led to believe that the diaspora is not safe--because it isn't--and only then can we actually dissect the issues and deradicalize folks.
It is also crucial that we understand why antisemitism is on the rise. Who is doing this? What are their messages? What sort of overt violence is happening? What sort of covert conditioning is happening?
Because something we have GOT to be open about, is that antisemitism is rising in CONCURRENCE with other bigotries rising, because the single greatest perpetrator of antisemitic violence is the single greatest perpetrator of Islamophobic violence and misogynistic violence and racist violence and homophobic and ableist and transphobic violence: white supremacists and their agents.
To fail to address this fails Jews but it also fails everyone. The diaspora is not safe for me for a half dozen aspects of my identity, and it is not safe for anyone else either, as long as white supremacy is allowed to continue to rise. The diaspora is not made dangerous by sheer happenstance, it is the enabling of white supremacists that endangers us. And Israel is not the solution to this, it is an agent of that same violence being sold to us as protection. Their propaganda would not be effective if there was not some truth to their lies--we have no excuse not to engage with what is true and offer alternatives.
"Plenty of women have met the "male feminist" who can quote bell hooks but will use those quotes to speak over you. Plenty of people of color have met the white antiracist who was all for Dr. King's dream until people of color start asking white people to make actual sacrifices for racial justice. Ego can undermine even the best of intentions, but often, when things like this happen- when someone we trust as an ally ends up taking advantage of their position and then turning against the principles they once claimed to fight for when that abuse is discovered- we find that the intentions were never that great in the first place.
Whiteness and masculinity are two identities that are built almost exclusively as the inverse of that which their identities oppress. Where whiteness is smart, Blackness is dumb. Where whiteness is successful, Blackness is a failure. Wear masculinity is strong, femininity is weak. Wear masculinity is analytical, femininity is emotional.
Identities that are oppressed and constrained by whiteness and/or masculinity struggle to free themselves from their oppressors in order to develop independence. The greatest risks to identities of color or Womanhood and a white supremacist patriarchy are the white supremacy and patriarchy that seek to control them. Therefore, the amount of safety, security, and freedom that people of color and women (and other nonmale identities) are able to obtain lies in the extent to which they can gain social, political, and financial independence from patriarchy or white supremacy.
Whiteness and masculinity are threatened both where their station or behavior begins to approach that expected of Blackness and femininity, and where Blackness or femininity strays from its expected role and no longer serves as a direct contrast to whiteness and masculinity. These dual constraints are important to realize, because while whiteness and masculinity are the two most powerful identities and a white male patriarchy, they are all so wholly dependent on the identities they oppress."

We Are The Ocean

collar: merino wool, silk, steel cones, leather. ravenstail patterns, crochet, basketry twining technique. Woman as a Wave shawl: merino wool, silk, cedar bark. chilkat and ravenstail patterns, crochet, basketry twining technique. Tidal apron: merino wool, silk, leather, steel cones. chilkat and ravenstail patterns.
“We Are the Ocean is an ensemble comprised of a collar, apron (entitled Tidal), and shawl (entitled Woman as a Wave). The collar and bottom edge of the shawl are twined using a basketry technique to bring delicacy to the regalia, made specifically to emphasize the wearer’s feminine essence. In place of the sea otter fur that traditionally lines the top of Chilkat and Ravenstail weavings, the merino weft yarns were used to crochet the collar and shawl’s neck lines, bringing forward and incorporating a European craft practiced by both my maternal (Tlingit/Filipino) and paternal (German) grandmothers. The high neck of the collar gives tribute to the Western aesthetics that have forever influenced the Indigenous cultures of our lands; with grace, we embrace that which cannot be undone, and use our new form to be better. The apron’s pattern was studied and graphed from an old Tlingit cedar bark basket, and represents the tides of our lives, as our lessons continue to arise in a revolving cycle, yet made of new debris. The repetitive pattern of the shawl represents the infinite connectedness of our sisters, mothers, aunties, and daughters. Blue lines break up inverted rows, representing the “past,” “present,” and “future,” acknowledging these concepts as irrelevant constructs that fall away when we commune with the Divine. The entire ensemble is worn to evoke the innate spirit of the Woman as an ethereal deity, that resides within us all.”
