Can we just take a minute to think about how, if I were to put up an identifiable nude picture of myself, on my own blog, taken in my own bathroom, it could come back around an ruin my life? let’s just think about how, no matter what I do with my life - become a teacher, a lawyer, a scientist, a professor - a photograph of my naked body could render largely null and void the value that others would be willing to give to me. It would not matter if I were a virgin - it would not matter if I meant them for a lover’s eyes only - it would not matter whether or not I did it for money - my own naked body could actually ruin my life and my work. Can we just think about that? That is powerful, and not in a good way.

Systemic Violence

I alluded to this in The Tyranny of Choice and made a really dumb unsubtle joke about it in VIDEO GAME MORALITY PLAY but the reason why I’m so irritated by games that point the fingers at players, indicting them for “enjoying" “killing" is because in most game contexts, especially war, murder is not the result of individual decisions but bigger social and cultural systems that endorse and encourage and excuse violence. Games are systems too, and shooters are ones that enforce violence, because there’s literally no other way to interact with the world. For a game then to point at the player and scream “murderer" is reminiscent of a culture the decries fictionalized violence as entertainment but supports militarism to further its interests abroad, violent repression of peaceful protests, and legislated oppression.

One of the points Spec Ops makes specifically is something along the lines of, “you’d never kill someone in real life, so why do you want to in video games: isn’t that messed up?" But you actually might kill someone in real life and there really are contexts in which it is okay to kill certain kinds of people. Violence against minorities, for instance, isn’t random: there’s an entire culture reinforcing the notion that some lives just aren’t worth as much as others, and this happens because they are demonized, always the perpetrator and aggressor even when they are a literal murder victim. This should be obvious without even so much as a mention of Trayvon Martin. Video games that make the game all about a grizzled protagonist’s moral decline have a sort of starry eyed idea that they’ll make killing “meaningful," and that will force players to confront something. The reality is the murderer doesn’t need to confront anything, because they were supported by a system that endorsed their violence.

This makes me incredulous when games point the finger at players. Though the player commits the actual act, it’s the game that mechanically rewards and demands and endorses killing. If the player is guilty, it’s almost like saying that violence is only the result of lone men making bad decisions, the responsibility entirely individualistic, and there aren’t all these other more powerful forces that are determining what’s right and wrong, whose lives have value, and who gets to make decisions in the first place. Intentionally or not, the argument of this player accusation is that individuals are solely responsible for violence.
