I'm so proud of myself today. I've been struggling massively with spending evenings alone while my spouse is at work. Today I managed to reach out to people and find a friend to hang out with for the evening.

Reaching out can be so hard to do, and it took so much willpower to make myself actually do it. But, because I did, instead of dreading the evening, I'm now looking forward to spending time with someone I cherish 💖

In the car this morning, my friend suddenly mutters out loud "I can probably do it my damn self" and when I ask what he's talking about, he refuses to tell me anything more than "it would be a surprise... For you"

IDK where else to vent about this. I put so much work into helping my friend plan, purchase, and wrap gifts for a 30 days of 30 for their husband/my best friend, where he gets 1 gift every day for 30 days leading to his birthday. They're supposed to be sending videos when I can't be there when he opens, especially if it's a gift I bought him. I haven't received a video since probably around day 5 (it's day 19) and they adjusted the days without telling me, so I keep getting mixed up on if he's supposed to be getting one from me that day or not. I'm feeling hurt and frustrated, and don't know how to tell them that without it becoming a whole thing.

I don't want to put this on him, because it's supposed to be about making him feel loved and cherished by those around him. It's not about me, and I get that, it's just hard because I contributed so much to this, and I'm not getting to see the outcome.

You know that actually is the purpose of a lawn? They started as a trend of the French monarchy - the ones revolutionaries beheaded for being self indulgent assholes.

It exists purely as a status symbol that says, “I have land but I don’t have to use it for anything productive. I can invest time, money and resources in maintaining an entirely useless crop on land I’m not farming just because it looks pretty.”

This is actually really interesting because back in the 1950s and 60s in Australia when we started getting large waves of Southern European migrants one thing the Italians and others would often so is buy a little suburban home, then tear out the ornamental flower beds and lawn and useless trees and plant fruits, vegetables, grapes and even olives. It was considered completely scandalous by their Anglo-Saxon neighbours because lawn was considered an aspirational thing and the ideal was to go from not needing a kitchen garden and having an ornamental garden to show how well you were doing.

Because like damn guys, sometimes I just don’t wanna deal with super deep narratives about identity and misogyny. This reminds me, if y'all haven’t heard of therapyforblackgirls.com please visit if you need a therapist. You can search by mental health need, location/distance, insurance, etc. I believe there are some that provide a sliding scale payment method for those without insurance.

If you’re not quite ready to make the jump, there is a podcast you can listen to as well as articles and links to help answer some of your questions about mental health and/or therapy.

The purpose, as I understand it, is to provide a place where black women can go to find culturally sensitive therapy. Some specialize in family/couples as well.
