Normally I would put this in the comments but it’s too long apparently. Here be book spoilers. (Please someone correct me if I screwed up some details.)
Rough timeline: (It’s already been implied that the timespans of this have been changed for the show)
- Lestat and Gabrielle leave Paris to search for Marius and other vampires. They leave Nicki in Armand’s care.
- for about a decade they travel around and Lestat becomes a graffiti artist, just that the graffiti are fan letters to Marius, asking him to get in touch
- Nicki finally kills himself (“with a little help from others”)
- Gabrielle leaves Lestat because she’s tired of searching for ghosts and enters her girl boss era
- having lost everyone he loves, Lestat takes a depression dirt nap
- Marius finally takes pity on him (plus is probably tired of having his name put on walls across Europe) and digs him up
- Lestat spends 2-3 nights on Marius island. Marius tells him his story and shows him Akasha and Enkil.
- Marius turns around for 2 minutes to take care of some business with his mortals only to find that Lestat went and played Nicki’s violin for Akasha and Enkil. Akasha gives him his blood, but does not truly wake.
- Marius saves Lestat from Enkils rage and makes Lestat promise not to tell anyone of the things he has told Lestat. To avoid provoking Enkil further, he sends Lestat off. Lestat goes to America to care for his dying father who has gone to New Orleans to flee the revolution - this has obviously been changed for the show. They do not see each other again until the rise of Akasha.
As for why Marius does not save Armand - it takes him at least a century to recover from the burning. By the time he finds him again, Armand is a full blown coven master of the children of satan. He sees him without Armand noticing, but can of course not read his mind. I think this is sometime before Lestat brings down the Paris coven, at a time when Armand is truly “Satans fool” (aka holding on to the coven structures for dear life in a trauma fueled stasis). What Marius sees of Armand pretty much convinces him that he is way past saving (I think he watches him hunt?). The whole situation is a mix of guilt, anger and false assumptions on Marius’ part - so classical Marius.
They also do not see each other again until the rise of Akasha.
As to his whereabouts, he spends a long time after the burning in the shrine in the alps with those who must be kept, to recuperate. Bianca is with him and leaves him only once they start traveling around Europe again. (She’s a saint btw for staying as long as she does, they are NOT a good match)
After that he relocates every century or so, keeping Akasha and Enkil savely hidden. He’s on his island in Greece in the 18th century and somewhere in the Arctic in the 20th century when Akasha wakes.
