@amandapalmer is in the top tier of musicians I love... I adore her as much as I do David Bowie, and if you know me, that's some serious love.
A week ago I dreamt we hung out (oddly forgot about that dream until today). I felt upon waking that the dream was mostly about how I was starting to live the life of my dreams, that of being an artist adding something to the world, to the conversation, giving people joy through what I create. I felt such a sense of accomplishment because of that dream! I really look up to Amanda as a human being, artist, and business woman. I've met her a few times, though my first encounter with Amanda was back in the early days of the Dresden Dolls, when a friend invited me to participate in the Brigade as a living doll. I got to wander around back stage, got a badge and a handshake from hers truly after the show, and just thought she was an all around cool person. I had no idea who was Amanda was back then, but I was taken with the music and started my fandom as a collaborator and participant. When I got to see her and Neil at the Aladdin Theater years later as VIP to the show (a la Amanda and Neil's first Kickstarter together) and to hug her there, it felt like full circle since that was where I had first encountered her.
My sweetie had been hanging out downtown this Saturday morning and texted me to call him when I woke up from my late slumber... He convinced me to come down and have sushi with him and go to a film at the Living Room Theater. For some reason Powell's was beckoning me instead of the movie, but we went to the movie nonetheless. As soon as the movie was over, I opened my phone and saw a post a friend shared telling me Amanda was at Powell's doing a ninja gig... I had no idea, and suddenly my intuitive pull to Powell's made sense. But it should have by all rights been over fifteen minutes ago, based on the post. My heart sank... My intention had been to go to Powell's right after our movie, would I have just missed her?
Jefferson and I walked the two blocks to Powell's and sure enough Amanda was still out front, giving hugs, signing things. Within fifteen minutes I got a hug, telling her two things I had wanted to say for a long time. "You are so beautiful and inspiring." I feel like I've had an incredible number of opportunities to see Amanda's real life integrity, hard work, community spirit, and business savvy in action. But I am shy and I get fumbly around people I admire so much. I am happy that I didn't have too long to overthink the encounter and was able to muster the courage to say that little bit. If I had known just a half hour before that she'd be there, I'd probably have written her a note, but I am happy for this short encounter. The only thing I wish I had said in addition is how much I respect how hard she works. She is relentless and lives her ideals with such ferocity and dedication. I'm sure she has hard days, too, but it's obvious she exceeds most people's willingness to plug into the life force of the universe.
I was reading a book about manifestation today that calls out experiments you can do to prove that the support is there. One is to tell the universe you want a sign, and you want it within 48 hours. Mark down the time and fully expect it! Well, I started to do this, then I laughed and realized that the universe was already ahead of me. That "chance" encounter with Amanda was a little jolt of electricity for me. The message I got from it was, "No excuses! No limitations." She made a stage where there was none, standing on a metal railing and having her fans hold her feet steady while she played a long song on a uke that belonged to an audience member. This is probably not a thing to her, but it spoke great volumes for me. She has this uncanny ability to trust, receive, and see opportunities where other people would see obstacles. She was in town for a house party from her Kickstarter, but she could have chosen to lay low and stay in a hotel or try to get some peace and quiet... Instead she decided to go out and be among her fans, inspire people to buy poetry, and give free hugs. When you are an Amanda Palmer fan, you get connection, inspiration, electricity.
I was so delighted to run into her yesterday, and to be reminded that we can all be blazing flames of light, creativity, and love. Thanks for showing up in a manifested hug yesterday, Amanda. You are a human being, too, and I don't want to put you on a pedestal, but at the same time you really are a beautiful angel who inspires so many people to live their lives artistically. It's not always easy, but it's so, so worth it. I'm excited to be a part of that club, and it helps to have such a fabulous role model.
