Careful with understanding statistics

Putting this out there again because politicians keep manipulating people with statistics, and some of you still don't seem to get it.

For example. Say hypothetically, there are 100 shootings in Texas per month, and 1 in France. But statistics show that more people die from gunshots in France every year than in Texas. That does NOT mean that there are more shootings in France. It means maybe in a whole year there have been perhaps 12 shootings in France all year, and 1200 in Texas, but the 12 shootings in France were gunshots to the heart, and most of the 1200 shootings caused non-lethal injuries. It may also mean French people have amazing aim and always shoot to kill, whereas Texans can't aim for the life of them.

Understand statistics. Don't let people manipulate you.

I don't know if this is interesting but I'm from Porto, Portugal and JK Rowling was an English teacher here and wasn't born around the time she was here but i know people actually met her at the time before the fame and they told she had a very sad look and looked tired and even heard some abused she suffered from her husband at time, i feel so sad for her especially considering she use to live where I'm from and she created a work that i love , at least i think for her time in Portugal despite sad was enough to give inspiration for Harry Potter like the Hogwarts robes that i think have some inspiration from Coimbra university students and of course the dictator Antonio Oliveira de Salazar for Salazar Slytherin.

Of course I find this interesting thank you for sharing. I knew she was a victim of abuse but I had no idea she was an English teacher in Porto, Portugal. I even checked and it said that apparently she did get inspiration for Salazar Slytherin and the robes from Coimbra University. How cool. I love learning new things everyday.

Also this made me appreciate her even more. It’s incredible how people will spread the most absurd lies and misinformation about her but when it comes to REAL information that is public they turn a blind eye. Insane.

JKR really has changed more lives than I could possibly fathom. Leaving aside her wonderful writing and the charitable causes that she personally puts her money directly into, her mere presence in Edinburgh literally turned this city around. The tourist money that Harry Potter brings into Edinburgh is uncountable and invaluable. Half the kids on my MSc course chose Edinburgh uni because they loved HP. 15 years after the last movie and 19 years after the last book, I still see massive throngs of tourists in cloaks wavings wands, every time I walk down south bridge. Edinburgh was a deeply troubled place in the 90s but we've seen huge improvements in all areas from public transport to drug rehabilitation to homeless shelters, in no small part due to the tourism funds that her books have brought to this city.

doing my semi-annual harry potter re-read. got to the bit where fred made a joke on the radio about snape having greasy hair. and it stretches the imagination a bit, right? because why would he do that, when so few people would get the joke?

but then I remembered that, canonically, nearly everyone in the country goes to hogwarts. imagine trying to have a functional society when almost every person in your society had the same ~6 teachers. minerva mcgonagall is a more stable presence in everyone's life than the government. hogwarts teachers are basically A-list celebrities. everyone knows all the teacher gossip. so of course people know snape has greasy hair. it's no wonder teachers get away with doing so much wild shit in this series. who's gonna stop them?

it also puts dumbledore's political power in more context. it's not just that he's this super-impressive guy with this super-impressive history. he was also in loco parentis for nearly the entire damn country at some point. that's everybody's dad. you might be minister of magic, but albus dumbledore knows that you occasionally wet the bed until you were 13. and he remembers.

Well shit, when you say it like that... especially with Hogwarts being THE wizarding school of Great Britain, everyone knows everyone. We even see a smidge of this when the Ministry tries to arrest Dumbledore in book 5 and he quietly shuts down one of the officials, like he personally remembers him as a student.

Not only did Dumbledore defeat Grindelwald, he is also everyone's principal with a painfully accurate memory.

As someone who hated the harry potter movies because of the unachievable levels of inaccuracy as A kid, no we don't need this reboot. Reason? simply because JKR is problematic and she'll benefit from this reboot. You can't support a transphobe just for an uncanny attachment to A fictional series that has some of the worst represenation known to mankind.

Biological sexes are fixed but look how varied socially constructed gender can be!

Young human female: girl

Young human male: boy

Adult human female: woman

Adult human male: man

Male fox: fox

Female fox: vixen

Male cow: bull

Female cow: cow

Male chicken: rooster

Female chicken: hen

Male deer: stag

Female deer: doe

See you can never get out of the good old female versus male. As soon as there's a Y chromosome you're a male (even if abnormalities mean you've got something odd like YXXX, it doesn't mean you got three woman one for man hence you're a woman). Even if by some anomaly you got sexual apparatus for both sexes, or perhaps underdeveloped organs. A simple saliva test will be able to know which biological sex you have.

And there is nothing wrong with being one sex or another! That's fine! Of course you can socially identify into a gender that doesn't match your biological term.

But one thing that might help you is to remember: gender is socially constructed. So if you don't like it, you can rebuild it as you like!

For instance say you're a female adult but the idea of being a woman in the construction and definition offered by your culture and society is appalling to you. So you think... let's just identify as a man. That's great! But know that just changing what it means to be a woman is also totally valid.

Know that while you cannot change your DNA and genetic predisposition, so if you're born female you'll die a female, you can ALWAYS transform what it means to be a woman.

Social constructions don't have fixed definitions! They always transform and can be identified differently everywhere. So YOU choose what woman/man to be!

You don't feel like the kind of female who wear dresses? Great! You can socially identify as a male... but you can also just decide women don't need to wear dresses to be women.

You don't feel like the kind of male who loves sports? You prefer ballet? Great! You can socially identify as a woman... but you can also just decide men don't need to like sports and men can be ballet dancers and that doesn't make you less of a man.

There's only so much you can do about your body.

But you can do EVERYTHING about your social identity.

Don't get scammed with online IQ tests.

Your IQ (Intelligence Quotidien) is always supposed to be 100. There's nothing remarkable about that. Between 85-115 IQ is what the majority of the population that has no learning difficulties will have. Also nothing really remarkable about that.

But having a low IQ doesn't make you stupid and having an extremely high one doesn't make you more intelligent, not really. IQ tests measure intelligence, and scientists don't actually know what intelligence is. They can't agree on a definition or anything. So when they created these tests, they measure what those men thought meant being intelligent, mostly being good at maths and having good language skills. So in a nutshell, that's essentially all IQ tests measure.

i just realized there’s a rather large radfem presence on tumblr, which is a bit of a surprise. i am personally not part of that group, but something confuses me about their beliefs, so if anyone wants to answer, please do. radfems say they want to abolish the concept gender, and so do a lot of trans people, but radfems seem to be pretty non-supporting of us. i tried to keep the tone very neutral, as i believe maybe there is a way that we can see eye-to-eye. (ps. ive seen a lot of trans/trans accepting people sending death threats and such and i absolutely do not condone this)

Hello mate. Feminist here (though I wouldn't consider myself a radical anything). I'm always in for peaceful and polite conversation. So basically, a lot of the transgender movement is sustained on the idea of gender ideology. That's why even though T had always meant transsexual, it became transgender. Essential to that is a need to believe in gender. Feminism (and just people in general) are becoming more and more against gender ideology for several reasons. Mainly:

1. It's an ideology, a social construct and not science based.

2. You can't build a world around a permanently changing concept such as gender, because it's like trying to put pillars for your house and the ground keeps changing.

3. It promotes a view of what it means to be a woman or a man that is not healthy, as it's very much rooted in sexism and deep misogyny. Indeed, you'll often find people trying to convince someone that they're trans because they're not man enough or woman enough (and what they consider man or woman enough is actually based on Conservative, stereotypical ideas of manhood and womanhood).

4. It's deeply homophobic. I'm so sick and tired of seeing people accuse gay teenagers of being trans just because they're gay and they don't conform to the expectations of being a man or a woman (back to point 3).

5. It brainwashes children into believing that feeling a natural need to explore what it means, for them individually, to be a boy or a girl (a process that is particularly strong in the teenage years) means they forcefully have to be trans, and this isn't like when boys were called gays for liking ballet. If you get called homosexual, it doesn't come with life-changing surgeries and treatments. But if you get pressured into believing you're trans, your region has laws that say parents can lose the custody of their children if they don't give in to those beliefs, and school counsellors are insisting that yes you're trans and you should start treatment the sooner the better (and these things I'm taking from actual events that keep happening in real life), then these kids will undergo life changing procedures that rey cannot take back.

6. Gender ideology normalises gender dysphoria, which is nearly like normalising schizophrenia, and it pressures people to treat it with treatments that cause permanent damage as opposed to therapy.

Ok I am not a misandrist or anything, but I would never vote for a male running for president. Everyone knows their jobs are fixing cars and sinks, it just wouldn’t be plausible to think they could make the decisions for the country. And if they’re spending all their time trying to be politicians then who is gonna mow the lawns and move heavy things? I’m not belittling them, those jobs are important too but things work because everyone has their place!
