Summary:

Johnny Cooper is a roguish, impulsive, queer man and the youngest of the original L Detachment of the SAS. He's survived a hundred nights he shouldn't have. But in October of 1943 his number comes up. In saving his best friend, Reg Seekings from a shelled truck in Termoli, Italy, Johnny is hit in the back by a sniper. His injuries at Termoli are life changing. He finds himself near death, paralyzed from the chest down, and transported to Stoke Mandeville where he finds himself at the center of a medical revolution. Before now paralyzed men were left to die, but now under the care of Dr. Ludwig Guttmann he stands a fighting chance, not just of survival but recovery. Johnny's story follows the early days of the disability and queer rights movement, and the advent of the paralympic games. And yes, Johnny Cooper will be armed once more, just not quite in the way you might expect.

peter decorated remus’ first cane (a kinda crappy metal one) with stickers and doodles, which made remus smile every time he saw them. the boys commissioned a lovely handmade wooden one for remus for his birthday a few years after. sirius learnt woodworking solely to be able to repair/make canes for remus. james bought him some good quality finger splints because of his arthritis, and continues to replace them as needed, or buy him pretty ones for events. the boys have supported and always will support remus!!!

Remus still can’t believe that this is happening. It had been a fluke that he noticed the little banner on the packaging of his Vita-WOW chocolate flavored calcium supplement while doing the shopping—his preferred brand despite the fact that they’re considerably more expensive than the rest—and when he’d gotten home and found his reading glasses he’d squinted at the banner, feeling his eyebrows arch as he finally read the words: a contest to win a lifetime supply of the supplements. He’d mulled it over for a few days before he decided to enter on a whim, thinking that surely there was no way that he would win, and had forgotten about it completely until months later when he’d gotten an email congratulating him on winning, at which point he’d realized he should have read the terms and conditions much more thoroughly... Remus tries not to think too hard about the fact that Sirius has been staying in bed until noon lately. He's always been one to wake early, rising with the sun and tackling the day with unbridled enthusiasm while Remus slept on, but now he can’t remember the last time that happened. Remus knows that they’re both getting older—in their sixties, which had seemed impossible when they were young and dumb and in the middle of their first war, but here they are—and logically he knew that one day Sirius would lose his still boyish nature. Remus hasn’t felt young since the late seventies, when his joints started popping every time he moved and he enjoyed an early bedtime over partying with his friends, but he couldn’t ever imagine that happening to Sirius, who has always been so full of life and vigor. The thing is, if Remus is being honest with himself, he’s pretty sure that it can’t be chalked up to the fact that they’re aging. [Mature | 5,098]

A Gorey Spotlight

If the thin, elegant figures and exquisitely depicted furnishings on this dust jacket look familiar, it is because this is the artwork of Edward Gorey. Gorey worked in the art department of Doubleday from the mid-1950s to 1960 where he created cover art for dozens of books. Our copy of A Room in Chelsea Square was published in 1959 by Doubleday & Company, Inc. in New York. There is an ownership stamp of the Gay People’s Union Library in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a hand-written notation that states “Said to be written by Edward Gorey.” 

The speculation over the authorship of this novel is because it was initially published anonymously due to explicit gay content. Though there is no author mentioned in the book, the text on the jacket flap states “ You may wish you had never heard of A Room in Chelsea Square. But you will hear of it, and more than likely you will - as you read it - agree that it is the work of a highly skillful and sophisticated writer and that it is a very funny book indeed.” The author is British novelist Michael Nelson (1921-1990). Set in the early part of the 20th century and featuring characters who current critics may describe as camp, the novel continues to be relevant as a work of early gay literature. It was last republished by Valancourt Books in 2014.
