Lets Talk Depression
There are those of us who recognise we are depressed and simply wallow in it and accept our fate, we stay away from others in general and tend to be considered ‘loners’.
There are others who feel depressed but don’t necessarily recognise it as depression and when down simply turn to marijuana, drinking or some other substance to change their current state.
This group tends to stay stuck in this vicious cycle as their depression persists and substance abuse increases. Stuck in a cage where the only person who has the keys is yourself.
Then there are those of us who go through phases and this is the more common one that I find in my circle of friends. When things are going good and have food health, you’re getting promotions at work and getting along with your other half you feel on top of the world.
But when things start going south we quickly start doubting ourselves, become anxious and our self-perception changes which leads to more doubt and loss in confidence.
I am finding through personal experience that this is very common among a large portion of Millennials and we at the Rathbone gent think this is because of what society has told us.
Millennials were raised being told they are special and they can do anything they want and that they should follow a passion and with the right worth ethic and persistence they will find success.
With generation X having it hard during the 80 and 90s they tended to over compensate by ensuring their children had what would have been considered privileges back then.
Character, perseverance and personality are developed through hard ship, overcoming difficulty and having to figure out the best strategies through trial and error as our failures lead us to developing the best solutions.
I can attest to this first hand, my parents were immigrants that came to the United Kingdom in the 60’s in a time where literally there would be signs on Land Lord’s doors that said ‘no blacks, no Asians and no dogs’ I don’t know why dogs were racially profiled but that was England for you in the 60’s
It’s safe to say they had it tough and building resilience through hard work and character through overcoming failure made them humble and motivated them to ensure their kids didn’t go through the hard ships they went through.
The result – grown men and women still dependant on their parents as they don’t have the experience or tools to handle the responsibility that comes with being an adult.
This leads to alienation and feeling of ‘Why is this happening to me’ ‘Why am I not getting what I want’. We are a generation of ‘I’.
So how do we deal if you are depressed and recognise you are in one of the three categories described.
First let’s start with your dress sense where we have you covered. I remember when I was depressed I used to prefer wearing the same things over and over again because it was comfortable and constant.
I felt like I didn’t want to dress up but if I HAD to attend an event I would look in the mirror and see my outfit was on point and smile at the clean shaven, sharp looking Gent staring back at me. That spike in energy would feel good. As much as it can feel forced driving positive energy through your body reinforced through good habits is key.
That is what we recommend, when you wake up in the morning and your struggling to get out of bed and you want the lights to stay dimmed..when you slug out of bed and get ready ensure you style your hair, make sure you moisturize and pick out something different every day.
Get a routine in the morning as we are creatures of habit and sleeping at a certain time and waking up at a certain time to a particular routine helps regulate our circadian which leads to regulation of the hormones in your body resulting in a better mood and health.
Wear brighter colours as well such as an orange shirt with an orange jumper and cream corduroy parents. Make sure your accessories are on point wearing a black or brown belt.
Put on cufflinks for an extra touch of class and on your way out make sure you have a good look at yourself and let it sink in that you look good as that will set the tone for the day.
Speaking from personal experience we as a society regard look at failure and consider it an inability that is characterised in our personality when in reality failure is an opportunity for you to grow. Change your mind set when it comes to dealing with difficulty or hardship.
Reacting negatively isn’t going to change the hardship you’re going through it will only either cause it to be extended or lead to more hardship as you make it worse through actions that cause you to sink further into difficulty.
If you view it as an opportunity to learn and enhance your skills then difficulty is a mile stone to get through in the process of being successful!
I hope these tips are helpful in you overcoming your depression and reaching your goals.
We thank you for taking the time to read this and please share with your family and friends.

Look Designer in Generic
We have all been there, you save up for that lovely pair of Prada Jeans or Armani Shirt and when you first buy them you look at your bank account and immediately decide you will wear them on special occasions only.
Indeed you do wear them at special occasions only, that nice slim fit round the thighs and the length is just right so they rest on your shoes without looking crumpled at the base.
You get complements on them and you’re feeling good about yourself.
They suddenly become your most favourite pair, so off course you wear them more often. Your now in bars in them, you’re going to clubs in them and tearing up the dance floor getting tipsy.
Spilling some drinks on them perhaps dropping a few chips on them too by the end of the night.
You are having a good time and so you should you work too hard not to be doing the moonwalk in your brand new Prada Jeans.
Then you wash them a few times and they look like they should be in a charity box. The conundrum of purchasing expensive clothes is that the price tag doesn’t usually come with durability.
Especially when it comes to jeans or light coloured tops in Navy blue which blue harbour are so famous for.
Sometimes from the first wash they can start fading or lose shape if the temperature is a little higher than the fabric set point.
This is why we at the Rathbone Gent advise our readers that when it comes to designer it should be centre pieces like shoes, trainers, jackets, coats and show stoppers like a belt.
When people see key pieces in designer they will assume your dappered up in all designer. WINNINNNG!
Tops, Shirts and Jeans all need to be well fitted but should remain generic as these are the pieces to be worn day in day out and will have to take on the wear and tear of daily activity.
Going through the wash regularly will impact the look and colour of the fabric but if its cheap you won't be as bothered.
This is the Rathbone Gent and we thank you for taking the time to read this.
