Dinovember Day 7: Styracosaurus | Possum
This was really just an excuse to draw possums
It weights on your mind.
9 of Swords - Minor Arcana
Nine of Swords; depression, anxiety, fear, inner turmoil
A figure kneels on the ground, caught up in their own clothing and wrapped by layers of overlapping, dark, and unrelenting armor. It might appear to serve as protection but it merely restricts them. Patterns are embroidered into the textile, but they are faded. There is an empty space where a head should be; they are in a sense of stupor where all thoughts result into nothing. Nine spikes emerge from the metal that envelops their mind, a sign of spreading and growing worry. Two sculptured hands press against the space where their face should be, a sign of a failed attempt at comforting oneself. They grip a double edged sword for support. There is no hilt, nothing to hold onto, but they do not let go. Both a symbol of grasping at past hurt and an attempt to rise up again.
Help is difficult to ask for, blood flows from their palms, but it is necessary. It is the only sign of color in the design; it suggests that not all is bleak for the future. One hand presses against the ground. They can rise again.Â
Blowing
Some siphonophore inspired beasties called Deep Wraiths.
They’re a rare sight in the upper Depth Charges, 6 being the shallowest they’d drift. Whenever the Ladder would send scouts into Hellmouth, their subs could just make out the translucent shapes of these leviathans shimmering in the darkness, earning them their name.
very curious on how you draw eyes? they looks so neat!!
thank you!! uhhhh i dunno! shapes, i guess?

And this, my friends, is a fractal horse, which was inspired by a glitch in a 3D model of a friend’s horse OC XDD The portrait “sprouted” multiple snouts and I just had to take the idea and run off with it to “brew” more monsters.
Head Shapes
I'm not the best at this kind of stuff, but I know some shit I can share!
Hopefully this is good, and helpful to someone.
Decided to add a step by step process too, since I felt like my written explanations weren't good enough.
To draw front-facing heads, just exclude the ear-placement thing and make the cross more centered in the circle. You probably already know what to do after that.
Also, while I gave some ideas of which kind of characters you can give these heads to, you can use them whichever way you want!
You can also go insane and make different kinds of heads!! Since those are just some of the possibilities! Big chins, weird cheeks and giant foreheads! Forget about beauty standards and go have fun!!!
I'll be making a tutorial for the torso later. I can't let you guys draw fat/muscular characters with skinny necks eidjsjdjajsnskdnsndnms
Anyways, that's it. If there's any questions, just send an ask, or something.

Give me ALL THE SUPPORT, ALL!
I never reveal the reasons behind my designs but I’ll make an exception for this series. So here goes artist commentary:
Bhuta Vahana Yanta
“Iron Maiden” © Alexey Kruglov, accessed at his ArtStation here
[Indian literature has robots in it from the 12th century! Well, the robots are supposedly from the 2nd century BCE or so. But the book about them, the Lokapannati, dates between 1000 and 1200 CE in its oldest surviving form. The story involves reincarnation, intrigue between nations, and robot soldiers guarding the relics of the Buddha. As someone who’s very familiar with Western fiction glamorizing and exoticising countries like India and China, it amuses me that the secrets of robot manufacture in the Lokapannati are kept by the Romans.]
Bhuta Vahana Yanta CR 12 N Construct This appears as a metallic statue built in the shape of a warrior, its proportions subtly inhuman. It moves with surprising speed and grace.
The name bhuta vahana yanta means “spirit movement machine”. These constructs are so fluid in their movements and so skilled at combat that it is easy to believe they have a spirit trapped inside them. Each one is a work of art, made by a crafter who desires more flexibility and grace than a clockwork or golem can provide. Many of them are commissioned by spiritual or temporal authorities to act as a bodyguard, sentry and display of wealth all in one.
Each bhuta vahana yanta is keyed to an amulet, which grants its wielder the ability to command the creature. Bhuta vahana yentas follow orders to the letter, meaning that it sometimes requires some practice to create orders that are precise enough to get the desired results. In some kingdoms, the practice of creating bhuta vahana yantas is highly guarded, and those that figure out the secrets without authorization are hunted down and killed.
Constructing a Bhuta Vahana Yanta A bhuta vahana yanta is made using steel, iron, copper and bronze components costing a total of 5000 gp. The amulet that commands a bhuta vahana yanta is composed of a gemstone worth at least 1000 gp. The body is assembled and attuned to the gem at the same time.
Bhuta Vahana Yanta CL 12th; Price 136,000 gp Requirements Craft Construct, cat’s grace, fly, geas/quest, greater magic weapon, transformation, creator must be at least caster level 12th ; Skill Craft (armorsmithing) DC 23; Cost 71,000 gp.

Hello! I have been admiring your work for a long time now!
May I ask if there is a correct way of drawing feathers? I am currently drawing my Winged OC and I am stuck with the feathers.
(I have drawn wings before but I had forgotten how to draw them overtime I stopped drawing, and the feathers on my old art look so... meh)
But if you had posted something similar to this before, can I please have the link to it? Thanks!
Personally, I dont think there's a 'correct' way to draw anything, especially feathers because that is more about style and what suits you best. There's no shame in using pre-set brushes for these things if you're too worried about linearting feathers individually.
I would say that with style for feathers there's a range of how to do it: from Every feather linearted <--> the vague shapes and outlines minimalistic.
The only 2 things I would say to keep in mind are:
1 - How the feathers are layered/overlapping, and how many layers of feathers you've drawn (vary the shapes and sizes for more distinct layers especially across the coverts)
2 - Which direction they are overlapping, in as the first primary feather will be visible as the 'top' feather from the under/ventral side, but will be the bottom of the layering from the back/dorsal side
Let’s Draw Wings
I’ve gotten the question/request of how I draw wings lots and lots so I’ve decided to make a dedicated post!
Now…I’m no master, but I have found a way that I like to draw wings that’s efficient for me. There three main points:Â
References
Simplification
Texture Management
First of all - References
My favorite wing reference of all time is this post by Jenn on Twitter. I have both the images saved but I use the Wing Shapes one, below, alllllll the time. Like for real all the time!
I also keep pretty extensive collections of wing photo reference. When I’m having trouble, I’ll trace a few or do studies to get back into the swing of things. Here are links to my Pinterest boards:
Broadwing Reference (passive soaring and high-speed)
Longwing Reference (active soaring)
Shortwing Reference (elliptical and hovering)
Secondly - Simplification
When I sketch wings, I simplify Jenn’s diagram even further -
For me, the key to drawing wings is simplifying the wing down - from the structure to the feathers - the goal for me is to be able to draw them quickly and have the proper information conveyed. It needs to look like a wing in the base sketch. If it doesn’t, no amount of rendering and extra feathers will help. I like to break the wing into the three main moving parts. The orange is one part, then the purple contains two main chunks feathers that you can group together and move as their own parts.Â
On top of that, I like to think of wings like a sheet of paper. They can bend and fold in on themselves, with the orange meaty bits anchoring everything together.Â
Lastly - Texture
I like to call wings “texture monsters”. Feathers are hard to manage and can easily make wings look over-busy and muddy. Just like before, I break the wing into chunks so I can spend less time drawing the wing and it’s feathers:
Then you can put it all together and push things further -
So yeah this is how I throw wings together! The wings I draw aren’t super technical or detailed, but I what matters for me is that they look and feel like believable wings at a glance -

how do you get the wing markings so pretty? what sort of brush/texture(s) do you use? i absolutely love your stuff!
About 60+ Brushes that I made myself for the fun of it to put Photoshop through its paces and see how long it would take to break it:
Deviantart still has the download link for my old 2019 version of it.
(Press that bit)
I might put a new version up of a more cleaned up and polished set but eh, pick your favourites.
