About non-doctors performing abortions:

According to Article 25-A (The Reproductive Health Act) now enacted in NY, a “healthcare professional licensed, certified, or authorized by title eight of the education law”, and “working within their legal scope of practice”, may perform an abortion within 24 weeks of pregnancy.

A lot of my fellow pro-lifers (and pro-choice friends too) are likely as worried as I am about what kind of healthcare, non-doctor professionals, will be performing abortions. While non-doctor professionals of any kind can be very skilled, obviously we worry whether they are skilled enough to carry out a safe abortion on a patient.

To clear up the confusion, I decided to look into NY law concerning whom they considered to be licensed, certified, or authorized to be viewed as healthcare professionals, and who would be “within their legal scope of practice” to perform an abortion. These non-doctor professionals include:

Physicians assistants

Nurse Practitioners

Midwives (presumably Certified Nurse Midwives, or CNMs, not to be confused with Certified Professional Midwives, or CPMs)

So while joe shmoe off the street with an herbalist certificate isn’t going to perform an abortion, I still question the practice of non-doctors performing an invasive, delicate, and physically traumatic procedure such as an abortion on any woman, while trying to call it “safe” at the same time. PAs, NPs, and CNMs are great clinical and medical practitioners, but they are not surgeons. I urge my pro-life and pro-choice friends alike to question this change in law from NY and better inform women about their nonviolent choices and rights as a pregnant woman facing an unplanned pregnancy.

A modern au where Valka dies in childbirth and 20 y.o Hiccup is left with no parents and a baby brother to raise. He meets Astrid while entering a women’s bathroon. Arvid won’t stop wailing and Hiccup has no more room in his arms. Tears in his eyes, he asks,

“uh, excuse me? May I come in? There’s no changing table in the men’s bathroom and- I need to change him?”

all the other ladies are silently judging because “boy so young with a kid” but astrid’s like, “you need help with anything?”

they end up running some errands and becoming friends. they eventually meet the rest of the gang. Found Family ensues.

I love this idea! So much! Stoick gone, Valka dying in childbirth, Hiccup left alone to raise his little brother alone on top of grieving his parents? And then Astrid comes in, the only one not judging him, and helps him and they become friends and then the rest of the Gang comes into the picture aswell? And they become a family together? SUCH GOOD STUFF RIGHT HERE!

“It’s a couple block ahead. There’s a catch, tho.”

“what is it?”

“the owners are a little… Exuberant.”

I think it would be like a room in the front of their house they turned into a small general store. They happen to sell cheap but good quality baby stuff.

Oh my gods, I have a lot of ideas. Hiccup stopping at Gobber’s for tea. And Gobber of course asks,

“How are you holding up, kid?”

And Hiccup is just staring at Arvid who’s sleeping in his sling. He very quickly goes, “Fine. Yeah, yeah, I’m just fine”

It would literally be a “Hiccup realizes he can’t do this alone and that it really does take a village to raise a child”
