Starry Skies | Maysilee & Haymitch
"Every guy in our class is too handsome to be him, except the butcher’s son himself," he chuckled, brushing off the compliment easily. It didn’t do him any good to linger on things she said, because it was only setting himself up for heartbreak. If he let himself analyze it, and it meant nothing more than things would get uncomfortable and tense. It was better not to acknowledge it to much.
Friend. Nothing more.
It was hard though, especially when he felt her nose against his skin, her warm breath escaping her nose and then he imagined he could feel her draw in breath, or hear it at lease…Was she inhaling him? Not that he didn’t do the same every chance he got, mostly when he was hugging her or comforting her, then he’d take a quick whiff of her hair, thinking she wouldn’t notice anyway.
Tomorrow was the reaping and he figured they should probably be heading home soon, but he didn’t want to leave here yet and so he gently rubbed her back. “Did you ever learn the names? Of the stars?” He hadn’t. Not that he wasn’t smart, but he just didn’t have the patience for it. Maysilee was smarter though and he wouldn’t be surprised that she did.
Soon, her head fell back to his shoulder. She didn't want to seem odd, or weird him out. It was the last thing she wanted. Especially since... Well, tomorrow the chance for one of them to get reaped is doubled. What if she lost him? Either with him getting killed, or herself? She couldn't even comprehend the thought. No. No. There was so many other kids out there, and their chances were as minimal as one could think.
"Gemini." She started, pointing at a constellation. "Named after the twin brothers, Castor and Pollux. Together, they were known as Dioscouri. Their mother was Leda, but they had different fathers. Castor was a mortal, and son of Tyndareus, while Pollux was Zeus'. SUpposedly they had twin sisters too... Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra..." And, she got carried away. "Anyways, brightest start of this constellation is Pollux."
"Long story short, I learned some of it. Mostly the ones that are linked to greek myths." It was ancient and mostly forgotten, but Maysilee loved it. Concentrating on the side of his face, the girl fell silent for a few moments. Just looking over the side of his face and fine line of his jaw. She knew every freckle and curve like it was her own, since he was probably one person she saw every single day. Possibly even more than her sister. But it was just the way it was. Haymitch was her best friend, and pharmacist's daughter was her sisters. "I can't wait till we turn 18."
Train to Hell | Maysilee & Haymitch
"Yeah, I remembered," he answered, quirking his brows a little at the random mention of her name. He hadn’t even asked it. Not unless she was telepathic and was picking up someone else’s thoughts. Not that things like that were real. When it was obvious she was just discarding his earlier question and directed the conversation in a direction he really didn’t want to go, his mouth turned down at the corners as he inspected the cupcake in his hand. It looks good. Of course, it does. It’s food, and he’s been hungry for too long.
At the sudden blunt question, his gaze cut over to her and he frowned, one shoulder lifting in a semi-shrug, “The food,” he murmured, gesturing at the abundance of it. “—or the clothes.” At that he pointed in their escort’s direction, Maybelline still going on about the magnificent clothes. “Anything really as long as it’s not about the Games.”
Shaking his head at her regretful exclamation, he dismissed it with a wave of his hand, before bringing the cupcake to his mouth and taking a big bite out of it, chewing and trying to talk at the same time. “Don’t be. It’s true.”
"I remembered your name too, and you still said it." she said simply, trying to move the subject away from the blurt she just did. Taking the cup, she examined the dark brown, thick liquid inside. Hot chocolate. She had it once or twice before, but never in this amount or this strong. Taking a sip, she closed her eyes and inhaled, savoring the taste and aroma. The possibility of dying hit her hard, and perhaps the best thing was to enjoy little things, and die with some dignity.
Placing the mug after several more sips, she took a few orange slices that were on the table beside her. Aftertaste of chocolate remained, and mixed with orange. Humming, she leaned back into the chair, curling her legs underneath herself. "Wanna sit down, or do you want to eat more?" She felt just about ready to pop after all the food she ate. But supplies were important, and throwing few kilos onto her bones could only bring her well in the games. Being able to go more without food.
Starry Skies | Maysilee & Haymitch
For once, he wasn’t the only one lost in the moment, and he pulled her in just a tad closer. It would be so easy to kiss her now, but like always, he averted his gaze before he could give into temptation. Maysilee’s friendship was the most important thing in his life. If he were to lose it just because of teenage hormones, he would never forgive himself. Sure, he had some other friends at school, but no one with whom he was this close.
"Freckles? I don’t have any freckles," he chuckled, still gazing up at those stars for which he had looked away from her. Or he let her think that at least, because he couldn’t bring himself to admit the truth, that it was becoming unbearable at times to look at her and not kiss her.
Haymitch held his breath when she touched him, her fingers gently tracing the freckles she saw. He’d only seen them once or twice in his life, and he wondered how she could tell now, but then Maysilee had a keen eye for everything, and she saw things so differently at times, it was like being pulled into a dream world when she told him about them.
"If you drew 3 more, I’d look like that pimpled kid from the butcher’s."
Maysi couldn't help but laugh at his comment, shaking her head rapidly. "No, you're too handsome to look like that guy." And it was true. Haymitch was, in her opinion, one of most handsome guys she had ever met. Well... He was most handsome guy any girl in District 12 ever met, really. The funny fact was, that she quite hated all the girls that fawned and cooed over him, whenever he'd stroll the hallways. He was her best friend, and... She needed him in her life, and if he got a girlfriend... Then she wouldn't be the most important girl he had in his life. And that, wasn't an option.
Snuggling further into his side, her nose unexpectedly pressed into the crease of his neck, and she inhaled. He smelled clean and like grass and ash, the hint most people in District shared. It was familiar, and he felt like home. Eyes fluttering close, the blonde could feel her body relax against Haymitch's frame. Maybe it'll never happen. She didn't want to. Maybe it was a selfish thing to do or think, but... She wanted him, in a way a little different from the one you were supposed to want your best friend in. It involved a kiss and hand holding. Being together.
She had wanted to tell him for a while now, but it was a terrifying thought. He was her best friend, and what if she lost him? If he didn't feel this back, nothing would ever be the same again. They'd drift apart and that'd be the end of it. After the reaping. Yes. They always went home together after it, gossiping about Capitol and how they dodged a bullet once again. She'd admit it to him after that.

Mutts and collaborateurs of the president threaten his life on every turn, but with the help of friends and by forming some very smart alliances, Peeta will not be distracted from the mission at hand, even if the information locked safely within the pendant calls to him. Train to Hell | Maysilee & Haymitch
Outside of the escort, Maybelline, there is no one else to tell them how to behave, or to interact with each other. It’s annoying and uncomfotable, but Haymitch doesn’t care all that much, leaning back on the couch, listening to the oddly clothed woman talk and talk about the fashion in the Capitol and the splendor at the ceremonies they’d very soon be attending. All that’s on Haymitch mind is the food, of which there is really a lot, ridiculously so even, and the fact that three out of four at least are going to be dead before the games are over.
When the woman drones on about sponsors and woo’ing the public, he knows it’s time to get up and be done with the introduction. So he gets up from the couch and walks up to Maysilee, giving her a halfhearted grin as he grabs one of the cupcakes standing right in front of her. “Do you think we’ll be getting a mentor assigned to us in the Capitol, or will it just be Blabbermouth for the four of us?” Haymitch looks behind him at the other two, a girl younger than Maysilee by the name of Jay and a very thin, pale looking boy by the name of Kael. His own odds start to look better already.
"Maysilee." She said almost inaudibly, before given a chance to look up. They all knew each other names, from when the fluttering pink woman had called them up. The ones that hadn't had the odds in their favors. Haymitch Abernarthy, the boy she never actually spoke to. She knew of him, because their parents sometimes interacted and exchanged the goods, but they had never been friends. "I'm sorry this happened to you." And not just you, of course. You Kael, to Jay, to you and me. We simply were the unlucky ones.
Glancing over Haymitch shoulder, her eyes fell on the other two chosen ones, and she really hoped that none of them would kill each other. She knew she had no chance in these games, though. But she would damn well try. And hard. After a moment of silence, the girl lowered herself onto the edge of the sofa, shifting in a poor attempt to get comfortable. "So, what do you talk about to the person that'll try to kill you, and whom you're gonna try to kill back?"
Did I just say that out loud?
"Oh my God, I'm sorry. I have no clue what came over me!"
Starry Skies | Maysilee & Haymitch
Life in District 12 was never easy, but his best friend and the only girl he ever really noticed could make him forget about the hardships, the starvation and the coal mines, if only for a moment. No one else could do that for him and Haymitch couldn’t help but be reminded of the first time he saw her, her hair cut to her shoulders and framing her cute face perfectly. There had been something radiant about her that called to him right away, but considering he had only been eight, he’d never known what it meant, not until when puberty hit and he found that he wanted to kiss her all the time. He never did though, valuing their friendship more than anything else in the world.
"What are you thinking?" he asked the now sixteen year old girl, gazing down at her with open curiosity and a genuine affection he never really managed to conceal. His arm wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her lite frame in closer, waiting to hear more of her brilliant mind. Maysilee never really saw things the way he did, Haymitch being more realistic and sober in his views on life where hers made him ache to live in her world. "Do you see something in the stars I’m missing?"
Her shoulder fitted perfectly into the crease between his body and arm. She felt safe and sound like this: enveloped in her best friends arms. Friendships like this were rare in the District, the ones between a boy and a girl since they were little kids. Just 8 years old. It started by some notes being spilled and Haymitch rushing to help. Of course, she knew him from seeing him around, and the fact they both lived in the same street, but they never had spoken a word before. Maysilee and her sister were usually isolated with their best friend, the apothecar's daughter, while he was with his friends.
That day all of this started. By sharing a bagel she sneaked into school and sitting beside one another at lunch. She wanted to show gratitude and say something nice. It was supposed to be a one time thing, but he was so different than anyone she even knew. Witty and cute, with dimples on both cheeks.
Rubbing her cheek against his shoulder, Maysi slumped her free shoulder as if to say 'I've got no clue.'. "Nothing in particular." She said finally, diverting her eyes from the stars, so her gaze landed on his face. "I can see your freckles in this light." They weren't really existent, unless she was close enough and the light fell just right. Without thinking, she reached up and touched one, right under his eyes, before moving it down to his jaw and back to cheek. "If i drew 3 more, I'd have a constellation." Her tone was completely serious as she nodded her head.
Maysilee: Dead and Gone
If I die young, bury me in satin Lay me down on a bed of roses Sink me in the river at dawn Send me away with the words of a love song
The Capitol had sent her home with him on the same train, the difference being that he was the only one still breathing. Haymitch couldn’t get her out of his mind, having felt all these feelings stir for her in the last days they spent together, despite knowing they could never be. It only made it harder and whenever he would close his eyes, the faces of those he killed flashing behind his closed lids, she would always be the first and the last he saw, lingering as if a part of him hoped that by holding onto the image she might return to him.
Although he didn’t dare to strip her, he did open Maysilee’s coffin and placed the satin gown she had worn on the interview over her like a blanket, covering the plain white dress they’d put her in. She deserved to be buried in more than just the Capitol’s rags, and she had looked beautiful in the violet dress. More beautiful than any girl he’d ever met.
As soon as the train arrived, District 12 not having changed at all where everything in Haymitch’s life had been turned upside down, he let the Peacekeepers handle her body while he forced a smile onto his face, waving at the people cheering for him while they should have been mourning Maysilee instead.
Darkness had fallen already by the time he was escorted back to the Victor’s village to take residence in his newly earned house, where his parents and little brother were already waiting for him. It wasn’t where he wanted to be and as soon as they stopped fussing, he found his way to the small graveyard near the fence. They hadn’t even given him the chance to attend the funeral, which worsened his mood. Luckily, he had found several bottles of whiskey from his father in the house and he drank from it eagerly, to bury the rage, the grief —the helplessness.
Pressing his back against the stone her name was graved into, along with the dates of her birth and demise, he heaved an audible sigh. “I shouldn’t have let you go.” Haymitch didn’t say anything else as he pulled a little bag from his jacket pocket, one of those his mother used for her garden and athough he couldn’t tell what flower seeds they were, he still planted them all around her grave. It was only weeks later that he would recognize them as white pianeses.
Only when there was nothing left for him to plant, did he look up and put his hand on top of the stone. “I should never have left you there for the careers to find.” It was all his fault. Taking another deep swig from the bottle, he managed a smile that was completely heartbroken rather than an expression of glee. “I’d been trying to survive, but for you, I could have died.” And then Haymitch finished the bottle, the first one he drank for a purpose, with a reason. Maysilee.
