The thing about taking Haymitch’s “You could live a hundred lifetimes and not deserve him” as a fact is it dilutes every character by ignoring Haymitch’s self-loathing, Katniss’s selfless devotion, and Peeta’s various flaws.

This is such a little thing. They're not fighting, Gale's not being a huge jerk and in fact just took a punch in the face for her. But relationships are built on giving and accepting help. Especially for Katniss, who loves to care for those she loves. And when Gale pushes her away twice? She just gives up.
