Women aren’t stupid. We know that beauty is inherently political, that it exists to broker power and define who does and doesn’t have access to it. We know that how well we’re treated on an everyday level is entirely incumbent upon how our looks are perceived by others. More importantly, we know that the same corporations who spent millions on marketing to make us feel shit about ourselves are now turning around and altering their advertising in order to try and appropriate the body positivity movement. We know their messaging isn’t genuine or rooted in concern for our self image or anything else beyond their own bottom line.
We don’t need “all women are beautiful” messaging. We need “all women have inherent worth, regardless of what their bodies might look like” messaging. And we’re never going to get it from the people trying to sell us stuff we don’t need just to impress people we don’t like.
